Friday Loves A Rainy Day

25 May 2012

Who loves a rainy day?  Well, it can become very bothersome for most of us when our hair frizzes up and our clothes and feet are wet from downpour after downpour for a whole week straight.

But every single one of us would take those weekly downpours for a three-day weekend filled with sunshine!

So in honor of those rainy days…here are my top 5 loves on a rainy day.

1. RAIN SHOES.  Rain shoes were probably the toughest thing to find for those of us with large calves.  It was like getting penalized by the fashion world for having such huge calves.  We couldn’t wear those tall rain boots like everyone else was wearing.  Instead, we sloshed through the rain in shoes that ended up getting tossed the second we went indoors because who wants stinky wet shoes?

Well, someone out there finally realized there was no need to just go with tall rain boots.  There was a whole market out there for rain shoes of a different sort.  For those with big calves…there is an answer!

Sperry Top-Sider, $55.99 (ON SALE) at Zappos.com.

These boots are perfect during the colder rainy days.  The only downside to these boots, you’ll need very thick and tall socks to avoid blisters on your lower calf.  For me, I just wear fuzzy chenille socks and there’s no blistering problem.  Keeps my feet super dry and warm!

Sperry Top-Sider Kendall, $90 at Zappos.com.

Rain ballet flats!  Not only are they super adorable, but they are also perfect to wear during those warmer rainy days.

Hunter-Aston Wedge Ankle Boot, $125 at SaksFifthAvenue.com.

Not to be outdone by Sperry Top-Sider, for those fashionistas that prefer the name brand…Hunter sells ankle boots and ballet flats for the rainy days, too!

2.  You Can Stand Under My Umbrella.  Finding a good, qualitative umbrella can be a feat in itself.  I bought a $70 umbrella and it was destroyed in the first gust of wind that hit it.  There was no amount of trying to bend it back into position…it was done for.  My $5 black umbrella I picked up from a street vendor has had more life in it than that $70 umbrella…and it’s still going.

Here are some of the best umbrellas on the market that can withstand those high winds.

Galleria Van Gogh Irises Auto Openclose Super-mini Umbrella – Irises, $25.00 at Amazon.com

Galleria Paris Folding Umbrella, $25.00 at Amazon.com.

London Fog Umbrellas Auto Stick Umbrella (Black), $25.30.

These umbrellas are ranked as being some of the best umbrellas in the biz.  Galleria and London Fog can both stand up against those blustery days.

3. The Trench.   Nothing is worse than walking out in your work clothes only to find that your clothes are so drenched, no amount of umbrella or rain boots will keep you dry.  Well, honey, that’s what a trench coat is for!

Burberry and London Fog have been well known for their classic trenches.

Burberry London Colorblock Trench, On Sale NOW at SaksFifthAvenue.com for $837.00 (was $1395).

As for me, I have the classic Burberry trench…but I also have the FUN trenches to wear.  Take a look at this one…

Desigual Trench, $89.99 at Macys.com.

This trench is perfect for the spring/summer months.  Can’t wait to get my hands on one!

For those that are budget conscious, JCPenney has the classic trench for $20.  If you take a look around JCPenney.com, you’ll find trenches for as low as $7!  Now, that’s a deal!

4.  A good book.  Nothing says a perfect rainy day like curling up with a book and a cup of coffee (tea or hot cocoa, whatever your preference).

Lately, I’ve been curling up with some scary tales just because the lightning and thunder outside gives the book an extra eerieness to the story.  Try picking up The Woman in Black: A Ghost STory (Vintage) or one of The Last Apprentice Series.

But if scary tales isn’t your thing…there are plenty of amazing books out there like The Oracle of Stamboul or One Hundred Years of Solitude.  Whatever your flavor, there’s a whole world of stories awaiting to be read.

5.  A good movie.  My tastes vary on rainy days, but nothing says loving like a chick flick day.  Jane Austen is probably the way to go on rainy days.

OR you could watch a great ghost story like The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe.  I read both the book and watched the movie.  They were two very different (but similar) tales, and both were equally as good.  Both stories scared the bejesus out of me.  It’s the way ghost stories should be told…in the old fashioned kind of way.

I was so scared at the end of the movie that the cat crawled up onto the sofa and sat there staring at me with this confused look on her face.  I realized that the end…that really scared the crap out of me.  I think I was as scared as she gets when there’s a thunderstorm brewing outside.

Friday Loves

18 May 2012

1. Fresh Day, 38 W 48th St (between 5th Ave & Rockefeller Plz), New York City. I am a tad bit addicted to this Manhattan deli that I came across the other week.  It’s your typical run of the mill kind of deli…unless you’ve discovered its secret.

To the back of the deli, on the right, there’s a Korean food station.  Who will you find there?  REGULAR customers that seem to come by almost every single day.  They order something different off of the menu every single day, and they are all addicts…just like me.

My office has dubbed their udon soup with fresh vegetables with your choice of meat as the ‘Barrel of Soup.’  For $7, you’re getting a huge barrel of soup filled with fresh ingredients.  What makes the soup so addictive?  The broth.  The broth is what has every single one of us coming back again and again and again.

Even if you don’t get the soup, everything else on the menu is superb.  If you get an entree, they give you a small container of the broth with fresh green onions floating at the top.  It’s that broth…that’s the addiction.

Everything on the menu that I’ve tried so far is AMAZING!  It’s not so often you make a discovery this incredible.  To walk in at the spur of the moment, walk all the way to the back and discover something this good?  That rarely happens.

The Korean counter has the same group of luncheoners every single day.  We’re all addicts, sharing with each other what we had the day before and what we thought of it…really, it is a cult following.  No place else in Manhattan have I ever seen a group huddled around a food station talking about this dish or that dish or the “What are you having?” to complete strangers.

The two Hispanic guys that cook up the meals for us…they just laugh every single time they see another regular.  The food is really the best Korean food I’ve ever had in my life…and I’ve been to Korea!

If you’ve never had Korean food before, and you’re going to try it out for the first time…see Fresh Day and the Mexican guy in the back.  He’ll whip something amazing up for you!

2. KOMBUCHA! You can first blame Winter Adams and then Georges Laraque for my new obsession.  Winter texted me and told me to try Kombucha because it made her feel better.  Of course, I asked, “What in the hell is Kombucha?”  She replied back that it was a tea…to just try it, I’ll understand.

Well, while I was at Fresh Day, I wandered over to their drink case and noticed that they had Kombucha.  I thought…well, Winter has never done me wrong before, so I bought a bottle.  It was $5!

I made the mistake of picking up the ginger one.  I should have gone with a flavorful one, because that was the nastiest tea I had ever tasted in my life!

Georges Laraque followed up by telling me that one of his companies distributes Kombucha.  He told me to give it another try…there were better flavors.

Take Two.  I got the cranberry one…and then because the deli keeps changing the flavors on me when the other flavor runs out, I tried the citrus and then the three-flavored trinity or something flavor from Synergy over the course of the next couple of weeks.

Guess what? Ends up that was the wiser choice.  It actually tastes better.

What is the importance of Kombucha?

From Wiki:  “Proponents claim it aids cancer recovery, increases energy, sharpens eyesight, aids joint recovery, improves skin elasticity, aids digestion, and improves experience with foods that ‘stick’ going down, such as rice or pasta.”

So for those of us that are sick…have a history of cancer, etc. this detox fermented tea actually assists the body, especially the liver and digestion.

For me, it just gives me hot flashes a lot like HCG drops do.  {HCG drops are a homeopathic detox cleanser that helps eliminate fat from the body.}  I think there is a possibility that Kombucha does attack fat cells (at least that’s how it feels to me).  The most important thing is that it does give those with ailments an added vitality that makes them feel a whole heck of a lot better.

For those a little scared of Kombucha, it’s been around for 2,000 years, made more popular by the Russians in the 1900s.  It’s a lot like vinegar in a way…and my grandpa was a believer that apple-cider vinegar was a cure-all for what ails you.  So going along the same lines of ‘vinegar’, Kombucha would have similar benefits.

If you see it, try it out.  It can be rather expensive, but the health benefits are fantastic!  But like all crazes to cure-alls…read the fine print and drink in moderation.  Here’s MSNBC’s take on the Kombucha craze.

3. Glass Jars.  Pretty soon it will be that time of year again to start canning the summer bounty.  It’s a great economical way to keep the summer bounty going well into the winter months when fruit/veggie prices skyrocket.

Canning is actually easier than it looks.  One of my favorite recipes is a corn relish from Food & Wine.  I usually buy corn for two weeks straight just to make this recipe and can it.  I eat the corn relish with almost everything because this recipe is so divine.

But let’s talk about JARS.  The jars pictured here are from The Container Store.  I saw them in Martha Stewart Living recently with a really cool recipe attached.  I thought…what a brilliant idea for bringing lunch to work.  I love the flip top and that it seals in liquids tightly.

I don’t use plastic containers to bring my lunch or to store food in the fridge.  I use only glass containers.  I’ve made huge batches of my favorite tortilla soup and put them in jars I saved from Archer Farms (Target’s generic brand), various salsa and spaghetti jars, etc. and have taken the soup into the office, just because there’s enough for two lunches in each jar.

The thing I like most about giving jars a second life is that it makes it easier to store big batches of soup.  It’s easy to just grab and go.

I like these French hermetic jars because I’ve used the glass bowls with plastic lids and guess what?  Forget about carrying around anything liquid.  But truthfully…I’m just a huge fan of these jars with flip tops.  Not only are they perfect for canning the summer bounty, but spillage is less likely.

There are tons of creative uses to jars beyond canning.  You could pack your salad in a jar (make sure dressing/liquidy parts are at the bottom then add other veggies, etc. put the lettuce at the top so it won’t get soggy), oatmeal, cake, you name it…it can be put in a jar which makes it much easier to grab and go.

Salad in a jar.

Cake in a Jar.

Oatmeal in a Jar can be prepared the night before.

A lot of people use plastic containers to store food and take it to go.  To me, glass is the more eco-friendly alternative.  It can be reused again and again.  Not all plastics are recyclable.  Glass is always recyclable.  Besides, I think it just looks cooler to have glass around rather than plastic.

4. PEONIES!  I have a new favorite flower.

I actually can’t wait to have a house of my own so I can plant peonies all over.  In Martha Stewart Living, she described the methods to having a successful crop of peonies…they live on neglect.  The more you neglect them, the more abundant the flowers will be.  It’s like a no-nonsense plant that you don’t have to worry about at all and it thrives!

When you put peonies in vases around the house, they are so fragrant and just burst right open, lasting for several days.

I think Blaire from Gossip Girl is making peonies even more popular, because that’s her favorite flower.  Can you blame her?  Look how HUGE the blooms are!

Tis the peony season!   . . . that’s right now!

5.  The Glamourai.  Look who’s in Marrakech, Morocco!  The Glamourai is currently visiting and you should see her fashion shoot and photos!

Like always, I like to share what blogs and sites I’m currently stalking, and The Glamourai is the latest.  Her photos are so glamourous!  I wish I had thought of doing a fashion shoot while I was in Morocco.

It’s kind of fun looking at her photos, because she’s visited all of the spots I visited.  But what makes her site even more fun…it’s like seeing a glamourous fashion take of the same spots I visited.  It’s soo cool.

Check out the site.  You’ll love the colors and photos.  Just beautiful. As the Moroccan men would say…”LALA!”

My New Motto

17 May 2012

Have Fewer Things, But Better Things.

— Suzanne Rheinstein —

I’m not sure what magazine I clipped this quote from, but this motto just really leaped out at me.  “Have Fewer Things, But Better Things.”  Why didn’t I ever think about that before?

Because we live in an age of NOW.  We want it now…not tomorrow…not six months from now.  We want the latest gadget, latest fashion trend, latest phone, latest car, latest social media platform NOW…not later.

We would rather not eat in order to buy a pair of $800 shoes now, instead of saving our money up to buy the shoes when they go on sale.  We want everything now, now, now, now….NOW!

Guess what?  We’re collapsing on ourselves by doing this to ourselves.  Accumulation…clutter…yep, most of us (including myself) are hoarders of something.  We are not minimalists at all.

Well, frankly, I’m kind of sick of my clutter, so I’m making myself change by changing my belief system.  I’m forcing myself to live by the motto: “Have Fewer Things, But Better Things.”

So instead of furnishing my home with cheap stuff just because I need to furnish it somehow and give it character…I’m going to invest in more qualitative things now that most of the apartment actually is furnished.  Sure, I could add some character here and there with little cheap finds, but I can also upgrade my life by saving up for those better things.

Think about it…say you need a new sofa (like I do).  Instead of getting another cheapo Ikea one because I need something NOW (and different)…I could just stick with the one that I have now, put a new slipcover on it to give it a new look, and start squirreling away for something that will be an upgrade to my current look.

Take for instance this “Cowling” Velvet Sofa from Horchow.  This classic beauty is $6,059.  It’s not something you would toss after 20 years…it’s something you would invest in for the long haul.

The point is learning to save for the bigger purchases instead of trying to buy everything NOW, NOW, NOW!  Sometimes we sacrifice on quality because we want to consume a lot of things NOW.  We then end up not happy with what we have and then end up buying more because we weren’t 100% happy with what we just brought home.

