Bedroom Remodel Take Two

7 August 2012

You know how you make all these plans for what to do over the weekend and then on Friday you feel that bit of a sore throat that turns into a sleepfest weekend?  Well…that was me last weekend.  Hello, bronchitis!  I was only awake long enough to meet with the Craigslist people who came to take the garment rack and elliptical trainer out of my apartment.

That now means I have more room to maneuver around the bedroom.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to put together the last unit with drawers or start sanding and painting the bureau with the new colors that came in from Martha Stewart’s line of paints.

So while I finish battling out this bronchial infection with soups and liquids, I can start planning for the next phase…the issues I see cropping up post-organization.

DILEMMA: SHOES!!!!

I may or may not be starting a new obsession with Bally shoes.  I just got my first pair of Bally heels for $100 at The Outnet clearance.  I put them on and they were more comfortable than my Adidas flip flops I wear around the house (you know…the ones swimmers wear).  Imagine…heels…more comfortable than your FLIP FLOPS!

I’ve had to lock up my credit cards for fear that I might be starting a new collection of shoes.  I want to get the organization under wraps first before buying another pair of Bally shoes.

A search on Pinterest today gave me a few ideas…

While this would be perfect for any fashionista’s fantasy shoe closet:

It’s so not happening.  I don’t have the space for a unit like that.  {I wish I did.}

While this might be more reasonable on space…

Apartments are usually smaller, so we need to work within the confines of a smaller space since the purse collection is taking up the majority of the space.

I can see this working within the confines of limited space…

This would be more ideal:

Or even this…

But honestly…I don’t like to look at my shoe collection, unless I’m displaying them like art…

I like that idea, as well as the slender, tall cabinet big enough for 5 rows of shoes (20 pairs)…the hunt would be on to find a similar cabinet.  {Anyone have any ideas?}

But what about those shoes you can’t display like your tennis shoes?  Or shoes that just won’t hang up like flats?

I came across an ottoman that you could store shoes in…

But that doesn’t solve my solution, because this ottoman is way too bulky and would take up space.

So I started to think…how would I like to display my shoes, even the ones not worth displaying?  Here’s the solution I came up with:

I decided to go with the display cabinet (pending if I can find one) to display my couture shoes and use the matching shoe storage with shoe tags on the boxes for everything else.  I can store the bigger boots under the dresser and bed, and keep the majority of the shoes neatly organized as such in the closet.

[8/8/12 update: I never told you guys/gals what my colors were.  Well…before I start taking photos, I’m going to let you in on a secret color (besides white)…it’s Tiffany blue.  Today, I found Tiffany blue cardstock from Paper & More to wrap around the shoeboxes I already have (instead of spending money on new boxes).  I found a template for the shoe tags that I’ll be attaching the photos to and I’ll be using the white ribbon from all of my Tiffany & Co. purchases to tie the tags onto the boxes.  The card stock for 50 sheets of 11×17 paper cost me about $26 after shipping.  That should be more than enough to cover all of the boxes and create the tags.  Tiffany blue always makes us ladies happy.  That’s why it’s an accent color in the room!]

As far as a place to just kick shoes off and organize them nicely?

How about this????

I always have a pile of flats lying around the floor when I get home.  This would solve that dilemma by throwing them (neatly) into a basket under the console table.  I already have baskets there filled with magazines.  I can always move the magazines into holders and move them into the office/library.

[8/8/12 Update: If you have a lot of flats, the best way to store them is to put one shoe inside of the other and then place them in the basket.  That keeps the flats together.  I actually displayed my flats standing them up inside the basket.  It makes it easier to find when you’re on the go.  Also, keep the tennis shoes in the back of the basket.  The way I displayed the shoes, the colorful flats were placed in the front.  That’s all you can see.  The basic flats and the tennis shoes went to the back of the basket.  You can’t even see them!]

DILEMMA: LAUNDRY

This is a pretty bad situation right now.  I haven’t done laundry since June…which kind of surprises me that I have so many pairs of underwear.  Even more shocking is that I haven’t even put a dent on my wardrobe.  There’s still an overstuffed closet filled with clothing in there.

But I do see the pile of clothes piling up that need to be laundered.  Once that is out of the way, here comes the next dilemma…how to store laundry between the monthly washes.  Yes…I do laundry ONCE a month.

While the double hamper is ideal…

It may not fit.  Also, I could run across the issue of the color not matching.