Then that item ends up in some corner, or on the floor…basically in a place that is forgotten until we’re rummaging through and finding 50 of the same items, but none of them was the one item that made us happy.  We start to hoard collections of things until we get it right.  A lot of times, what we spent on the ‘didn’t make it’ pile ends up costing us more than the more expensive item cost to begin with that was the item we coveted the most.

Am I losing you?  Let’s talk fashion…

I am a purse hoarder.  My purses have their own closet…and now I’m shopping for a new armoire to put them all in.  Lately, I’ve been forcing myself to go through my collection to declutter it.  I have so many bags, I carry a new one every week.  I’m so backlogged on new bags versus old bags, that I’ve not been able to get back to carrying an old bag, because I still have another 20 new bags I still haven’t carried yet.

I had to force myself to stop accumulating more bags.  That’s where that quote came in.  “Have Fewer Things, But Better Things.”

So I changed my belief system about my purse collection.  I am now only adding couture designers.  Most are vintage right now, but for the new bags…I’m forcing myself to save up to buy the “Better” ones that will last for the next 50+ years that I can pass along to my daughters and granddaughters.  These are the Fendi, Prada, Valentino, Chanel, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent bags of the world.

If you know your purses, you know that all of these have a starting price of well over $1,000 for the bags that last a lifetime.

Right now, I am coveting an Yves Saint Laurent bag to add to my collection.  My savings goal (I included the taxes) is $1,695.  Here is how I’m forcing myself to make it happen:

  1. Buy NO MORE BRAND NEW bags. {Exception on purse collection is if I find a vintage couture bag at a great price.}
  2. For every book I read (this is in conjunction with my 2012 New Year’s Resolution), I am putting the cost of the book into the jar.  So basically, if I got the book from the library (for free), I put the same amount into the jar that the book would have cost me if I had bought it, because basically I saved that amount by not buying the book.  If I actually bought the book I completed reading (and this could be any of the books in my library at home), I have to put 3x the amount into the jar, or take the money out of the jar that I paid for the book (to force myself to not spend money on books…so if I paid $13 for a book at the bookstore, I penalize myself and end up spending $52 for the book because 3x that goes into the jar and the $13 I used to pay for the book, or I lose $13 from the jar).  What happens to that $13 taken out?  Well, looks like I spent it on a book already.
  3. For every gift card I receive to Saks, that is a BONUS and is deducted from the amount I’m trying to save up.
  4. To curb my spending and to add to the jar faster, for each breakfast/lunch I do not buy during the week, that money goes into the jar.  That’s a savings of about $20 per day that could go into the jar.  That’s almost $400 saved every month.  That’s a great incentive to get me to take my meals to work!
  5. For every classic book I read, I put $25 into the jar (because it’s difficult to get through classic books or get myself to read them).  For every 10 classics I read, I add in an extra $250.  That gives me more incentive to read more classics!
  6. For each week that I successfully complete five days of exercise…I put $50 into the jar.  It’s not $10 per exercise day…five days per week have to be completed in order for the money to hit the jar.  This will force me to work harder on accomplishing my dream of having a yogalicious body when I hit 40.

The point in creating these rules for myself was to help me accomplish other goals that are also important to me like my 2012 New Year’s Resolution to read 1 book every week (52 books a year).  Of those 52 books, 26 of them have to be classics.  So far I’ve read 22 books, only 2 of them were classics.

Other belief systems I’m changing is how much I spend on what David Bach calls the “latte factor.”  Saving $400 per month to go towards my new motto…actually forces me to curb my spending on a daily basis.  If I’m willingly spending $20 per day, that’s $20 I’m not putting towards my new covet item.  What do I want more…the NOW factor or that INVESTMENT factor?

I’ve found that when I write down what I eat/drink every day for the doctor’s office, I also keep tabs on what I spend.  I found a link between eating and spending in my life.  I find that when I’m healthier and making wiser decisions with what I put into my body (like cooking my own meals), what I spend is actually lower.  When I get careless with my food diary and my diet, my spending is also OUT OF CONTROL.

I mentioned this to my doctor once and he thought it was the craziest thing…but I saw a correlation between the two.  It has a lot to do with the NOW factor and wanting everything NOW instead of saving and investing in what I really want out of my future.

So now that my main focus on my GOAL BOARD is going to be “Have Fewer Things, But Better Things,” I’m going to incorporate it in all walks of my life.

When you think of your diet, think of having fewer, but better things.  When you think of buying that new handbag, don’t think of how many bags you can accumulate, think of buying a better handbag…one you’ve been really coveting that seems out of reach.  You’ll appreciate it more…just like I do my first Burberry and my first Fendi.

This is just one of the first steps I’m taking in changing my life for the better.  Sure, I’ll meet the girls once a month for dinner or some other activity, because happiness is important…and sharing time with your friends is important.  It just doesn’t have to be every single week.

I am on spending lockdown right now.  I am making sure that I maximize my savings so that I can start investing in the future that I want.  Everyone wants a nice future filled with nice things.  We have to be the change NOW in order to have those things in the future.  Instead of instant gratification, learn the lessons from our Great Depression grandparents…save for the future.

It takes a change in mindset to focus on what you want for your future.  We’re so busy living in the NOW, that we oftentimes forget that our future eventually becomes the NOW.  It’s best that we have that future covered too.

For me, when I think about the future, I’m thinking about my future family, my future home, my future health, and my future retirement.  Those are the things that are important to me, but one lesson I learned from the head of one of the top law firms in the country a long time ago…don’t get so wrapped up in the future that you forget to live in the now.  Focus on the things that are important today, but don’t forget about tomorrow, because it will eventually become the now.

When You Believe

17 May 2012

So I got myself a little pre-retirement gift from hockey writing.  When I saw it up on Little Black Bag, I knew I had to get it!  Considering how far both the Devils and the Rangers have gone this year in the post-season, it seemed fitting.

This “Believe” necklace from Disney Couture ($50 retail) was the perfect little gift to commemorate my final season.  I like that Tink Tink (Tinkerbell) is right above the ‘e’.

But being the masterful trader that I am, that wasn’t the only Disney Couture necklace I got.  I got one more just for the extra luck…

And yes, that is Tink Tink with her magic wand at the ready to grant that Wish (retail $45).

So from now until the Stanley Cup is lifted…guess what I’m wearing?

If you know how Little Black Bag works, you’ll know that I got both of these items for only $49.95.

If you don’t know how LBB works, let me explain…

1. You have a choice of joining the monthly service (which you can skip a month if it’s not in your budget) for $49.95+tax or just the one time buy for a little bit more.

2. You can pick whatever item you like.  After you select your item, add it to your bag and then they’ll reveal two to three mystery items (just the name of the brand, what type of item it is and the retail price).  They won’t tell you what the two items are until after you checkout.

3.  After you checkout, they will show you your bag, including what the two mystery items are.  You then have the choice of having them send your bag to you, or trading what’s in your bag to other members of LBB over the next 7 days (ship at any time you’re satisfied).  After 7 days, your bag automatically ships with what is in your LBB after the trading period expires.

4.  They don’t charge you until your bag ships.

You are never stuck with anything that you don’t want (unless you’re just a really bad trader).

The thing about LBB…what I love about it is the trading.  It is the fun part in the whole process.  For those new to LBB, I recommend giving the site a two bag trial (I’d say 2 months, but I seem to be a weekly shopper), because the first time, you’re just getting into the swing of things.  The second time around, you’ll be more masterful at it and learn how to get exactly what you want and appreciate the whole idea of LBB.

I’m a bit of an addict when it comes to LBB.  I have a new bag every week.  I trade like a mad woman.  I usually end up with 4-5 items after my bag ships.  The first week I ended up with two purses and a bracelet.  Another week, I traded up a storm for an Urban Expression iPad case in blue sequins, a BCBG watch, and R&Em/Sakroots pouches (which are my latest obsession).

They have new merchandise on the site every single day, so you’re bound to find a whole lot of somethings that you will love and trade like a mad woman to get.

What I love is that when you have something that someone desperately wants, your $50 retail item could get a trade for $90 worth of merchandise…which means a bigger bargaining chip for you to go after other items you’re lusting after.  Trust me, I’ve done those $90 deals only to turn around with 5-6 items in my bag that I trade like crazy for what I really want.

In the trading frenzy for these two necklaces…even I’m amazed at what I did to make it happen.  I traded that Believe necklace for a Wish necklace and then turned around and got that Believe necklace back in a different trade.  Like I said…Mad Woman Trader here.

But the point in all of this is…I was happy at the end of the day because I scored two necklaces from Disney Couture for $49.95+tax to commemorate my final season…savings of $45 (i.e. it’s like I got the Wish necklace for free).

I’ve priced both necklaces around and have seen that they were cheaper elsewhere, but that was for one necklace.  It was still cheaper to trade like crazy at LBB to get two of them for $49.95.  LBB was the better deal.

As far as a lot of the bags, etc. on there, sometimes you’ll find a bag at a cheaper price on another site or store, but keep in mind that you’re getting 2-6 items for $49.95.  Even on super blowout clearance, you’re not getting that good of a deal elsewhere.  That’s why I’ve stuck with LBB and not purchased the same items elsewhere.

So give them a try…for those trying to curb their spending, this is a great way to shop for your Achilles’ heel items (hello…purses for me).  I think the added adrenaline rush of trading makes this site more fun than just your regular everyday shopping.

Happy Trading!  That site again is LITTLE BLACK BAG!

On Love and Other Things

16 May 2012

A few years ago, I was reading “The Answer” by John Assaraf and Murray Smith.  It was a fresh look at how to incorporate “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne into real-life business techniques.

I didn’t get too far into the book, but there was one part that I’ll never forget.  Assaraf wrote about his own Motivation/Dream/Inspiration/Goal Board.  In it, he put a picture of a house that he liked, just because he wanted to own a house just like it one day.  Years later, the board got packed away.  He didn’t even think about the board again.

Ends up a decade or so later, he moved into a new home.  As he was unpacking his boxes, he came across his old Dream Board.  He then took a look at the house that was on his board and was shocked to discover that it was the exact same house he had just bought.

When he put the picture of the house up on the board, he didn’t know where it was located.  He just liked the way it looked.  Never did he imagine that he would one day end up owning the exact same house in that picture.

He called into his universe exactly what he dreamed of having.

Inspired by his board, I decided to do a “Book of Dreams” quite similar to the one that Queen Latifah kept in the movie “Last Holiday.”

Everything that I ever dreamed of wanting in life that I couldn’t even tell my best girlfriend…I put in that book.  It was a book I put together where I could be 100% honest with myself about what I wanted in life.  Sure, I want a house in Ireland overlooking the sea…and another one in Cote d’Azure, France.

Sure, I want to have a major yogalicious body when I turn 40 years old.

I want to cook and cook and cook up new recipes, because apparently I’m a pretty damn good cook and I love doing it.

When it came to what I was looking for in a man…I put down all of the qualities I was looking for in a guy, along with the type of relationship I would want to have with that person.  All of the qualities reminded me of one person…someone I knew already.  So I put a picture of that guy in my dream book and wrote “A guy just like HIM!”  I made sure the ARROW pointed right to that guy.

He embodied all of the qualities I was looking for in a guy.  Little did I know that I wasn’t calling a guy into my universe just LIKE him…I was calling that exact same person in the picture into my universe.

When I realized what I had done, I went home, tore up the part in my Book of Dreams about the kind of guy I was looking for and threw it in the trash.  I was horrified that I had called that exact person into my universe like that…and he was married!

So now I live by the mantra…”Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get exactly what you asked for.”

Really…I should have known better, but at the time, I was just discovering the secrets of the universe around us.  I had no idea just how powerful it was.

These days though…I actually ponder what happened in that instance.  Why had I called that exact person from the picture into my universe?

Perhaps the reason why I called that person into my universe was really because he was exactly what I was looking for…and there’s no one else just like him.  There’s no carbon copy of the soul, it’s just him.

To this day, I have dreams that are so vivid and clear, like he’s really there.  Even in meditations, he’s in those meditations and I always ask why in the world God would show me some married guy.  It just seemed wrong.

It took a lot of meditation and a lot of questions before I could sort through what was going on.  It took some deciphering but then I realized that God was showing me my past lives in my meditations and dreams.  That’s why that soul is so relevant in this lifetime…he was in all of my past lifetimes.  We follow each other from one lifetime to the next.  The way God has described it to me in my meditations is that he is the first love and the last love in what is called the “infinity” love story.  We find each other in every lifetime.  We are drawn to each other no matter where the other one is…we are pulled to each other over time and space.

Last night, I actually dreamed that I had fallen asleep curled up in his arms on the couch.  I woke up, feeling him watching me sleep…and could hear him thinking, “Could this love be that real?  Could she really love me that deeply?”

I think that’s what we’re all looking for is to love and be loved that deeply and truly.  That’s what the infinity love story has been about each lifetime.

When you feel that pull between two strangers, what does it mean?  When you feel something magical in the air…what is really happening?  Why is it happening?

I’ve been asking those questions for the last six years.

I’ve had people intervene that knew his side of the story and told me to stay away from him.  They told me everything he had said and how he had poured his heart out about how he felt about me.  They told me, “Stay away, because he’ll only end up hurting you.  You don’t deserve to be hurt like that.”

Others told me, “Stop encouraging him.”

So I took their advice.  Now, when I see him, I pretend he doesn’t exist…like he’s not even in the same room as me.  It’s what rockstars in my past have called, “Turning the love off.”

It’s what I call…making the decision to move on in life.

Many of my friends have asked me if I was sure about leaving hockey writing.  I always reply that I’m very sure.  I want to focus on having a family, so I need to not work as much.  I’m 36 years old.  I have to make an effort to move my life in that direction.

I was reading this article by Polly Campbell called “Detoxify Your Thoughts.”  In her column, she talks about how we sabotage our goals and dreams.

Perhaps you think you’re ready for a loving relationship, yet you work so much that you leave no time to date. Your current circumstance is a physical representation of the beliefs you hold. If you aren’t moving toward what you want, chances are an unconscious belief is catching you up. Often, Hendricks says, we don’t recognize our core beliefs until they create some negative results. Look closely at the results you’re getting — if they aren’t what you want go deeper and explore the beliefs behind them.

One of my co-workers recently made the decision to leave our office because of this reason.  She thought she worked too much and that was the reason why she could never keep a good relationship.  She made the decision to go someplace where she didn’t have to work weekends or the holidays…but she could enjoy life again, even if it meant taking a drastic paycut.

Living life meant more than working through life and never enjoying it.  So she made the change to make her dreams come true.

When I was in Europe and Africa this past September/October, I started to notice something strange going on in the universe around me.  Men were flocking up to me, asking me if I was married, doing these kind, gentlemanly things…things I would want out of a mate…I had to ask…why?  What’s going on?  Why is this happening now?

Am I calling this into my universe?

Next thing you know, I’m surrounded by wedding shops in Paris for an entire mile as I headed to the Sacre Coeur.  Trust me, it was the weirdest thing in the world!

Then the most unusual thing happened while I was in the Sahara Desert…I actually fell in love!  It was the oddest thing ever.  There is something magical about the Sahara.  You could be standing there one minute before God and all his wonders and then feel your heart and soul completely heal from that asshole that broke your heart…then you turn to your right and fall in love with the guy sitting right next to you!

Like I said, it was the oddest thing ever because HE was a desert nomad.

Over these months, I really had to think about what I wanted as I embarked on my new adventure.  Did I ever want to get married?  Do I still want to have children?

The Sahara taught me this…what was broken inside was now healed.  I have the capability of loving again and being loved.  That is what the future holds for me.

Now when I think back to that Book of Dreams…maybe I want those secret dreams to come true now.  Maybe the time has come to believe in LOVE.

It’s time for the real dream.

I had this dream about a house a few years back.  It was so real to me in the dream.  It was so vivid and clear.  I knew every detail of it all the way down to the kitchen and the way the backyard was laid out.  I couldn’t stop thinking about that house the next day, so I went online to look for it.

I went with my intuition…and I found it.  It was actually the first listing I saw, eighth house down on the list.  Cost of the house: $13,000,000.  Location: Alpine, New Jersey.

When I looked at the pictures, all I kept thinking was, “This is MY house!”  It was real.  It existed.  It was just like in my dream.

Why would God give you a dream that felt so real (and then you discover that the place actually existed) if it wasn’t meant to be yours?

That house has been in my Book of Dreams ever since I found it.

What finding that house meant to me…those vivid dreams that feel so real…there is a reality behind it…a truth.  IT EXISTS.  Even love between two people that is so vivid and clear…IT EXISTS.  It really is there.

I read in a book once…can’t remember where…but the writer said that dreams are just a glimpse into another dimension of our soul.  We exist in separate dimensions and when we dream, we can see our soul in those other dimensions.  Maybe on this plane, we’re not together, but on other planes, we are.  Maybe on this plane, we’re not rockstars or famous actors.  On another plane, we are.

And when we dream…we get to see those lives that got to live their dreams.  It’s almost like in this scenario, it didn’t work, but in this other scenario, it did.  Then you wonder…was that really a past life, or just another life that succeeded in some other choose your own adventure book?

I realize after all of these years since I became a hockey writer that the whole point of my hockey adventure was to prove that dreams can come true in the most magical ways that you could ever imagine.

It makes cracking open that Book of Dreams once again and making them come true more possible than ever.  It makes me realize that if I’m going to be 100% honest with myself, those are the dreams that mean everything to me and I have to give 100% of myself to making them come true…even without the pages I tore out of it.

I’m about to make my most outrageous dreams come true.  Why?  Because those dreams are the dreams that are at the core of my being and they deserve to come true more than any other dream.

And how do I plan on making these dreams happen?  Just read Polly Campbell’s article…they are the most important steps in making dreams come true.

My Favorite UK Shop: WAREHOUSE

15 May 2012

Want to know what my GO TO store is for dresses, especially for big events (like the NHL Awards)?  That shop is WAREHOUSE!

I first got wind of this site last year when the soon to be Her Royal Highness was out shopping for her honeymoon.  She made a stop into Britain’s own Warehouse and bought some of the cutest outfits I’ve ever seen.

Well, if it’s good enough for a Duchess, it’s good enough for me!  What I was astounded by…how affordable everything was (especially when you hit their SALE tab).

I got so many beautiful dresses that they have become my go to place just for summer dresses.  Sure, I could shop there all year long, but they really catch my eye around summer when I can’t find what I’m looking for in the dress department.  Warehouse is always a savior.

Well, luckily for us ladies in the US, Warehouse has gone stateside as of today.  You can now shop exclusively online through their US site (instead of their UK site).

Here’s a look at some of this year’s summer cuteness:

This dress is $142.

This tropical number is only $89.

This delicious orange slice is $134.

This butterfly midi-dress is $116.

This one is my favorite!  This butterfly silk maxi is $178.

What I love most about Warehouse is their broad range in sizes.  Each item usually ranges in size 2-16…and they are true to size.

My NHL Awards dress fit perfectly…and I interviewed 13 different dresses.  The Warehouse dress was the only one that made the cut.  The other summer dresses I got from Wareshouse were perfect, too!

As far as basic dresses for summer, I picked up this bandeau dress last year.

At $46, you can’t go wrong!

The dress was very comfortable!  The only thing I didn’t like about the dress was the slit…it went from the waist on down.  I actually took it to my dry cleaners and had them sew the slit up.  After that…perfection!

For those who see something you like, use code: LFW20 to take 20% off your first order.  Talk about a nice savings to start your summer dress collection.

For those who see a whole lot of something you LIKE…you can enter their UK site’s Warehouse contest.

Follow the link, and then follow the contest instructions.  You could win your Must-Have wardrobe from Warehouse.

Italy Bound

15 May 2012

While most of the hockey world heads to the Draft, I’m heading out of the country.  Destination: ITALY.

It’s kind of funny because my boss and I always book our vacations and then later he mentions to me where he’s taking the family this year.  I always look at him strange, because ironically…that’s where I booked my vacation this year, too!  {Not at the same time, mind you.}

While he’s heading to Venice and Florence, I’ll be in Venice, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Naples, Capri, Pompeii and Sorrento.  That definitely means I’ll be packing very light!  I have a lot of olive oil to bring back! 🙂

There will be a lot to see.  One of the things I’m looking forward to seeing the most is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Venice and Verona.  I’m really looking forward to seeing Juliet’s House and catching Don Giovanni at the Arena in Verona…an opera under the stars!

On my birthday (aka Free Agency day), I’ll be in Rome, running around the city from the early hours until late at night when I’m running around the ‘haunted’ part of Rome.

Oh yeah, I guess I am going on the ghost tour in Venice, too.

I always like to go on these little ghost tours to see if they’re full of crap or not.  I went on the Jack the Ripper tour in London, which was cool because I got to see a lot of London from the historical point of view and then see how it has changed in the last century.  Then some really super tall Chara-ish guy passed out after he saw a photo of the most gruesome Ripper murder ever.

I felt bad for the guy.  He went into a seizure when he hit the pavement.  That ended his tour right then and there.

As for Italy…besides taking on the ghosts of Italy, I’ll be sampling a lot of food and buying up a lot of ingredients.

Ever since I saw Eat, Pray, Love and that pizza from Naples…I’ve been craving it ever since!  That is the main reason why I’m going to Naples.

I’ve got 3 different travel guides I’ve picked up over the years (the latest one on Milan I picked up at the library’s seasonal book sale in my $5 per bag of books deal).

Speaking of travel books, I only buy DK Eyewitness Travel guides.  What I love about them is that each book has a walking tour to cover all of the important locations, as well as give you a history of each spot (and give you an idea of what photos you should take at each spot).  I usually walk away with all of the same photos that were in the travel guide.

When I was in Vysehrad in Prague, I got a little lost on the walking tour, but the sights I did find were gorgeous!  Each marker, each bridge, each statute…they were all described as to its importance in the book.  It was nice just to take a moment and take in each place that is marked on the tour.

After I came back from Prague, I only bought DK Eyewitness Travel as my guidebooks.  They are so much easier to navigate, especially if you like to go off on your own and look around (great for solo travelers that don’t want to pay for the tour guides…this is basically $20 or less for a tour of everything in the city you want to see).  They provide you with maps for each tour showing you all of the stopping points and things you should notice or do.

Most importantly…those subway maps are the most important maps in the book!

When I get back from Italy, I’ll have lots and lots of photos from all over the country.  I’ll be armed with recipes and lots of ingredients, because who knows…I may ask to go back into the kitchen to learn more about the dishes they make!

Between now and leaving the US, I have to brush up on my Italian again.  The last time I spoke Italian was my sophomore year in college…and that was 16 years ago!

This is actually a birthday present to myself.  I’ve never taken myself anywhere on my birthday.  I usually travel in late September/early October.  So this will be a big treat, because I’ve always dreamed of seeing Italy!

More Vintage Finds

11 May 2012

In my Friday Loves post, I mentioned my newest addition to the purse closet…a vintage Gucci handbag.  Yes, I love it dearly!

Thanks to Bonanza.com, I’ve been able to acquire a Fendi messenger bag, Prada handbag, and a Gucci leather hobo.  I think the Fendi has been my favorite find of the lot, because it was a $1,000 bag that was sold to me for $49.00 (the guy got it at an estate auction and had no idea what he had on his hands…he paid $1 for it. I bought it from him for $49, knowing it was a $1,000 bag…here he was thinking he made a good buck.  He could have sold it for a whole lot more because it had never been used).

The thing about buying vintage from Bonanza.com, I’ve been focusing on buying only major couture designer names for the same price I would pay for most of these cute non-designer names.

Now, I’ve added two more names to the purse closet.  I’ve been wanting a Valentino Garavani bag for a very long time.  Well, the wait is over.

This is an authentic Valentino tote bag that I picked up for $99.  It definitely beats the Red Valentino price of $450 and the Valentino prices of $1,000+.  Inside the bag is the signature red silk that Valentino is famous for.

But that wasn’t the only bag I picked up.  I also picked up this Giorgio Armani (never used/mint condition) bag for $45.

Armani bags are not cheap at all.  Starting price is $880.  For $45…really you’re not twisting my arm at all.

Bonanza.com has actually been my go to place as of late for major designers that I’ve been lusting after for a long time.  Unlike Ebay, they don’t have the auctions.  You’re not bidding against anyone.  You see it, you like it, you put it in your cart and checkout.

I’ve had great service from every seller.  I got these two bags very quickly.  I ordered it on Friday, got them both on Monday!  I got the Gucci bag the very next day.

Everything is as described.

Bonanza.com is a stickler about fake items.  If you see something that says FAKE all over it, you can report them immediately.  The link is right there in every sale item.  They even follow up with you after you receive your items to make sure that the item you received was authentic and not fake.

Now, the key to knowing what’s fake and what is not fake…do your research online.  I think probably the hardest fake to figure out has been Louis Vuitton.  There are hundreds of sites that will show you how to spot a fake Louis.  It will even explain how the serial numbers work on each bag.

Also, if you’re like me and travel with designer handbags, you never want to carry a fake into a foreign country, especially in Europe.  I had a Just Cavalli bag with me when I was traveling from London to Paris by train.  They saw my bag, made me empty out all of the contents and then they inspected the bag itself!

They were checking to make sure I was carrying an authentic Just Cavalli bag.  Thank goodness for the hologram image and the huge Just Cavalli hardware inside the bag as proof (I mean…I paid over $500 for the bag…it better be real).

Each time I went between London and Paris they did the exact same thing again and again…they inspected the bag to see if it was a fake.  I’ve even had it happen in Canada when I was traveling between the US and Montreal.  They inspect the bag for authenticity.

Also, something you should really think about…if you’re going to buy a fake for the exact same price that an authentic vintage item would cost…that may not be the coolest buy you’ve ever made.

If you can’t go brand new, at least try to go vintage.  I know some girls are broke college girls that just want the IT bag right now because they saw it on Gossip Girl.  Ladies, don’t waste your money on the fake Louis Vuittons of the world.  Buy something cute and in your budget range.  If it’s couture you’re looking for…try sample sale sites and Bonanza.com…or save, save, save for that luxury purchase.  You may find that after you can afford it, you may not want it anymore.

Then again, I always say…if it’s meant to be, you’ll find it on sale at the price you want to pay.  If it’s not meant to be yours, it will always be out of your reach.

As for me…I’m saving up for a new YSL bag.  $1600 if I buy it brand new at Saks, $1,000 if I buy from a sample sale site, $700-$800 if I get it used from Bonanza.com.  Hmm…

Friday Loves

11 May 2012

I haven’t done one of these in a while, so I thought I’d share some of the things I love right now.