So the next best bet?  This is the answer…

I can change the rectangular hamper to fit sideways or against the wall.  The circular hamper, allows for a different look to the room instead of going along with all of the rectangular furniture already in the room.  The circular hamper can hold the whites, while the bigger hamper can fit the darks.

I also have to instill a new rule…laundry is done when the hampers fill up.

So that’s the next phase.  Now to find that cabinet!  For some reason I bet Ikea has something like it.

Friday Loves

3 August 2012

What’s captured my eye this week?  Well, a few things worth sharing in today’s Friday Loves.

1. TOTAL RECALL.  Ok…the hype is…it will suck because a) it’s a remake of a classic movie loved by many, and b) Colin Farrell is in it.

The TRUTH is a) the storyline is way better than the first movie…i.e. it’s a different story with some similar elements (like the name and the program REKALL), but this time there’s no Mars stuff.

As far as b) goes…Colin was in the movie, but the ladies, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel dominated the movie.  This movie belonged to the ladies.  Kate kicked ass better than she ever has before in any flick (that means that Underworld has now been outclassed in Kate awesomeness by Total Recall).

Seriously, I love Kate, but the fact that she owned this flick…that is worth watching in every single way possible.

I didn’t know what to make of this film when I agreed to go.  I have to say…No Regrets.  This baby is making it to my film collection when it hits DVD.

Special thanks to Sony for the movie passes!

From NY Daily News

2. RICK NASH.  Ok…I’m no longer a hockey writer, so I can now say this.  Want to know what the girls and I are talking about?  The awesomeness of soon to be New Yorker, Rick Nash.  Oh, us Rangers fans New Yorkers have a gem on our hands!

Word going around out of Columbus, Ohio today is that Mr. Nash took out an ad in the Columbus Dispatch (see page C5) to thank the fans.  Mr. Nash is on his way to the New York Rangers after agreeing to a trade to our beautiful city.  Of course, this makes us all happy that Mr. Nash is coming to New York…sad for Blue Jackets fans…but awesome for New York.

So you know there’s a story behind why the girls and I are talking about Mr. Nash, right?

The first time I ever met Rick was at Starbucks.  It was actually kind of weird.

I was with a friend on our road trip to Raleigh, North Carolina to see the Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Carolina Hurricanes.  We were in the same hotel as CBJ, so we ended up seeing them out and about in the little shopping area in front of the hotel.

I didn’t know Rick Nash before then.  We were in line to get coffee, when I took a photo of my coffee and Marty the Duck to share with followers.  While I was tweeting the pic, ends up that Rick was ‘pretending’ to make his coffee right next to me.  He was reading my phone over my shoulder.  Yes, he noticed Marty the Duck.  I was, of course, wearing a NJ Devils tank top.

When I turned around to grab a straw, I caught Rick reading over my shoulder.  He jumped back, tried to pretend he was adding stuff to his drink.  I just paused and looked at him like…ok…

I grabbed my straw and my friend and I headed out the door.  When we got outside she told me who that was and that he was like super famous or something.

Ok.

So at the game that night, we were sitting behind the bench when Mr. Nash comes skating by during warm-ups.  He actually smiled and waved at both of us separately.  He said “Thank You for coming.”

I was wearing a Devils tank earlier, she was wearing a Leafs jersey.  Go figure…we weren’t there for CBJ…or were we?

Either way, this guy is a gem.  Further proof of it can be seen on page C5 of the Columbus Dispatch.

3.  Like I Don’t Have Enough Plates To Begin With.  So I’ve been enjoying the ombre look.  I bought two pairs of $99 Italian leather flats in ombre at Anthropologie.  When I ran across two women this week wearing dresses or shirts in ombre, I couldn’t help but sigh and think, “Oh, how lovely and beautiful!”

Well, this morning, I was flipping through Country Living (one of my favorite magazines) and saw that they did a special on watercolors…which aren’t too far off from the ombre look.  They listed a set of Kate Spade dishes with their MUST BUY watercolor looks.

I’m a sucker for the color blue, especially when teal is added to the mix.

These dishes retail at $80 for this set of 4 pieces (as pictured) {that means $320 for 4 place settings}.  You can find them HERE.

4. My favorite discount store is closing its doors forever.  This really sucks.  I just discovered Daffy’s and now they’re retiring and closing their doors forever.  While the discounts will be tremendous in the next month…where am I going to buy my Valentino for $50 going forward?  {Why yes…I did stock up and buy out the remaining Valentino inventory at the Times Square store…that I could find.}

It’s very sad to see another major discount retailer succumb to this economy.