1. Yves Saint Laurent’s Paris Premiere Roses.  I bought this fragrance a few months ago, just so I could rack up $250 worth of YSL purchases so I could get the free cosmetic bag (with samples) {it was cheaper than buying a YSL wallet/clutch/case which rings in at $450}.

I usually don’t buy fragrances so blindly without sampling it, but I liked the name “PARIS” (who wouldn’t) and the bottle.  What I didn’t expect was how much I would love it!

The scent of roses reminds me of the riad I stayed in when I was in Marrakech, Morocco.  The woman who owned the place had the entire riad smelling like roses.  It was so fragrant that I had to ask my driver and guide to ask the owner what the fragrance was.  We then set off on a mission to find the bottled scent of roses.

I walked away with the wrong bottle of ‘roses’ and ended up with jasmine instead (which I love just as much), but this bottle of roses makes up for buying the wrong fragrance in Morocco.

I love YSL’s Paris so much that I spray it on my sheets every morning so that when I go to bed later that night, the bed will smell like roses.  The scent isn’t too strong or parfumey.  It’s the right scent to make you smell just like roses.

I highly recommend!  Price is $95 per bottle.

2. Vintage Gucci.  I am a little beyond obsessed with Gucci right now.  I mean…vintage Gucci handbags.

It’s interesting to read the history behind vintage Gucci handbags from the 80s and 90s.  Gucci used to cost $125 and every girl wanted one.

Here I was squirreling away Saks gift cards and savings for a $1,690 Gucci tote bag!  $125 for Gucci????  Please give me a time machine!

THIS is the Gucci lust in question:

Well, thanks to Bonanza.com, I don’t have to invent a time machine to purchase Gucci for $125.  I can pay vintage prices today.  The vintage Gucci bag in the first photo was in excellent condition.  I got that baby for $55.

When I opened up the box to reveal my newest vintage Gucci addition…it was so beautiful I almost cried.  This is my second vintage Gucci that I’ve purchased for under $100.  The first one was for $35 because the girl wasn’t for sure if it was authentic or not…oh, it was alright.  I inspected that bag to make sure all of the Gucci details were there.  Number one sign it’s probably authentic…it’s leather, not pleather.

I really, really love this new addition to my purse closet.  I really can’t wait to start carrying it around.  You never know how wonderful Gucci is until you open up a box and you’re so happy to have Gucci in your hands, you almost start crying.

3. Pangea Organics Lip Balm in Egyptian Fennel Grapefruit & Sweet Orange.  There is something strange about this lip balm.  It will enamor your pleasure sensors when you put this on your lips.  It actually produces a happy rush that gets the happy endorphins flowing in your brain.  Then it gets your addiction senses going that you just have to have this on your lips all of the time.

No lip gloss, Chapstick, lip balm or whatever you want to call it rivals that addictive power of Pangea Organics lip balm.

And it’s organic!

Birchbox sent me the Egyptian Fennel Grapefruit and Sweet Orange ‘scent’ in my box last month.  I tried it as soon as I took it out of the box and it was like a “WHOA!  I LOVE THIS!” moment.  Not too many beauty products get that kind of reaction out of me.

The next day I went online and ordered another one…just in case the one Birchbox just sent me would run out in the next day or two (yep, I loved it that much).

The rational side of me now has one at home and one that I carry in my purse.  It’s replaced my love for Body Shop’s Watermelon (or Pink Guava) lip balm.

This is a highly recommended product for those girls who prefer lip balms over lipsticks.

4. The Last Apprentice book series.  If you loved Harry Potter and just want to get your hands on a new book series for kids, I’d like to introduce you to the Spook Series from Joseph Delaney.

His first book in the series: The Last Apprentice (Revenge of the Witch), drew me in.  I am so hooked that I ended up heading to the library and requesting the books from all of the other libraries.

It’s a story about a boy from England from centuries ago that is sent to be an apprentice of a Spook.  A Spook is a demon hunter, ghost buster, witch hunter, and master over taking care of things that crawl out of the shadows.  They are the soldiers against the dark.  Little does Tom Ward know that he has a knack for this job…and he doesn’t know why.

He befriends a young girl who turns out to be a witch.  She becomes his only friend as the books progress (and I think she’s starting to turn into his love for life).  Together, along with the Spook, they go out and fight some of the most frightening creatures of the dark.

What I love most about the book, there are always little lessons in forming the minds of kids.  Like this quote:   “If we could only change the hearts of men and women, the dark would be weakened.”

There is so much truth in that quote.

At any rate, I highly recommend this series, especially if you like those scary kinds of books.  If you don’t, this isn’t the right book for you.  Try FableHaven…that was equally as fun of a read with loads of adventure and fairies and unicorns and all of that.  {There were scary creatures, too.}

5. Fashion By Alicia. I always like to leave off my Friday Loves with a blogger who has a site that I love to stalk.  Let me introduce you to Fashion By Alicia.  I’ve been following her blog for a long time now.  I always like to see what she finds and puts together for her site.

Recently, her site (and Twitter) has really peaked my interest because she’s been running and working out!  You can definitely see the change in her photos and she looks fabulous.

For any fashionista, it’s kind of cool to watch someone’s look change when their life changes.  Even her hair is different!  You can tell that she’s much happier about her new look and her new physique.  She’s working hard, doing marathons, and sharing with us how she’s changing.

It reminds me that I should probably follow suit and start working out more.  Sure, I have a contest with my boss to see who can stick to a push-up mentality for the next year.  It’s our challenge to work on our bat wing arms and challenge our bodies.  As for Alicia inspiring me, she just makes me feel like going running more often.

Take a look at her site.  She has contests, fashion finds, and many upon many ideas to share.  You’ll grow to love it just as much as I do. 🙂

Mint to Be Mint

10 May 2012

So I’m a little behind in shopping posts…I blame this on the extra workload at the office, both of my teams in the playoffs (i.e. I have two teams to cover, but mainly the Devils), AND I’m just a little beyond obsessed with trading at Little Black Bag.  You should have seen some of the stuff I scored…oh wait, I was supposed to share that with you…  (in time)

But today, I’m going to share with you a dress I just had to buy.

Isn’t it gorgeous?

This just so happens to be a Lucky magazine find at Lulu’s.  This Mint to Be Mint dress from Lulu’s is $26 with Lucky code: LUCKY1.  {Without the code, the dress is $44}

This dress sold out quickly the first time around.  I put my name on the list for notification when the dress came back in stock…a few days later it was back in stock (in my size) and I instantly whipped out the debit card.

This dress is perfect for just about anything this spring/summer.  From date nights to weddings to just hanging out with the girls in the park after work…this is the perfect warm weather essential.

It will also be perfect for Phoenix in the upcoming weeks. 🙂

Things My Grandfather Taught Me That Made No Sense to Me as a Kid

9 May 201212 October 2016

2016-10-01-14-42-51Growing up, I always thought my grandfather did weird things.  He recycled those styrofoam containers from food packaging and used them as plates.  He swore by apple cider vinegar like it was the cure-all for everything.  He gardened, canned, took care of bees, made his own mead, did pottery, rarely if ever watched television, and was always outside.

He wrote letters and took photos.  He traveled all over.

He owned half of Indianapolis, buying up homes in the poorest neighborhoods.  He rented them out to the poor on a rent to own basis.

He wasn’t a Christian man, even though his kids were.  You try to convert him and he would just laugh in your face.  All he would say was that when I was older, he would tell me what he believed.

He dated the same woman for 30+ years and never married her.  To me, that black lady was my grandma, you couldn’t tell me otherwise…even though she never lived with my grandfather.

These days, when I look at those styrofoam containers, I think of how it’s such a hazardous waste.  Then I think about how my grandfather reused them again and again like plates.  Granted, I can’t bring myself to do it, but I always think of how eco-conscious my grandfather was decades before being eco-friendly was cool.

I think about how important gardening and canning was to him, just like I do now when I plant herbs and can the summer bounty from the farmer’s market.

I think of him every time I pour honey into my coffee, and how I used to go out and he would show me how bees made honey and how to collect the honey.

I always think of him every single time I pour apple cider vinegar on my food to settle my stomach or use it to clean the house or fix some health issue.

I definitely think of him every single time I get sick and drink hot water with fresh lemon mixed with honey.  It’s the only thing that makes me feel better.

When I think about investing for my future and making sure that I always have income coming in, I think of how my grandfather did it.  He spent money on only the things that brought him happiness (like food or spending time with his family), and invested everything else in the community.  I think of how I should invest in the poor in order to help the community.  I think of buying property and ‘renting to own’…especially in this economy where banks are rarely loaning out money to anyone.

When I think of God and religion, I realize that none of his beliefs made sense until I realized just how alike my grandfather and I are.  He taught me the secrets of the universe.  He helped me unlock that treasure trove of information in order to live the most amazing life possible.

Along with that…he helped me to find HAPPINESS.

Happiness does not lie in any religion.  Happiness lies in that connection with God.  When you realize through God anything is possible…you embark on an incredible journey in life.  You don’t need religion, because you’ve evolved beyond the need for it.

You’re not searching for God, because you’ve already found him.  And if you’re very lucky, you get to meet the mother.  You know, that goddess that NO ONE talks about.

You know what God looks like.  You know what powers and treasures are awarded in that connection with the Father.  He’s always talking to you, and you’re always listening.  You don’t even have to say a word…he knows all.  His solution to any problem you may have is much better than any solution you could ever come up with yourself.

If you want to feel love, peace, joy and happiness in the purest of forms the same way a baby feels those emotions, you have to be continuously connected to God.  He gives you all of those things.

My grandfather lived his life only keeping the things that were sentimental to him like photos of the family (alright, if I’m going to be honest here…19 photos of me and only 3 of my brother), his favorite easy chair, a blanket my mother knitted for him, a chair his girlfriend gave to him, and the basic things that were needed to furnish a home.

He did not live in excess.  He lived with what he needed, because it was the only thing he wanted.

He never had a cell phone or a computer.  If he had a TV or DVD player, it was because one of his kids bought it for him for Christmas.

He found peace in creativity by creating pieces of pottery or working with ceramics.

The moments in life he enjoyed were those moments when he would sit next to me and tell me stories from the Great Depression and the World Wars.  He’d tell me the stories of the history of our family.

The moments in life I enjoyed with him were those moments when I would make him sit on the couch and read the funnies to me on Sunday mornings.  I enjoyed those stories he told to me of the past.  I used to sit next to him and tell him stories about Paris or Thailand or Japan…all the places he sent me to.  I would paint that world I had seen and watch his eyes light up as he imagined the places I had seen, the things I had done, and the food I had tasted.

Those adventures he experienced were through my tales, until one day I said to him, right before my high school graduation as he was getting ready to prepare his Will, that we only have one life to live in this lifetime.  He should go out and do anything and everything he ever dreamed of doing.  I told him to sell all of the houses he rented, including the ones that he kept in the family, because I didn’t want any of them when he passed away.

I told him that he should go out and see the world while he could.  Do everything and anything he ever dreamed of doing.  What would happen if he found out that this was the only life he had and he never truly lived it?

I went off to college that fall and he decided to take my advice.  He sold all of the homes (except the one he lived in) and spent the rest of his life traveling all over the world (before he got sick with cancer).  He traveled to the places I had been.  He tried all of the things I had tried.  He went to see that world I had painted for him…and he fell in love with it.

While I was in college, our stories were shared through letters.  He wrote of the places he had been, the things he had seen, the food he had tasted.  He always sent photos to me in his letters.

During the holidays and summer breaks, we would sit at the table and talk about life, and he would give me all of the details of everything I had missed out on.

After he died, I learned of all of the things he had tried to protect me from.  He always wanted me to focus on the good, but he made sure to warn me of the dangers that lay ahead for me when it came to the family.  I think he knew I would be cast out the second he died.  He was right.  They cast me out before he took his last breath.

He had warned me what would happen and that he didn’t stand for it.  Because he knew that I would be excommunicated by the family, he constructed his Will to inform them that he had cut them all off.  He then left instructions with the executor of the estate to make sure my brother and I were taken care of.  He tried to hide that fact from the rest of the family so that the pain I would endure from them would not be so great.

It’s funny that my grandfather did his big f*ck you to the family when he died.  I remember when someone in the family would walk up and hear him telling me stories from the old days, they would ask, “Why didn’t I ever know about this?”

He would stop telling the story after he realized someone else was listening.  It was as if he didn’t want anyone to know because it was our secret. It was the same with his brother, they would both sit around telling stories to me from the War and Great Depression.  The second someone else wanted to listen in, they grew quiet.

In his death, I saw the whole picture as clearly as he wanted to paint it for me, but didn’t want me to see while he still lived.  I saw how my aunt was jealous of our relationship.  She wanted that type of relationship with him.  She would always say all throughout that week after his death, “There is nothing special about you.”

I sat there and listened to her and my family condemn my grandfather’s soul to hell because he didn’t believe in their religion.  Everyone expected me to get up and say something.  I just sat there, because I knew if I got up, I would have condemned them all to hell, locked the doors and burned the place to the ground with all of them in it.

The sad thing is…we knew they would do this…condemn his soul to hell (and this was before they found out about the Will).

My brother left the family because of everything in the end.  He always tried to stay out of it, but then he realized that I never fought back.  I never corrected anyone when they told lies about me.  I never stood up for myself.  I never said anything.