While sad, Daffy’s loyalists…try not to cry while buying up the major discounts over the next month.  I’ll do my best to not ball my eyes out either.

5.  Best Photos of July.  Ah…National Geographic. How I worship thee.  Thou art the gods of photography.

National Geographic just released their best photos of July.  Just amazing how a brief second can create such amazing imagery.

Check out their best of July photos HERE.  They simply call it “Pictures We Love: Best of July.”

When I grow up…I want to take photos like these.  They’re all so amazing the way they capture a second in life.

Bedroom Remodel Part One

30 July 2012

Since I got back from Italy, all I can think about is how things are changing…FOR THE BETTER.  The focus is on me and my life and making today better than it was yesterday.  That means establishing new rules to fix everything in life that I let slide that happens to be hurting me.

The focus this weekend has been on my bedroom.

Last week, I talked about the new closet organizers I purchased to organize my accessories. {See… I Did What?}  I spent this weekend watching a little bit of the Olympics and Pretty Little Liars while I put these items together.

For some odd reason, I thought I ordered the organizers with doors.  Silly me!  I should know that I would want to be able to see my purse collection instead of hide them behind closed doors!  So unlike what I wrote last week, I actually purchased two of the open shelving in the top right hand corner, and two of the drawers on the bottom right corner.

Don’t let the picture fool you.  These are taller and wider than I thought they would be.  But the good news is that they’re much slimmer, which allows for wider foot traffic between the furniture and the bed.

For those looking to order similar organizers, I highly recommend purchasing Martha Stewart’s organization solutions.  Her instructions are the best I’ve ever come across in putting together furniture.  Home Decorator’s instructions had me sitting there going…’what in the hell are you trying to tell me to do?’

If I wasn’t a little seasoned in putting together furniture, I would have probably pulled my hair out.  After I deciphered what was going on, it was pretty simple to put everything together.  I think what took longer was trying to decipher the foreign language, bad pictures, bad examples and trying to decipher which half of the instructions were left out.  {I’m not joking when I say they didn’t put in half of the instructions.}

I was able to put together 4 out of the 5 pieces I bought from Home Decorator’s Collection over the weekend.  I had to stop after that because the boxes and packaging piled up to the point that the trash had to go before opening up one more box.

Here’s how this new organization project went down…

Let the Organization Begin!

I started to organize everything neatly onto the shelves.  I decided to keep one open faced cabinet with my couture designer purse collection and let the other one house my non-couture collection that I can’t give up because I love them so much.

This was also a good way to start going through the masses of bags that have recently multiplied and made babies.  It was also a good way to decide what has to go and what I’m keeping.

I started off by taking one bag after another from their current hiding place and putting the designer bags onto the shelves.  I separated the tote bags that can lie flat and began to lie one on top of the other, while I put the more structured bags on the top two shelves.

My first couture bag…the Burberry…was placed at the top, where I could see it, followed by my Burberry clutch in Tiffany blue that I picked up at the last NHL Awards in Las Vegas.  I then put my prized Rebecca Minkoff satchel along with all of my black designer bags together on the middle shelf.

On the bottom shelf, I placed all of the bags that could lay flat next to the Fendi messenger tote I picked up for around $50 at Bonanza.com.  Many of the bags I could fold over three times, so I stuffed the handles in between the folds.

After I put all of  the couture bags on the shelves, I took a step back and remarked to myself that I couldn’t believe how many black bags I owned…which led to…wow…I can’t believe I own so many couture bags.  {Pat on the back!}

I organized the non-couture cabinet the same way, only the snakeskin group served as the black bag organization frenzy that was on the couture side.  The more structured bags hit the top shelf, while all of the flat totes went on the bottom.

What determined if I kept the bag on the non-couture side?  It either had to lay flat or look pretty on the shelf.  If it didn’t fit either description, it hit the DONATE bin.

A New Home

There was a Tommy Hilfiger straw bag I loved when I bought it but have to find a new use for because it was pilling.  It actually started pilling after day one, which is a shame because it was such a nice bag.

I plan on upcycling the bag and using it as a storage solution in another room.  Like people use baskets to store stuff away, a big tote bag can serve as storage in another room.  Just make sure the colors match.

I bought a cute yellow (fake) leather tote from Forever 21 a few months back.  It matched the pillows in my living room, so after I carried the bag around for a week, I put it next to the couch.  It’s now the place I dump magazines into when I walk into the apartment.