He sat through one too many dinners before he realized he couldn’t take it anymore.  He had heard enough of them speaking ill of me.  His point was…I had done nothing to hurt them.  I had never sinned against them.

This was that green monster called jealousy that had taken over.  It’s the kind of jealousy that has someone saying, “There’s nothing special about you.”

I actually felt bad for all of them.  They had no comprehension of the great sin they had committed against me.  I felt their pain in what my grandfather did to protect me.  It was his way of saying that despite what was about to happen, I wasn’t alone and he needed me to understand that.

I learned after his death that my grandmother didn’t come around much when the family was around because my aunt is racist.  She forbade my grandfather from bringing his girlfriend to her wedding, because ‘what would her friends say about her father dating a black woman.’  He never forgave her for that or the subsequent racist remarks that followed.

My aunt got her other siblings on board with this…making it a controversial thing if my grandmother came by for dinner or any event. I was always asking why I couldn’t see her more.  I didn’t learn until after my grandfather’s death why that was the case.

During his funeral I told the family what they were doing wasn’t right.  They refused to acknowledge the person that my grandfather spent so many years with.  She nursed him when he was sick.  She loved him when no one else did.  She brought him so much happiness.  If they loved my grandfather…why couldn’t they love her?

Oh, that was definitely more fodder for me to get tossed out of the family.

It’s been 5 years since my grandfather died.  He would have been 85 this past Sunday.  One thing I’ve learned from my grandfather since he died is how to live.

At the Meditation Center, one of my friends said to me that there is a presence that follows me around.  It’s a good presence.  When I told them about my grandfather, they said that was the presence they felt.  He’s always looking after me.

Truth is, I feel him there all of the time.  Each time I eat an apricot, I think of him and how he would always buy me dried apricots when I came to visit him.  Each time I do something eco-friendly, I think of how he had taught me how to be green when I was a kid.  When I stand in various places around the world, I have that moment where I wish he could see what I am seeing…and then I feel him standing next to me taking in Prague from the old castle walls in Vysehrad.

When they give me foreign coins when I travel, I always look at them and smile.  I think of how I’m continuing the adventure and the stories my grandfather and I used to tell to each other.

When I’m sitting in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris watching the tourists walk by, I can see images from the past of the time my grandfather stood in front of the cathedral in his French beret…a tradition he picked up and continued until he passed away.  I have that photo sitting on top of my refrigerator in my French themed kitchen.

When I realize how incredible this dream has been over the years, I am always surprised that it all started when he died.  He gave me the secrets on how to unlock and live your dreams in the most amazing ways.  It was the greatest gift anyone could have given to me.

More importantly, he showed me the way to finding God.  He led me there.  I remember sitting in the Meditation Center a year after his death saying, “So you’re telling me that what I’ve known my entire life is really the truth?  I’m not crazy?”  The sister laughed at me and said, “No, you’re not crazy.”

I always wondered who I got all of this spiritual stuff from and the evolved consciousness of being.  I got them all from my grandfather.  He was just like me.

We have evolved in ways that most people do not understand.  Just like he could see what would happen in the future and plan for that day, I had the same gift.

He had the ability to hear what is not being said.  When someone speaks to us, if they lie, we only hear the truth.  If they try to skirt around the truth, we still hear and see the truth as clear as day.

There are other abilities that my grandfather did not have that I have…like the ability to manipulate the universe around me, to make people do what I want them to do without saying a word…I can just push the thought into their head and they do it.  I have the ability to walk into a knife fight and calm everyone down.  They immediately forget why they were mad to begin with.

At the Meditation Center, they help me to harness the power of my mind because it was becoming too powerful and things were overflowing.  I felt like I was going crazy.  It was too much.  The power I had inside of me, made me feel like I was going nuclear.

Sometimes not understanding what one is can be dangerous.  After you learn who you are and how you have evolved as a human being, you start to take the steps in a direction to learn how to control the things that you can do that nobody else has the answer to.

The sisters at the Center used to watch me meditate.  They wanted to see where I went when I talked to God.  One sister watched me and went into my mind to see where I was going.  She saw me sitting in the garden talking to God.

When I came out of the meditation she asked me where I was.  I said I was speaking with God.  She smiled and said, “You were in the garden.”  In Indian lore, there is only one garden.  In Christianity, it’s called the Garden of Eden.  The only way anyone could enter into that garden today…they would have had to have been there before and be without sin in order to enter into it.  Their soul would have to be PURE.

The sisters told me, “You are special.”

They didn’t say this because it’s one of those meditative…everyone is special moments.  They said I was different than anyone that had ever walked through their doors before.  Most people have to learn how to connect with God.  They don’t walk in from off the street and already know God and his ways.  To them, I was fulfilling a prophecy.  It was a sign to them that a new age is being ushered in.

I am thankful to the sisters there for helping me to control what I can do.  I’ve always had issues with anger and someone dropping dead (by an act of God…like a heart attack) because they pissed me off to the nth degree.  They taught me how to use these abilities for good and to change the world for the better.  In other words, I don’t get mad like I used to.

They taught me the things I needed to know that my grandfather had unlocked for me.  They taught me how to live the dream.  They taught me how I could change the world.  They gave me the tools I needed to do those things.

I was able to finally not feel conflict from what my family and their religion said was God.  I was free.  I knew who God was all along.  I’ve been talking to him my entire life.

I remember telling my father the things I learned.  At one point I felt what he was feeling, that fear that I was right and everything he knew and believed in was wrong.  I felt that hint of jealousy that I knew God and he didn’t.  He didn’t even feel an ounce of what I felt – that joy, peace and happiness.  I had found that connection he had been looking for his entire life.  He was afraid to admit that maybe that religion he engrossed himself in was wrong.

But like all Christians, he immediately said I was worshipping the Devil.  No one can talk to God, so I must be talking to the Devil.  They have to go through Jesus Christ.  I then responded, “Why do I have to go through my brother to talk to you when I can just call you and talk to you myself?”  [Yep, he was pissed at me after I said that, because I made my point.]

The thing is, my Dad knows that I’m a little different.  He always looked at me with a fear of God in his eyes, because he knew I could see right into his soul and it scared the hell out of him.

In his world, I had to be quiet about the things I could do.  It was whispered.  Everyone was afraid.  They walked on eggshells around me.  No one ever wanted to make me angry, because they knew that God was siding with me.

But these days, those things that I could do and had to keep quiet about…I now can do without feeling remorse or that I’m going to be burned at the stake for being a witch, because they don’t understand that this is the next step in evolution.

My grandfather and my mother knew that I would do something great for the world one day.  Believe it or not, I already put my plan into motion.

When I wrote “A New Heaven,” I was honest about what was going on in my world and what I was going to do next.  That post is being passed around and finding itself at the top of search engines everywhere.  You think God has his hand in that?  I think he’s getting the message out…this is the plan.

We have to be the change we seek in the world.  It starts from within.  This is the plan I’ve put into motion to bring a New Heaven into this world.

This is what I mean by living.  This is the path my grandfather had always seen that I would take.  His investment in me at a young age…he had his reasons.  He saw what I would become and that was why I was special to him.  This was his gift to the world.  He was preparing me for the world I was about to change.

That person he saw in me, I strive to be her every single day.  It’s a never ending learning process…just like this month’s lesson is all about my intuition.  If God said it’s happening…you best believe it is happening.

This is my blind faith…I do what God wants me to do and don’t question it.  I go along for the ride, knowing that if I ask too many questions, it will only drive me crazy.  I should just enjoy the moment, because I have faith that whatever God has planned for me is much better than anything I could ever dream up.  That is my blind faith in God.

I have not put blind faith in man and his religion.  I have put blind faith in God.  I’ve learned that was the best decision.  That’s the #1 thing that my grandfather taught me that didn’t make sense until I was older.

Do Your Homework

26 April 2012

If you’ve ever walked into one of these discount retailers like Loehmann’s, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Daffy’s, etc., you’re usually bombarded with items that are cheaper than the department store prices.  The thing you need to keep in mind…you’re not always getting the best deal.

Take for instance the Valentino scarf.  Each scarf retails somewhere between $330-$540 in finer department stores.

I’ve seen Valentino scarves hit sample sale sites for somewhere between $105-$300.  Good deal, right?

At Loehmann’s, I found the scarves discounted at $99.  Getting better, right?

How much did I pay for my closet full of Valentino scarves?  At Daffy’s, I paid $50 for each scarf.  That means that I paid 9%-15% of the retail price at Daffy’s.  They didn’t even have the scarves in the discount bin or on clearance.  That was their starting price.  Imagine if I did find their scarves in the clearance bin…talk about even bigger savings!

I actually spent a lot of time in Loehmann’s last night…just looking for a good deal.  I was in there a very long time, because the deals I’m used to were very hard to find there.  By the time I headed to the counter, I had a pair of Ellen Tracy kitty heels and a Pink Tartan cashmere shell in hand.

The retail price for both items came to $304.  I paid $44.12.  Even the sales lady was shocked at the deal I found…and I had to look for a very, very, very, very, very long time to find these deals (in my size).

The Pink Tartan top came to $14.  I found it on their clearance rack with the take an extra 60% off sticker on it.  Considering I’ve been trying to get a Pink Tartan top from Gilt.com for about a year now when it hits their sample sale…this deal was far better than any sale that Gilt could have offered.  Same goes with the Ellen Tracy kitty heels.

For those who are a bit astounded by these deals, here’s the trick to how I’ve been building my fantasy wardrobe.

1.  Shop around.  I shop around.

Don’t always lay your debit card down when you see a sale.  Sometimes you can do one better at either a sample sale site or other discount retailer.  It only benefits you to know who is selling what you want and their prices.

I usually stop into Daffy’s each week to see what new stuff they have.  It’s very rare that I see the same stuff over and over again.  There’s always new stuff and new displays.

Daffy’s is probably one of the best ways to comparison shop in NYC.  I have found the biggest discounts with them.  Knowing what they have and what they offer, when I go to other retailers (like Loehmann’s or Bolton’s), I know what Daffy’s going price is for the item.  It helps me to decide what the better deal is.

No, that Valentino scarf at Loehmann’s is not a deal…but those Ellen Tracy heels are.  Pink Tartan?  They don’t sell the brand at Daffy’s, but on Gilt, the same sweater was $44 last month.  I was willing to pay that amount at the time (before they sold out in my size).  So $14 is definitely a steal that shouldn’t be passed up!

Don’t always rush to buy things when you see the big SALE sign come up.  I’ve found that a little bit of patience will score that item at a lesser price.  Who knows?  You may decide a month later you don’t really want that DKNY dress after all.

Also, you never want to have buyer’s remorse a month later when you see how that same item went down by a lot!  You can’t return it because you wore it already.  You can’t do a price adjustment because that period had expired.

Sometimes it’s better to wait it out for a better price.  If it’s meant to be yours, you’ll find it at a lower price you are willing to pay (and be happy about it).  If it’s not meant to be yours…then it won’t resurface.

2.  Have Patience.  I have only ONE friend that has patience enough to sort through the racks like I do.  All of my other friends would rather pay the retail price at their favorite retailer than to bother sorting through racks.

If you’re like me and realize that a true shopaholic finds the adventure and excitement in finding and scoring an amazing deal…then you know that patience is virtuous.

I am a stickler about quality.  I only stick with designers that have a consistent history of putting out fashionable and qualitative merchandise.  It’s like my love affair with Valentino…I know his workmanship just by touching the fabric.  I know it belongs to him before I even check the tag.

Finding the right items for a fantasy wardrobe lies completely in incorporating items that will last you the next 20-30 years (and still be fashionable).  Those are the couture pieces.  Finding those pieces at prices you can afford or are willing to pay…it takes patience and waiting for the right time to pounce on a deal that is too good to be true.

I’ve bought Valentino shoes for less than $100, a dress for $2, scarves for $50, sunglasses for $60.  It took patience and a lot of looking around different sample sale sites and discount retailers to find Valentino for under $100.  When I did find it, you better believe I bought it!

When you walk into these giant discount retailers, go in with patience to sort through racks upon racks of merchandise.  You’ll always find a hidden jem somewhere that’s on some back wall with a big clearance tag plus an extra big percentage off.  It will be a huge steal.  That’s what you’re looking for in the hunt.

For me, if I see something I like, I then look at the quality, designer, and then the price (in that order).  If any of them do not agree with my likes…it’s not worth the buy.

*****

Now, some people may get the idea that I’m a bit snobbish when it comes to what I buy…only buying designer.  I buy both designer and non-designer.  What determines if I buy something non-designer…it has to be a basic staple item (like a tee, cardigan, tank, pants, etc.) because these are items you’ll always wear, which means you’ll have a slightly higher turnover.  When I buy designer, I’m buying an ‘investment piece’ for the wardrobe.

When I want to feel beautiful…I wear Valentino.  It’s one thing to wear something beautiful, quite another to radiate beauty from within.  His clothing gives me the confidence I need to feel beautiful, all the way down to the way the silk feels touching my body…like a whisper.  That, to me, is worth the investment.

Very few pieces of clothing have ever made me feel that way.  Valentino, on the other hand, always makes me feel that beauty confident.  That’s why I invest in his clothing.

I know women like to pay a lot for designer shoes.  I won’t wear designer shoes outdoors…only indoors.  I wear cheap flats wherever I can get them for outdoors (Charlotte Russe is one of my faves).