I have another large octopus tote that I picked up in North Carolina (yes, the bag that the Columbus Blue Jackets have tweeted about in the past…What is it about stalkerish hockey players?  They follow you around while you shop…tweet what you purchase…tweet what you talk about to your friends…).  I hide books in this infamous tote bag when the shelves are overflowing with literature.  Not all books have to be displayed (just make sure you keep a list of your titles…I keep mine in an Excel spreadsheet on my computer along with the location).

What to Donate When You Can’t Decide

Ah, the issues of what to part with when you have a COLLECTION.  It’s probably the hardest thing to do…decide what you are willing to part with when every single piece you purchased has some sort of history to it [see Burberry bags…octopus bag…etc.]

It’s difficult parting with pieces you think you love.  Then there’s making the decision of what you want to carry with you as you move forward in life.  One of the first conditions on whether I kept a bag or not had more to do with if it looked pretty on the shelf or not.  Guess what bags got tossed first?  THE NEON BAGS!  They never really look good on shelves…which should say a lot about them not looking good on a person.

What followed next were the bags that I did not feel comfortable carrying.  Those bags that hurt while carrying…GOODBYE!  There were even a few bags that I had to do a few triple takes to try and decide if I could use them as a storage solution or change the bag into a pillow.  The design had to be my kind of ‘home decor’ worthy or it went in the DONATE pile.

The most important part of all of this decision making was divorcing my ‘feelings’ towards these items.  In order to make decisive solutions regarding my clutter, I had to get rid of any emotions that I could attach to my collection.  That’s the reason why ‘clutter’ continues…we become emotionally involved in it, not realizing that what we claim we actually love is hurting us by making us feel overwhelmed with ‘too much’ stuff that we love.  A cluttered home = bad feelings in your own home.  An organized, clutter free home = simplicity and happiness.

Another ’emotion’ trigger I used in deciding what was getting donated was how I felt about the bag…that is, as far as negative emotions were concerned.  Did it hurt me when I carried it?  If it did…it went bye-bye.  The point of this was to surround myself in the things that made me happy.  If a strong emotion of distaste occurred…it meant I really had no reason to keep it.

A Loving Look at the Inventory

After all was said and done, I took one look at my couture collection and was actually surprised at how many couture bags I actually owned.  I’ll be the first to admit that I believe that I don’t own that many couture bags.  I buy them and then they get mixed up in the non-couture collection.  I forget I even own anything couture.

Truthfully, I was a bit shocked to see the entire collection all in one spot.  It was no longer mixed in with the non-designer group, so I was able to really take a look at my couture collection.

The couture collection was almost as equally big as the non-designer group.  I had to pat myself on the back because it made me realize how amazing my fantasy wardrobe collection had become.

Long gone are the days that I dreamed of owning a Fendi, a Burberry, a Valentino or any of those bags sitting on those shelves.  It’s a dream I made come true…all out and in the open for me to see and stop hiding away underneath the rest of the junk.

Moving Forward Towards Phase Two

I not only separated up the bags according to couture vs. non-couture, but I also applied the same methodology to my scarf collection.  One shelf had all of my designer scarves filled with Valentino, Tiffany & Co. and Salvatore Ferragamo (and one day Hermes), the other had all of my non-designer scarves that have kept me warm throughout the years.

Some of the scarves I had to force myself to give up and put in either the donate bin or the upcycle bin for the quilt I’ll be piecing together.  The rule was, “Can I see myself EVER wearing this?”  I had a year to wear it.  If I hadn’t worn it in that time frame, it was in one of the two bins.

Some people like to apply the two year rule to clothing…accessories can go into a one year rule, because you can use them more frequently than clothing.

Jewelry sorting I’m going to save for another day.

As for the dresser that used to house the accessories, almost everything was taken out of it so it could be moved into the kitchen where it will be serving a new function…it will serve as my pantry for now until I’m ready to work on the kitchen remodel (that includes a new storage solution system and getting rid of 3 pieces of temporary furniture for 1 new upgrade piece).

Now, I have to sort through more clothes that will be donated or upcycled.  So far more things are being donated than upcycled.  That, of course, is a good sign that the clutter is being brought under control.

The only problem right now…I can’t get to my closet until the trash men pick up all of these boxes!

After they pick them up, I can start on the final cabinet and finish moving things around into their new homes.  I also need to find a new double hamper to match this grouping.

Hopefully, the new paint, etc. from Home Depot will arrive before next weekend so I can also start and finish the dresser update.

Next week, I hope to donate all of the clutter items that made the Donate bin, and get rid of the elliptical trainer & the extra metal frame wardrobe I had to buy to give me more closet space.  One thing is for sure…if it’s a workout machine and I  have to put it together…chances of me ever using it is about 1 time before I think I’m going to kill myself on it.  I have no qualms about handing it off to someone else to take a stab at putting it together correctly.

I also have no room for it.  I’ll keep the yoga mat. 🙂  It’s easier to pack up and move to a new home.

After all of this is done, it comes down to the finishing touches of reassembling artwork and the new little things I’ve found to enhance the look of the room.

This little upgrade is a little on the expensive side, but it’s worth the way I feel about this new change in my life.  It only has me thinking about how I’m preparing for my new home.

Friday Loves Free Stuff

27 July 2012

Since I announced yesterday that I’m preparing to buy a new house, that means changing the way I do a lot of things, as well as taking advantage of what’s out there.  So today’s Friday Loves all deal with how to live life without spending money on the stuff you can get for free.

1.  Free Music.  For those with an Android phone and Google Play account, take advantage of downloading the free tunes available every week.  They make it very easy to find.  Free tunes are listed on the first page of the Music page.  You can download oldies but goodies, indie music and even brand new music to promote a new album (like this week’s new Motley Crue album).

I download whatever free tune is listed.  It helps me to explore new music and to re-visit the old stuff.  It’s one of those, “Hey, I didn’t know Steve Miller Band was the original guy to record “Fly Like An Eagle.””  (Made popular by Seal.)

When I worked in music, I had free music at my disposal all of the time.  My car (aka my office) was where I listened to every CD ever given to me by anyone that offered it to me as I drove from one place to the next to meet with band after band.  These days, a lot of indie artists are behind in getting their music onto Android phones.  But Android phones…they’re not behind in getting you free music.

Another good place to pick up free music is your local library.  They have plenty of music available to checkout.  From records to CDs…they’ll have them.  One of the best collections of music I’ve found are in both the Bloomington Libraries in Indiana (home of Indiana University) and the local library in downtown Indianapolis.

Summer is also a great time to get out and experience free music in your hometowns.  From music festivals to outdoor campgrounds to your local parks, you’ll find music cropping up all over America FOR FREE as part of many summer activities going on in your hometowns.

In New York City, symphony orchestras play in Central Park (as well as other parts of the NYC area).  Free music concerts are put on by TV shows (like Today Show, etc.).  Take advantage of these summer concerts.  Who knows, you might catch some of the biggest names in the industry…if you’re willing to wake up at dawn to get in line (in NYC).

For everyone else, check your local newspapers (especially the free papers) for events in your area or your nearest metropolitan area.  Many free papers will list free events on their websites.  For major metro areas across the world, check your local Time Out (especially online).  They’re a great source to find things to do in your city.

Want to know my trick to getting in to see bands play at clubs?  Become good friends with the band.  They’ll put you on their VIP list every single time you go to see them play.

2.  Free Books.  You don’t always have to have a Kindle or Nook to partake in Free Book Fridays.  Remember the library?  Pay them a visit.

I’ve been trying to not press ADD TO CART on the latest Carlos Ruiz Zafon novel or on the latest installment in the Discovery of Witches chronicles.  So I went online to my local library’s interlibrary loan system and ordered both books.  The library will email me when they come in.  Cost to me = NOTHING.

Yes, when all else fails in the Nook department, I still get the book at the library to avoid paying for the book (unless I’m traveling and need books to read).

For the tech elite snobs…I’m sure you are aware of the whole free Fridays at Barnes & Noble.  It should have been the first thing you learned about when you got your Nook.

You can get plenty of free books on either devices.  At Amazon, just search for “Free Kindle Books.”  A huge list comes up.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a Kindle device, but have an android device.  Guess what?  You can download free Kindle books onto your android by downloading the Kindle app (free) onto your android.  So now you don’t have to feel like you’re shut out from the Kindle world just because you decided to go Nook or iPad.  Even if you don’t have a tablet but have an android phone, you can still get free books on your phone.  You can download the free Kindle application directly from Google Play.

Or if you don’t have the technology…just keep going to the library.

Believe it or not, the library also allows you to download books to your computer and transfer the book to your android device.  Keep in mind though that just like libraries…there is a loaning period for digital books.

Also, for those who want to start a new way of trading books for free, my office always shares books they’ve read by dropping them off in a central location (like the pantry area).  People take whatever they want, bring in whatever they don’t want.

You can also start this tradition with your friends…start a book swap. This works for the physical books, as well as the ones on devices.  It’s easy to swap and share books with each other.