Rule of thumb, I never spend a lot on fad items (like this season’s neon color).  If it went out of style back in the 80s and had to wait almost 15-20 years to re-emerge…it’s a fad item.

Of course, you could keep those fad items for when it re-emerges 15-20 years later…but you would be banking on your body never changing, never being ruined in storage, won’t be too young for you when the trend re-emerges, and that it will survive all those years of lugging it around from one home to the next.

You invest in the pieces that you will wear again and again for the rest of your life.  When you pick up a fad trend, spend very little money on it, knowing you’ll be donating it within a year or two.

Because I’ve had over 15 years to build my wardrobe with the basic necessities (from little black dresses, underwear, coats, suits, etc.), I can now start adding couture pieces…one at a time.  Once upon a time, that was so far out of reach, but thanks to living in NYC, discount retailers and sample sale sites, it’s made that fantasy more realistic without going into debt for that dream.

Just remember that couture deals are to be had…you just have to have patience…and you have to go looking for it!  Like I say, if you want something badly enough…it will eventually come into your universe when the moment is right.

****

Thinking about fads and keeping them…

I’m reminded of the things my mother packed up and kept as a memory of her years before having me.  That just so happened to be her first clothes when she came to America back in 1972.  Back then, she was a little itty bitty woman…90 pounds, 5 feet tall.

She had these bell bottom jeans in several different colors with faces of people on it.  They were ugly…and I do mean ugly!  But she loved them for some reason.  She thought that a) they would come back in style, and b) that she’d one day return to her 20-something figure.

Forty years later, they would have made for awesome handbags, because those jeans never came back in style again, yet she kept them thinking that after two children she’d be able to get back into her clothes again.  Forget about the age 30+ spread and the post-baby fat that NEVER goes away.  That dream just never came to fruition…and those jeans ended up disappearing in a trash bin 25 years later during the divorce.

We moved from home to home several times in my youth.  Those jeans survived all the way to when I finally went off to college.  It was only then that she finally let them go, admitting the truth to herself.  It never came back in style…she never got her old body back.

If you’re going to keep something that long…either upcycle them into something you could use (even as a piece of canvased artwork, those jeans would have been cool on display…but not to wear) or let it be something iconic like a Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress that has still been in style since she first introduced them to the world (just watch a young Cybill Shepherd in Robert DeNiro’s legendary “Taxi Driver” from 1976…that DVF dress never went out of style) …or save something iconic like what Jackie O or Hepburn would have worn.  Look to the fashion icons and follow their lead.  Those are the pieces you keep…never the fad items.

I Won’t Cry, I’m Going to Smile Instead

9 April 2012

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss

Saturday was the last regular season game of my NHL hockey writing career.  As I announced it on Twitter, I probably didn’t start to get all choked up until someone from the NHL Alumni tweeted how sad they were to hear that it was my last game.  It meant a lot to get that kind of tweet.

I realized, as I was looking at Marty Brodeur in goal at the other end of the ice, that this could be his last regular season game as well…only time will tell if that is what he decides.  Maybe he’ll come back another year…

This isn’t the time for me to be sad about leaving…it’s a time for me to smile at what I have accomplished.  When I look back at all of the opportunities that have been afforded to me in the past few years by the NHL, the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils, and numerous hockey players across the league, I actually can’t believe that those things even happened.  It seems like it was all a dream.

I never realized how much I was able to do and accomplish until a reporter over at the Rangers told me this season that I had done something in a short matter of time that he couldn’t even do in 20 years of his career…and that was be granted permission to cover the New Jersey Devils…from the Devils.  He said I was one hell of a writer…and that was why they let me in.  It’s not so often you hear that kind of compliment from another member of the media.

I’ve heard infamous stories about my career.  I’ve heard that no one can touch me because I’m protected by the NHL.  I’ve heard that I had an affair with some hockey player that followed me from team to team just to be close to me (for the record, it’s not true…but I know who spread it and I also know who started it…it’s what happens when people assume things).

Those are the crazy stories you hear along this journey.  Most times, they’re not true…just rumors.

In my last international tour of duty with the NHL, I was asked to cover the Rangers across Europe.  You say Praha, and I’m there.  The NHL said Praha…and I was there.  I didn’t cover just the NHL on this tour of duty…I ended up covering both teams and that included Sparta and Zug during the Rangers pre-season exhibition.

Something happened that I didn’t expect to happen while I was diving in and learning about each club.  I found out later what happened after I published my work (and I haven’t even published the story about my findings on Kladno yet).  Hockey players playing abroad got wind of these articles and started sending me messages asking when I was going to cover their teams in Europe and Russia.  It’s not so often a writer receives requests like that, but I’ve seen it happen in the NHL too where players have requested that I write something about their team or a player there.

I had to think about these messages through most of this season and I realized…I don’t have to stop writing about hockey…I’m just choosing to move on to a different territory.

Over these past few years, one of the most unique experiences afforded to me by the NHL was their assistance in helping me to live my dream…to travel the world writing about the people I meet and telling their stories.  At the time, it was the stories that belonged to hockey teams and hockey players.  They opened that door for me to live that dream.

I probably didn’t start to realize I was living that dream until I was on a plane to Prague, Czech Republic thinking…”What in the hell am I doing?”  I was on a plane going to a foreign country that I’ve never been to before.  I hadn’t researched the country…I don’t even know how to even speak the language.  Worst yet, I still (to this day) don’t even know how to say the word COFFEE in Czech (on my to do list before I retire).

I literally thought I was insane for hopping on a plane, going to a foreign country all by myself when I didn’t even speak the language or know where I was going.  I thought I was literally going to have a panic attack when I headed to the customs agent with my passport.

But just as I arrived at the customs gate, there was a big sign of this smiling Czech I had been watching for the last 2 years.  It was Jaromir Jagr.  It was then that I knew that everything was going to be okay.

The people there were so nice.  I was fortunate to find several people that spoke English and helped me get to my hotel safely.  When I went to order food, despite the language barrier, it all worked out somehow.  The Czechs were so kind in helping me learn how to say those words that were 15 letters long (I mean really…I just give up on the 9th letter…why do the words have to be so long).

Everything about me changed in that first trip for the NHL…and it happened in my rookie year.

Keep in mind that I had done more in my rookie year than seasoned reporters have done in their 20 years of writing a sports column.  I went to Prague, the Winter Classic in Chicago, NHL All-Stars in Montreal, NHL Awards in Las Vegas, spent 8 hours with the Stanley Cup, learned all about poker as it relates to hockey from various NHL Alumni greats, and a whole lot more.

Most reporters just go about their job, hanging out with their computer until it’s time to write their story.  For me…I’m sure people from the NHL offices can tell you how they would stand there and watch me walking around looking at everything…I’m talking about EVERY SINGLE THING that went into making this game a reality.  I’d stand around watching them create the ice, put up the netting, prepare for the big games.  I’d watch the players practicing, photographing everyone…so I could become a better photographer.  I would talk to the camera guys, asking how this and that worked.

I absorbed everything the NHL could throw at me…why?  Because to me, this was so AMAZING.

It’s because of all of those years just going about my business, walking right in to the most obscure things…and just standing there like a fly on the wall…that people start to notice you.

After my first year, it was expected that I would switch over to go work for the NHL offices or a team.  I kept thinking…can the NHL (or teams) afford me, yet?  The answer was always a NO.  I make more money elsewhere…and I like my designer wardrobe.  I’m not ready to give up that lifestyle yet. 😉

Rick Peckham (Tampa Bay Lightning’s play-by-play announcer) said to me on my first trip to Prague during my rookie year what was being said about me behind the scenes.  He said that I was the person that would change the face of the NHL.  Those are big words and big expectations for anyone to see that in me right from the start…and he was just reiterating what he had heard about me.

Over the years, I wondered how I could do those things.  All throughout my life I had heard that no matter what things I set my mind to, I could achieve amazing things.  It’s followed me from the music biz to my philanthropy work to even my work today.

Yet, over the years I’ve watched how things have changed in the NHL based on pieces I’ve written.  I’ve seen the changes and I’ve watched the NHL evolve.

There are even stories I’ve written over these years that helped change people’s mindsets about the players they criticized and spoke ill of.  For the longest time, fans complained of how getting to know the New Jersey Devils was non-existent.  They wanted to know about their favorite players…what they’re like…what kind of food they eat…what their favorite book or movie is…they wanted to know about these guys, and that door always seemed to be closed to them.

That has changed slowly over the years.  I can tell you the exact moment it changed for the better…Martin Brodeur broke that barrier when he named David Clarkson the worst dressed…just because he knew it would piss him off because he said that about him.  All of a sudden fans everywhere started to think…hey, that Brodeur isn’t a jerk…he’s actually kind of cool.  They were able to see him in a new light…that he was actually a fun guy, playing the biggest joke of all time on his teammate.

There are the stories I’ll never print, and then there are the stories I printed just to change people’s minds about a player…like David Clarkson’s “Goon With a Big Heart.”  After that article, I never heard another Rangers fan say a bad word about him.  Actually, a lot of them became fans of his.  Why?  Because of that part where he pulled his car over to the side of the road and cried after he learned that one of his kids from “Clarky’s Kids” was going to die in a couple of weeks.

They even stopped calling him a goon after that.

Clarky is also the only hockey player that almost made me cry in that locker room.  We were both fighting back tears when he talked about that kid.  I knew that if I broke down and cried, he would have cried too.

There was also a time that Georges Laraque refused to be interviewed by the media.  I took a chance and asked the Montreal Canadiens if I could interview him, they went back and got Georges…and he did my second “Goon With a Big Heart” story.  Imagine my surprise when a famous lead guitarist told my editor how much he loved that piece.  It showed a different side of Georges that most people didn’t know about (or made fun of over the years).

There were other stories over the years that landed on the front page of Fox Sports like Marty Brodeur telling me honestly whether he would retire or not and Jacques Lemaire’s real retirement (the second time around).

There were also times where I asked a player a few times if he was certain he wanted me to print the comments he was making…knowing that it could mean he may not be asked back to the Club.  I printed it and watched a few days later how the team reacted to what he told me to print.  And yes, he was punished for it.

It’s not the first time that happened, but Sheldon Souray was probably the last time I would allow it to happen.  How odd to find out a year later that Sheldon was buddies with one of my friends from back in the day…one I used to party with back during the rockstar days.  Lesson learned…the world is much smaller than I think it is.

There was also this one moment in the New Jersey Devils locker room that I went up to this Russian after the rest of the press had walked away.  He was getting ready to be interviewed by a Russian reporter when he saw me standing there, waiting to speak to him.  He told the reporter to wait and turned to me.  I then asked him, “Are you going to re-sign here next year?”

He answered the question…along with all of the details on how he was going to do it.  The thing is…he remembered he told me.  I didn’t print it and he noticed that I hadn’t.

A few weeks before July 1, it was reiterated to me once again that what Ilya Kovalchuk told me that day was exactly what would happen.  Promises were made that Ilya did not (and would not) lie to me…if he said that was what was going to happen, then that was what was going to happen…and all of the assurances I could possibly need to print that Ilya would re-sign with the Devils were given to me…so I printed it.

{Fans have questioned why I would wait to release information like this, especially since I was given the most coveted information in the entire NHL.  1) I didn’t know Ilya well enough at the time to believe that he would not lie to me and humiliate me in the press.  This was my reputation on the line and I wasn’t about to print anything that I couldn’t get a 100% guarantee on. 2) I like to wait until the right time to release information.  I would rather be 100% correct, then to have fans accuse me of not knowing what I was talking about.  In other words, I don’t want to lie to my readers and I will not have any player make me into a liar based on the information he gave to me. 3) I also don’t like to print rumors.  I’d rather be 100% correct than to guess and say it’s fact.}

Players from the Devils weren’t sure who Ilya was talking to…but I had laid down clues that he had spoken to me.  Actually, I planted one directly to Martin Brodeur.  I gave him some info about Kovy that only the two of them would know about…only way I knew that happened (considering I wasn’t there when it happened, only those two)…would be if I found out from Kovalchuk’s camp directly.

I thought it was funny when one Devils player had his website guy ask me if Kovy was really talking to me and that he really was signing with the Devils.  It made me laugh because the players were just as anxious as the fans were to know if it was true!

It was always a question during the Summer of Kovalchuk who was really talking to the Kovalchuk camp.  The ones they were talking to, we knew who the others were…and they were very selective with who they spoke with and released information through.

The WOW factor in my career has always been that moment in the locker room when Ilya Kovalchuk told me exactly what he was going to do in free agency.  It was the most coveted information in the entire NHL…and he gave that story to me first.

When Mats Sundin decided he was going to retire and play professional poker…he released that information through Inside Hockey…because they remembered there was this reporter there that would understand the significance in this decision and write the story the way they needed it to be released.

I almost had a career covering poker and hockey after that release…if I hadn’t gone to Greece instead. 😉

So now, as I look back and smile at all of the things I’ve accomplished in this short time being an NHL hockey writer, it’s surprising to me that most people won’t even be able to accomplish  in their entire career what I’ve done since 2007.

The reason why I did anything and everything that I could in the NHL…it was because I didn’t know how much time I would have left in this world.  I was busy making dreams come true in the most amazing way because my health has been faced with so much crap these past few years.  Being told the cancer had returned was enough to scare the bejesus out of me.