3. Free Movies.  I usually go to the movies for free.  I don’t normally pay unless it’s at my local theater across the street from me ($5 first showing) and I’m just paying for the air conditioning for a few hours during the summer months.

Being in New York, I tend to get invitations to movie premieres rather frequently, especially at the start of summer when the biggest blockbusters are due out.

Other times, I use a site called CINEMIT.  It’s free to join Cinemit.  I’ve seen several different movies thanks to their contests.  They’re not just based in New York City.  You’ll find their listings (even though there are fewer listings outside of major metro areas) in cities all over the US.

Another great place to check is gofobo.com.  Registering for the site is free.  They’ll show you when new movies hit your area that are up for a free pre-screening.  Sometimes they’ll even email you a special code to use for films that hit your area.

Sometimes doing a little research online you’ll find movie clubs that offer pre-screenings in your neck of the woods.  It also helps if you live close to a city.  When I was in DC, I joined a film club.  Granted, it cost money to do so.  These days, you don’t have to pay to join movie clubs to go to pre-screenings.

As for DVDs…check your local library.  I find it funny that the library usually gets new releases before Netflix does.  I’m not sure why I spend $16.99 a month to use the Netflix service to borrow 1 DVD at a time, stream and use up data on my plan to watch a movie when I can just get the DVD for free at the library.

Oh, and might I add that it’s summer.  All throughout your local cities you’ll find free outdoor movies.  Bring a blanket and a picnic, because your local parks and recreation have a movie night for you.  I remember watching Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on one of these movie nights as well as A Streetcar Named Desire.  Those are two movies I will never forget.  Why?  Because I saw them outside under the stars.  All it takes is a little research on your local parks and recreation websites.

For those in NYC, you can even watch free movies at Sony Wonder Technology Lab every Saturday (by reservation only).  I will warn you that the senior citizens know about free Saturday movie screenings.  They are hard of hearing and always ask for the sound to be turned up.  It was so loud, I had to put earphones in to block out most of the sound.

4.  FREE STUFF.  For those looking for just about anything and everything under the moon…checking local advertisements (especially online) as well as Craiglist could net you some free stuff.  From firewood to free furniture, you’ll be amazed at what you can find.  I personally like the curb alerts where people post up something they just put out onto the curb…or they spotted on the curb.  Helps if you have a vehicle to pick this stuff up.

For those looking at local ads, it usually helps to know what day a local free paper posts their classifieds online.  Check their ads on that date.  That means you’ll be able to get to the freebie before it hits their papers.

Another great site to find free stuff in your area is The Freecycle Network.  You can join a network of people in your local community that’s giving away stuff.  You usually just have to pick it up (or send someone to pick it up for you…aka movers).  It’s also a great way for you to post up stuff that you want to get rid of…or if you’re looking for something, you can post that up as well.  It’s a great way to recycle STUFF with your local community.

For those who live near universities, when students move out at the end of the spring semester, that’s a great time to take a look around the college rental neighborhoods.  You’ll find everything under the moon left out on the curb…from TVs to furniture to computers…you name it.  If a college student uses it, you’ll find it on the curb.

5.  Free Things To Do.  There’s always plenty of things to do for free no matter where you live.  When I first moved to NYC, I felt like I was spending way too much money to do stuff.  It took some time and research to discover that there are ways to enjoy this city for free.  It was finding out how to do things for free that helped me map out how I could travel on the cheap.

For those wanting to visit museums, museums across America are free on certain days (even all over the world, you’ll find designated days when museums are free).  Thanks to Target, they have sponsored free days at the museums, zoos, etc.  Check your local venue to find out what days are free and go.  This works best for families too.  Go when it’s free.

You can find free theatrical productions, usually from a local community group, during the summers.  Churches also host free theatrical productions.  All it takes is a little research and word of mouth.  I’ve seen plenty of Shakespeare and Sophocles thanks to free theatre productions in parks all over NYC.

If you take a look at your local parks and recreations websites, you’ll find a score of things to do for free.  From classes, to cheap gym memberships, to free events, etc.  They are a wealth of information and are available to you thanks to your taxpayer dollars.  Why not use what you paid for already?

There’s so much you can do for free that will help you feel not only more cultured…but happier.  Get outdoors.  Take a walk.  Go fishing (note, you may have to pay for an inexpensive fishing license).  Hang out with the kids in a local park.  Play some ball with friends and family.  Go hiking on one of the thousands of paths throughout America.  Head to the beach.  Volunteer in your community.  Join a book club.  Lay out in your backyard and gaze at the stars (not everyone in the world gets the luxury of seeing stars at night thanks to light pollution).

Just get out and enjoy LIFE.  You don’t have to pay to smell the flowers.   You just have to remember to stop and smell the flowers.  Take advantage of all of the free things in life.

I Did WHAT?

26 July 2012

It’s no secret that the main reason why I retired from hockey writing has to do with something called wanting to start a family.  I’m 36 years old and it’s time to start placing myself in that direction.  Since I returned from Italy, I’ve done so many things that are different than what a single, successful woman that makes too much money should do with her life.

When I got back from Italy, I started doing something that broke one of my codes of conduct.  I got a credit card.  Alright…maybe I got a few credit cards.

I was watching Young, Fabulous and Broke before I left for Italy.  Suze Orman talked about credit and how all credit cards combined equals your available credit.  It’s not based on one card to the next…it’s based on your combined credit.  If you have $20,000 between all cards, and you use less than 30% of it, that’s a gauge for banks to see if you use credit properly and what kind of loan (as well as interest rate) they will give to you when you apply for a…HOME LOAN.

Jeepers.  I said HOME LOAN.  That means I’m setting my life up to purchase my first home.

I always told myself that I would get a home when I bought a car.  For some strange reason, I got the GM Card so that I could start saving 5% towards a new car.  Eek…I must be insane.

That wasn’t certifiably insane yet…it just made sense.  But when I applied for The Home Depot card, it officially became the “This is Your New Life” decision.  I really am doing this.

Well…I’m not done yet.

I bought a sewing machine, my first vacuum cleaner and a new wardrobe unit.  At Home Depot, I ordered paint and other things to create new DIY projects.

The sewing machine, in and of itself, is a little shocking.  Sure, I took a Home Ec class back in high school…I’m not sure how I plan on remembering how to do this stuff, but it would be a cheaper way to a) recycle clothing items I loved, but for some reason can’t wear them anymore (i.e. stains, too big, or I just don’t like to wear it, etc.), b) I can turn the items into pillows and quilts so I can change the look of my home easily without spending $100+ for new pillows every single time (even more if I have to buy new slipcovers).

I started looking up DIY quilting on Pinterest.  My mom used to quilt.  It always looked simple.  One of the blankets I keep is actually one I’ve had since I was 8 years old.  Unlike my brother, I’ve taken very good care of that blanket.  My mom has tried to steal it back from me over the years because it’s in great shape and also the warmest and softest blanket EVER.

Most adults that keep their childhood blankets actually have a blanket in shambles.  Mine…perfect condition.  Even the cat loves to sleep on it (and under it) in the winter months.  It’s just that soft and warm.

So why go out and buy new blankets when some of the best blankets that children will love for the rest of their lives are the ones that a loved one makes themselves?

Not to be all colonial…but this modern girl found a few patterns that would make a quilt a little more up to date in our day and age.  Here are a few ‘new’ ways to quilt:

{You can find tutorials and lots of inspiration like those seen in the above pics from Piece N Quilt.}

As for another project in the making…I saw this picture and knew instantly that this is something that can easily be made…

A vintage chair like the one above is easy to find at yard sales and thrift stores.  In order to get the color…I’ve already done a post on how to create a new chair just by using furniture paint.  As for the pillow…it’s much easier than you can imagine.  All it takes is a printer printing out a similar pattern and then putting it onto iron-on transfer paper (there are also DIY involving wax paper projects).  Sew the pillow together and voila…you have your own Paris pillow at a fraction of what it would cost to buy it in a store (saves time too because you would have to search everywhere for it…GOOD LUCK!).

There are so many things that a sewing machine can create for the home…not to mention all of the NHL t-shirts being turned into tote bags.  Hell, with my passion for bags, I may start making my own.

As a person that is looking into buying their first home…a sewing machine can save so much money on home decor.

As for the new vacuum…I actually got a special vacuum called a pet vacuum.  For pet owners…this is a must have investment.  I tested this product last night and it’s a pretty powerful device.  With just one once over on the furniture, it picked up ALL OF THE HAIR!  With most hand vacs, you’re lucky to get all of the hair up after standing over the same spot for 5 minutes.  In one sweep, you pick up all of the hair with this pet vac.

My cat has super fine hair (not like regular cats) so it’s hard to pick up the hair.  A pet vacuum answers all of those issues.  Gotta say…I felt so grown up after I bought my first vacuum…and I’m 36.