This will be my last time covering the NHL playoffs.  My time this season has been devied up between the Devils and the Rangers.  Last year, I started off my hockey season with the Boston Bruins…and they won the Stanley Cup.

While I could say I started my season with the New York Rangers in Europe…I’m going to have to say instead that you’ll have to toss a coin with this one…I also started my season with the New Jersey Devils at the exact same time.  They’re both in the playoffs…one of them is bound to make it.  But which?

That’s how I’m hoping this season will end…in June.  I always said that I’ll retire from writing about NHL hockey when the Devils win the Cup and I get to cover it through to the end…maybe this is the year…considering I announced in July this was my final season.

As for the future, I think you can tell which direction I’m going.  More lifestyle stuff.  More travel.  More hockey abroad.  After all, I may have designed this path to cover hockey overseas because of this little thing called a lockout…maybe I’ll be covering the Devils and Rangers in EUROPE…but without the logo on the front of their jersey.

I have also been getting questions this season about why I haven’t covered hockey as much as I used to.  Well, I was in Europe/Africa at the start.  I was sick when I got back.

Then in January, I got hit really hard and then had to go 80% liquids for months.  This season I’ve had to really rest a lot.  Work has been escalating at the office, and since they pay the bills, they get my time.  This season may have been the worst healthwise than any other season.  {And I had surgery during my rookie year!  I’d take that pain post-op over the pain I’ve felt this year…any day.}

Throughout this season I’ve had to ask myself if I was making the right decision.  I had to ask all the way down to that last game on Saturday…and I knew I had to start the process of saying goodbye.  There are things that have happened since my July announcement that have reminded me all throughout this season why it was the correct decision.

I’m not leaving hockey…I’ll be sitting downstairs next season watching the Devils and the Rangers…being a fan again.  I’ll be running around the world, watching and learning about hockey from other parts of the world.  Who knows, I may come back talking about how we can evolve this game of hockey…how we can expand…and help it to survive as we deal with the economic issues that faces not just America, but the world.  You have to think above and beyond just that fan atmosphere…you have to always think about how we can make this game better.

I always pictured myself as moving into working in hockey permanently when I hit 40.  That’s in less than 5 years.  During those 5 years, I have other dreams I want to make come true before I dedicate myself fully to making that decision.

I believe it was Glen Sather that said to someone that in order for you to take the job as GM, you have to work the trenches…that includes scouting players.  You never know, the NHL teams may take my new stories from overseas and use them as part of their scouting reports…and that’s probably what these players overseas are hoping for…that I’ll somehow take notice of them and next thing they know…they’ll be playing in the NHL.

But until I hit 40, there are other dreams I’ve got to make come true.  There are seeds I need to sow in foreign countries, new homes to be built, new stories to collect, new worlds to photograph, and new people to meet.  I’m setting off to change the world around me…that is the dream…and that’s bigger than this hockey dream that came true.

One thing I’ve learned from this hockey adventure is that dreams come true in the most amazing ways when you are on your path in life.  I can recognize when a path is coming to an end and it’s time to start a new one.  That’s what this whole season has been about…the path coming to an end and a new one forming before me.

This adventure has been amazing…BUT I have other dreams that need to come true…that’s why I’m saying goodbye.  I won’t cry, but I’ll smile at all that I’ve accomplished in these past few years.

My Little Black Bag

8 April 2012

Not too long ago, I wrote a piece about a new members only site called Little Black Bag. For $49.95 a month, you get to choose one item from their collection. After you checkout, they reveal two other items in your cart that you won’t know what it is until after you’re done with checkout.

This is where the fun begins…over the next seven days you get to trade what’s in your cart for something else that others have. People will make offers on the items you have in your cart…and you can make offers on what others have.

For me, the trading part has been the best part of the whole Little Black Bag experience. Last month, I was able to score two handbags and a Steve Madden bracelet.

I’m a stickler about quality, so when I traded some jewelry for an R&Em canvas tote, I was hoping I wasn’t getting anything that would get a thumbs down. Well, my hopes were all good because these items were of superior quality…all the way down to the leather bag I picked out at the start.

This has been a bit of a godsend for me because I buy 2-4 bags every month. Little Black Bag actually allows me to budget at $49.95 for 2-3 bags…instead of paying the $300+ I pay every month (depending on what designer I add to the closet). They have a lot of different designers to choose from.

This month, I have a BCBG Max Azria ribbon watch (a gift for a friend) and a Matt and Nat wallet on its way. I was shocked that someone offered up the wallet to me for a necklace I didn’t even like!

As far as the retail total in this month’s finds, retail came to $170.  Not bad for 2 faves that I only paid $49.95 for.

So ladies, if you’re like me and need to budget yourself when it comes to your fashion fetishes, this may be the best site for you. They not only have purses and wallets, but they also have jewelry, makeup, home items, and other fashion accessories.

Depending on what you find, you could end up with a box of goodies worth well over $150 that you only paid $49.95 for. Keep in mind, there’s no way that you’ll end up with a box of stuff you didn’t even want. Trade, trade, trade is the answer. You’ll always find someone who’ll want your mystery items and trade it to you for something you’ll like.

You are not always locked in to spend $49.95 every month. You also have the option of skipping the month. Since you have until the 5th to pick your item, if you don’t see anything you like at that time, you can always skip the month and wait until you see something you like (they have new inventory all of the time)…or just try again the next month (or skip). It’s up to you.

Oh, and when you invite your friends to join, you’ll also receive an extra item for each one that joins.

Trust me, you have to try it to enjoy it. It’s the trading part that makes Little Black Bag so much more fun.

I Have a Dream

6 April 2012

If you’re a hockey person, you’ve probably heard or have been following the Newark Mayor Cory Booker vs. the New Jersey Devils drama that’s been going on in the press since the Arbitrators dished out their ruling on Tuesday.

I’ve been following this mess for a few years now.  I’ve even talked about it here on this site.  What I saw come out of the ruling was an answer to all of the questions that were lingering between Newark and the Devils arena.  It was a solution.

There were no winners/losers…unless you go to the press and start acting like a sore loser…which was exactly what Booker did.  As I read through his timeline, I noticed before the arbitration ruling, his Twitter account was very inspirational…and then he started to vent about the Devils’ owner.  He went so low as to call the owner names.

After I read what he said, I couldn’t help but think…WOW.  That was dumb.  Don’t run for mayor again…you would just be embarrassing yourself.  Let me explain why.

When I was 16 years old, I went to meet my first congressman.  I sat in the town hall meeting with about 50 other people from my hometown.  There was one constituent that didn’t like that this congressman voted for a bill that was good for gay rights (this was the early 90s).  The guy started calling the congressman a fag, homosexual, gay…blah blah blah… He did it for nearly half an hour.

At one point the congressman looked right at me, the youngest person in the room, and you could tell that he thought it was wrong that someone took in to no consideration that there was a kid in the room.  This guy had to be censored.  He tried to not let his anger get the better of him…and then he couldn’t keep it under control anymore.  He turned towards the jerk and the worst obscenities I’ve ever heard come out of a congressman’s mouth came barreling out.

My eyes widened…he had just cost himself the next election.

That congressman later apologized to me for what happened after the meeting.  He said he shouldn’t have let that man get to him like that.  He was nice enough to offer me a summer internship at his offices in Washington if I was going to be in DC before college began, just to help me get into politics from the get-go.

But even I knew…he had cost himself the next election because of his outburst.

Back then, that congressman had every right to tell that guy to shut the f*ck up.  Today, Mayor Booker has no right to call names.  Why?  Well, if you’ve been following this case between Newark and the Devils, you’ll know that the Devils were not willing to pay rent for so long as a) the building construction issues were not fixed and b) the parking situation was not resolved.

They had a fair argument.  The Housing Authority didn’t like their response, so they took them to Court.  The Court then referred them to seek arbitration.  What the arbitrators came back with was exactly what needed to happen in order for the Devils to pay rent…the parking situation was resolved.

But after all was said and done, the City of Newark ended up owing the Devils money…and that’s where the tirade comes barreling in from Mayor Booker.  He says they will fight it.

In all honesty, it would be cheaper to just fork over the money than to keep this in litigation.  For so long as it remains in litigation, no rent has to be paid, because it’s still in Court.  That, my dear voters, would make it CORY BOOKER’S FAULT for failing to collect rent now that the issues have been resolved.  Instead, he’d rather cost the city more money by keeping it in litigation, not to mention that they still won’t be able to collect the rent in the meantime.

Also, of note, you need to know that there are two sides of this story.  Booker’s failure to present all of the facts to the citizens of Newark should make you all mad.  Why?  Because he’s telling half truths…which turn into lies.

The media has been presenting this story with the facts and evidence which all seem to support the Devils, and then Booker twists the truth (i.e. he ends up telling a lie).

For instance, the Devils were able to finally laugh at Booker this week when an email surfaced in the press that the Mayor was looking for tickets to the Springsteen concert at Prudential Center.  After all that’s happened this week, the Devils arena denied his request.

The email states that the tickets were for his family…he would pay for the tickets to the sold-out event.

Here’s the text from NJ.com:

In the e-mail, a staffer for the mayor’s “Booker Team” wrote that Booker “would like to attend the Bruce Springsteen concert with a group of his family. I completely understand this is on high demand and probably sold out. Do you know if there is at least 4 tickets? Originally he asked for 10, if they are available which I doubt it, please let me know if you can get us those tickets for him. I will get his credit card as soon as you let me know how many are available.”

The article goes on to get Booker’s response:

Booker also noted that despite putting up the bulk of the money to build the arena, the city has no seats for big events.

“Usually when the government bodies put in a large amount of money, the officials have some tickets for community use,” Booker said, adding that the tickets were not for his family. “This is something that Jeff never allowed for.”

I hope the Mayor knows what a KICKBACK is.  Kickbacks are illegal and have warranted criminal investigations by State Attorney General offices…which means that politician would never see another election or public office ever again.

If Vanderbeek said NO to these kickbacks…seems like he’s a little more ethical than a mayor who thinks that it’s due to them because the city put up funding to help build the arena.  Any politician that thinks that is CORRUPT.

When I interned with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC, one of my captains ended up teaching one of my classes at my university.  The one thing he drilled into my head, because he knew I worked with his officers on the street…you cannot take kickbacks.  Even if someone offers you a free meal just because you are a public/government official, you cannot take the free meal.  You have to pay for it.  It is unethical to take that free meal because you are a public/government official.  It’s considered a bribe…punishable by the internal affairs department.  It could cost you your job.

If there was anything I learned in his class…that was the most important item of all.  Why?  Because that meant that whatever cop I was riding around town with in his sector…he knew that I would re-emphasize this point to every single officer under his command.

With Mayor Booker’s philosophy on what is owed to the City of Newark as far as ‘tickets’ go…and how he thinks it’s perfectly normal…I now question what other kickbacks he’s taking.  In other words, this is worthy of an investigation by the Attorney General’s office.

Funny thing…when you spew all these lies, anger and hate into the universe…it’s bound to come right back at you…especially if the universe thinks you’re wrong.  I think the mayor is wrong in what he’s doing.  To me, the arbitrators provided the right solution for all parties.  It’s not a matter of winning or losing…it’s about resolution.  The arbitrators resolved the conflict so that payments between the two parties could begin.

Since this is Friday and I like to talk about spirituality, this is where I’m going with all of this…

As voters we need to look at this in a certain way.  Look at our country and what is happening.  We need ethical leaders that are smart enough to know what we need to do in order for this country to steer clear of the greatest depression the world has ever seen.  We need sound leaders that don’t back budgets where they split spending in half and then send 95% of that spending to military and social security while the rest of America has to fend for the 5% (like schools, prisons, police, USDA, EPA, etc.).  We’re not in a world war.  There is no reason why the military and social security should outweigh the needs of America now.  Actually, our military leaders have offered plenty of examples of how we can cut the military budget since we are no longer at war.  In the past, each time we’ve pulled out of war, the military budget has received a 20%+ cut…not increased spending.

If a politician wants to come up with or back crackpot legislation to dish out to us until 2050 that supports this kind of mandate…they should not be re-elected.  Education for our children will always weigh more than our military.  The needs of America will far outweigh our military…we are not at war with any country.  There is no need to waste 95% of our tax dollars on the military.

America would not be able to survive 38 years of this.  We need smarter politicians that can start the change we need to see in this world.  I’m talking about POSITIVE change…not the change that will starve us until 2050.  I’m talking about a positive change that will do good in America.

Politicians that have proven in their 2-6 years of tenure that they cannot get the job done…give someone else the chance to move their cities, states and country in the right direction and will produce positive change for the people they represent.

In the Indiana State Senate, they taught me that it isn’t about politics at the end of the day.  It’s about the people you represent.  It’s good to have different parties representing different groups in politics.  When it’s time to come to the table and create laws and change for the people…it’s not about the lobbyists…it’s about the people they are representing. It’s about taking into account everyone’s concerns about any given subject and working together to come up with a resolution that will benefit all parties.  You have to give a little in order to gain a lot.

We can fight the corruption by saying no to it right from the start.  You can’t vote someone in that has proven that they are corrupt or tell lies.  You have to vote for the guy that will do change the way it needs to be done.  We need people that are good of heart and soul and will do the right thing.  Just because someone spouts inspirational stuff on Twitter all of the time, it doesn’t mean they embrace those ideologies.

You can tell if they are or not by the way they act.  If they are not the change within, they are not the change their constituents seek.

I know that the Mayor follows me on Twitter.  I’ve never followed him because some people can see into the core of others and see the truth that lies behind the shell.  I always thought he was full of crap.  This week, he’s proven my intuitive judgment correct about him.  He’s more sinner than he is saint.  His actions this week have proven that to everyone.  Just look at all of the lies and half truths he’s told.  Look at how he thinks it’s okay to take kickbacks because it comes along with the territory.

We don’t need an America like this anymore.  We need one that has become more evolved.  If we wallow in this crap that goes along with politics…our country will fail.  We will see the greatest depression this world has ever seen.

We need innovative thinkers, not politicians.  We need people with good hearts and good missions in mind.  We need negotiators that listen to all sides and come up with the best solution for all.  We need financial wizards that are brave enough to say…NO, you can’t spend our money on this crap anymore.  We need people that will change America and put us in line for a better tomorrow.

We also need stricter enforcement against politicians that lie and take kickbacks.  In other words, you do it once…you’re gone.

Sound like a fantasy world to challenge our country to create a change that is better for all of us?

Tell that to Martin Luther King, Jr.  He had a dream once…a dream that came true.  Even in times when that dream seemed like nothing but a dream…45 years later, America elected their first black president.

But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.

We cannot walk alone.

And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.

We cannot turn back.

***

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of “interposition” and “nullification” — one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; “and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:

My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride,

From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only that:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

King presented that speech back on August 28, 1963.

It is one of the most important speeches in our great American history.  Even to this day, when you think of the state America is in as we try to conquer the issues presented to us today, that speech still rings true…even in the Booker vs Devils fight.  King’s words of wisdom…they’re not just words for a dream…they are words for practice.  We must practice what he preached to us that day.

With the state of of our economy…all any of us really wants to say is “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

Do the right thing.  We can change the world.

Why Pay For Something You Can Get for Free?

3 April 2012

If you’re in NYC, you’ll find a lot of free things happening around the City.  Luckily, not everything is limited to just NYC today.

1.  FREE CONE DAY!  It’s FREE CONE DAY at Ben & Jerry’s all across the US today.  Stop into your local ice cream shop between 12PM and 8PM today to get your free ice cream cone.  Mmmmm.

2.  BBC America Is Giving Away FREE LUNCHES.  From 12PM-2PM in Times Square and Madison Square Park, BBC America is giving away free lunches in celebration of the launch of their new show: No Kitchen Required.  You can find the details on how to get a food ticket HERE.

3.  FREE GUGGENHEIM.  Every Saturday from 5:45PM-7:45PM it’s a pay what you can afford admission at the Guggenheim.  Give a dollar or two…doesn’t matter.  It’s just give what you can donate.

4.  FREE MOMA.  Every Friday from 4PM-8PM it’s free admission at the MOMA.  Talk about saving $20 and getting a little bit of culture.

See a FREE movie.  In NYC, every Saturday you can head to the Sony Wonder Labs to see a free movie.  Mind you, the senior citizens go and they like the volume turned up during the movie.  You’ll have to reserve a spot HERE.  Also, for the readers all across America, you can also score free screening passes at Cinemit.com and Gofobo.com.  I’ve been able to score a lot of free movie passes from both.  Gofobo has been sending me a lot of passes as of late, so it’s best to sign up for both sites (FREE).  Also, if you do get a screening pass…show up 45 minutes to an hour before the film to make sure you get in.

6. Find out from Time Out.  Every city has their own Time Out magazine.  In Time Out, you’ll find a very, very, very long list of free things to do in the city.  I used Time Out London as a go to guide on what to do for free the last time I was in London.

In NYC, especially in the summer months, I read the Free Things to Do Today to find out where I can eat for less than a dollar (or FREE), then I’ll bring the dinner to a free outdoor performance of a play, musical, concert or movie.  You get a lot of culture that way and you’re able to explore the city and go to places you’ve never been to before.

7.  Disney Movie Rewards.  For parents and Disney fans alike…join the Disney Movie Rewards Club and earn points towards travel, Disney items, movies, etc.  It’s FREE to sign-up.  You can collect points each month through emailed newsletters, Twitter, Facebook…or just by buying Disney movies or going to Disney movies.  I’ve donated a lot of gifts to kids through their charity program.  I’ve also received a lot of CDs and free Snapfish photos.  Right now, I’m just saving points for the kids come Christmastime to make sure I can donate plenty of gifts to the Toys for Tots program…and maybe even score a free DVD here and there for myself.

And every now and again…Disney likes to give out free movie premiere tickets.  When Sorceror’s Apprentice came out…they had a big party…and I got invited.  Not so often you get the luxury of sitting backstage to watch a concert, see the stars of the movie, and get to see the movie.  Disney takes care of their fans.

8. Target FREE.  Target has done something wonderful for the community…everywhere across America, you’ll find Target Free days at museums, zoos and performance venues.  Check your local venues to see when Target Free days are.  For instance, Target Free Thursdays take place at the Lincoln Center.  Target Free Saturdays take place on the First Saturday of the month at the Brooklyn Museum.  It’s a great way to do some family activities for FREE.

****

So who says we should spend money when we don’t have to?  It’s more fun when it’s free.  Trust me…I do this free stuff all of the time.

Today’s Inspiration: Mother Teresa

30 March 2012

After reading this wisdom from Mother Teresa, it reminded me that usually, a person would have this kind of wisdom when they are old.  With age comes wisdom.

The irony is…sometimes I feel like an 80 year old woman with the way my body is breaking down and half the stuff I write about and tell people all of the time.  If anyone could sum it all up…these 9 little pieces of wisdom would define life entirely.

I want to focus on that last piece.  “In the final analysis, it is between you and God: It Was Never Between You And Them Anyway.”  This is something I have been saying again and again on this site.  Life isn’t about everyone else in the end.  Life is about your soul.  YOU have to answer to it.

I always like to point out things to people.  For instance, when I see people practicing racial discrimination, I want to say they are actually the ones practicing hate.  I see it a lot, but mainly from a black person.  I hear them talking about how they were discriminated against by a white person.  I usually stand there thinking, “No, you were not discriminated against.  The thought never even passed that person’s mind.”

I hear them go on and on about how they were racially discriminated against…I mean…I follow those people around after the fact just to listen to them going off about white people.  And then I’ll do something in their haste…I’ll perform an act of kindness in order to get them to stop.

Whether it’s opening the door for them, or making a whole bunch of people stop so I can help an elderly lady in their group, or picking something up that they dropped, or just kindly smiling to them…I do something to change their way of thinking.  Because truthfully, it wasn’t the black person that was discriminated against…it was the white person.

Sometimes you have to show kindness…and really go out of your way to do it…just to prove a point without saying it.  I stuck around one group of ladies, repeating one act of kindness after another as they went down the street going off about how they were discriminated against.

After some time, the mood changed when the women realized that they were acting inappropriately.  After all, this white woman kept doing all of these kind things for them while they went off about ‘white’ people.

I stuck around them doing these things so that they would change their minds about white people.  You see, hate is taught.  Love is also taught.  If you want the hate to stop, you have to practice LOVE.

I also like to point out to people at times…if God was walking on earth…what would happen if the one time he encountered you on this planet, this is how you acted?  He saw you preaching hate.  He heard you talk about racial discrimination like you were the victim, when he watched YOU victimize someone else saying that was what they were doing to you.  It was a lie.  God saw it.  He saw YOU performing Hate.  He saw YOU telling Lies.

That is what God saw.

You know how first impressions will always define you?  What if God based his judgment on you based on that one moment he witnessed?  What if in that one moment, he was following you around to try and change the way you thought about what just happened?  What if he tried to push love your way and do kind things to make you think differently?  What if he spent those moments trying to change you into a better person?  Would you accept it or brush it off like it was an insignificant moment/an insignificant person…when it was really designed to teach you a bigger lesson about life?

God has his messengers on this earth.  They are his eyes and ears all across humanity.  Those messengers let God shine through them.  They act according to how God wants them to act in that very moment.

There are times that people recognize God working in mysterious ways.  Other times, people just brush them to the side as if they were nobody…no one of importance.  They take for granted God’s gifts being offered to them to change the way they live.

In the end…it wasn’t about what everyone else did to you.  It’s about what you did.  You answer for everything that you did.

If God saw you practicing hate, when he is love…how do you answer for this sin?

If God saw you telling lies, when he is the truth…how do you answer for this sin?

If God sees you breaking his commandments, when he put them into place for a reason…how do you answer for these sins?

You can’t escape from any act you put forth into this world.  You answer to it in this realm, and also in judgment.  You should always be mindful of every single thing that you do, because you will always have to answer to it.

So instead of doing bad, do good.  It’s easier to answer to all of the good you did than it is to answer to all of the bad that you did.

Here’s another food for thought…when you do good, you remain happy.  When you do bad, you not only hurt others, you hurt yourself.  Why would you want to hurt anyone?  Make effort to do good at all times.  You’ll find that the rewards of goodness are much better than being rewarded with bad things.

Some people call it karma.  Others…the law of the universe.  Do good at all times…you’ll be rewarded deeply with good things.  Do bad at all times…you’ll be rewarded deeply with bad things.

After all, you have to keep in mind…God wants only good people in heaven.  Funny thing about that…even the Holy Bible talks about how little that number is on who’s getting into heaven.  It’s like buying a Mega Millions lottery ticket.  Your chances of getting one of those spots…1 in (how many billions of people)???

Luckily, he speaks of a new heaven on earth.  Unfortunately, lots of people get tossed into the pit {Read your Revelations!}.  So…keep in mind that if you want a spot, religion doesn’t get you there…it’s your soul.  Keep your soul filled with good and all of the attributes of God’s gifts he’s given to all of us, and cleanse it of ever doing bad…and you may just find the golden ticket.

Mirror Mirror

30 March 2012

Last night, I got to get a sneak peek at the new Relativity Media film “Mirror Mirror” starring Julia Roberts.  It was such a cute event with little kids running about, little girls dressed as princesses and prizes galore for the little ones.

While I could critique the film and blah, blah, blah…I’m not going to.  Instead…I’m going to share with you some inspiring looks from Snow White (or the Queen).  The theme throughout was fantasy, vibrant colors, and nature.  You, too, could take a little hint from Snow White (or her wicked stepmother) and weave your own spring fantasy wardrobe look.

{BLUE=Snow White; Red=Queen}

1. ATOS Lombardini, $190. (Only size 6 available)

2. Liu Jo, $268. (Only Size 6 available)

3. Yigal Azrouel, $440. (Only available in size 6)

4. European Culture cape in gray, $118. Also available in black. (Cape is only available in Small).

For the more budget conscious and bigger than a size 6…don’t worry…I’ve got you covered!

1. From .Tessa, $35. (Available in XS & M…but it’s a cape and us bigger ladies could manage the Medium).

2. A Saks Fashion Fix (must be a member to buy at the price listed). From T-Bags, $72.

3. Another Saks Fashion Fix. Catherine Malandrino, $173.

4. Another Saks Fashion Fix. Wren, $144.

5. From Rue La La’s “Now Playing: Iconic Style from the Silver Screen” sale. Laundry, $79.90.

6. Also from Rue La La…”Now & Forever Classic Silhouettes” sale. Ali Ro, $159.90.

7. From Rue La La’s “Every Woman Should Have…”, Taryn Rose “Bennett” Patent Flat, $149.90.

8. From Rue La La’s “On a Light Note” sale: Shae Blazing Yellow Open Front Cardigan, $49.90.

9.  Betsey Johnson leggings, $15 at the Modnique.com “Betsey Johnson” sale.

10.  Also from the Modnique.com Betsey Johnson Sale, Metallic Dress, $49.

As for me…if I could choose just one item that would make me feel every bit the fairy tale princess…it would be this dress from the Marchesa Spring 2012 line.

Color Me Spring!

29 March 2012

After my earlier post on my bag lusts, I thought I’d take a stroll through Yoox.com to see what else they had…oh…the spring colors from one designer to the next…how could I not share it with you???

For Fantasy Wardrobe readers…the key to any outfit is to find your signature piece.  My signature pieces are always in the form of accessories…baubles, purses and coats.

Here are a few bags that will be gracing my purse closet very soon!  This is how I’m coloring my spring wardrobe!

1. Philosophy di A.F., $65.  This bag comes in a couple of different sizes, colors and patterns.  All are between $65-$69.

2.  The Feel Good Bag.  M Missoni for OrphanAid Africa.  Part of the proceeds of this bag go to OrphanAid.  $75. {This is a great price for M Missoni!  Even better that part of the proceeds go to help orphans in Africa. :)}

3. Philosophy di A.F., $105.  This comes in similar colors and patterns (blue for $98 & purple for $105).

4. Just Cavalli tote, $108.  I have a similar bag with gold accents (instead of blue) and it’s about 3x this size.  It also came with a price tag 3x the cost of this one ($495)…so to see this one in my favorite eggshell blue…means I may get this one to add to my collection.

5. Versace Jeans Couture, $138.

6. Diane von Furstenberg, $165. {$140 until 3/30}  I love the way this color just POPS!

7. Christian Lacroix, $348. {$295 until 3/30}

8. Missoni, $350.

9. Balenciaga, $448.

10. Dolce & Gabbana, $530.