As far as my bedroom makeover…I bought a new wardrobe unit to house all of my accessories.

From Home Decorators Collection.

I didn’t get this exact unit, but I bought two of the drawers and two with the doors.  I decided to lay them out side by side (instead of standing them on top of each other like in the photo).  That way I can put my TV on top of it, as well as books and other decorative pieces (like the new new white buddha head I picked up at Daffy’s).

The clutter that is my jewelry that’s currently on top of my dresser will stay in their decorative bowls but will be hidden away in the drawers to eliminate all of the clutter.  Clutches, scarves, and flat tote bags will all go into the drawers.  The bulkier bags will go behind the doors (thus eliminating all of the clutter and making effective storage for my entire collection).

I even picked up a little bench with storage underneath to put in the corner.  I’m sure the cat will take it over.

As for that pink chair?  I plan on scouring the local yard sales for one to put in as a finishing touch to the bedroom makeover.  It just seems absolutely perfect for me and would be worth the adventure in finding, painting and creating the new pillow.  Who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky and stumble upon one being thrown out as TRASH.  It happens.

One of the reasons why I bought the paint?  I am going to be updating my dresser to match the new white furniture (this is the first time I’ll be changing everything to match each other).  I saw this chest at Home Decorator’s that I loved:

It reminded me of the TV show Once Upon a Time.  I love the Evil Queen’s decor in her office, especially the walls which look like a forest.

Personally, I love the whole ‘birds’ on tree limbs look.  I’ll be creating a similar look that’s a cross between the chest above and Regina’s office.

And yes…there is a stencil I can make to create this look and spray paint it onto the dresser.

I haven’t decided if I’ll be painting the knobs on the dresser or picking up some new ones at Anthropologie.  We’ll see as the project goes forward.

Even though I’m updating pieces in my apartment, I’m keeping in mind the look I want to go into my new home.  Over the course of the next year, I’ll be buying a new car and a new home as I move forward in life.  This, in itself, is an adventure.  Scary, fun and exciting…that’s the way all journeys feel.

Next search on Pinterest…how to crochet and knit (something to do in the winter months).

Feeling Green

26 July 2012

I’m a little in love with the latest green in fashion.  I loved it so much, I actually ordered a couple of items from ASOS last week and absolutely fell in love with them.  Check out what I bought…

Ming Green Vila Linen Blend Belted Dress, $16.57.

Jade London Rebel Classic Pointed Toe Ballerina, $33.14

I also picked up a bag to go with this ensemble (that I wear with black pants).  It’s a super cute tote for only $16.57.

Pieces Noella Shopper.

I like the yellow and purple with the neutral tone.  It goes perfectly with the ensemble so I don’t come across as wearing too much green.

I paired this look with a green lace bangle I picked up at Mango in Milan, Italy for about $5 and this bauble from Bauble Bar:

Currently only comes in turquoise, $38.

My total purchase for ASOS came to $66.28.  Not bad for a dress, shoes and tote.  My favorite of the buy?  I love them all.

A Rough Awakening

23 July 2012

I haven’t been updating this site with the new entries from Italy as often as I’d like to considering there are 14 entries and photos to match.  My excuse is that I’m a little shaken up by the course of events over these past few weeks.  It’s that instinctual feeling that you know something very bad is about to happen that it shakes your internal instincts to the core.  You don’t know where it’s coming from or when it will end…all I know is that my instincts still say that whatever is going on is not finished yet.

As you can see from the Day One entry, Death was fucking with me before I started my trek across Italy.  Now, I see why.  It is so hard to see how America is being hit after the massacre in Aurora, Colorado last week.

After being prodded by my co-workers to buy an antenna for my TV (so I don’t have to get cable to watch regular TV because all I really want to watch is just a few of the regular FREE channels), I finally broke down and got one on Thursday night.  In a way, I wish I hadn’t.

Sitting down to have breakfast watching the “Today Show” for the first time in almost a decade, I watched the news unfold as they reported the massacre in Aurora, Colorado, the worst mass shooting in the history of America.  One of those victims was one of the hockey community’s own, Jessica Redfield.

With 12 confirmed deaths ranging from a 6 year old girl (whose mother is in critical condition and has no idea that her daughter is dead) to a 51 year old father, who was at the show with his two teenage daughters (both made it out unharmed)…we are left with a huge sadness and emptiness in our hearts because of this lunatic.  He didn’t just do this to Aurora, Colorado…he did this to humanity.

As I walked through Target on Saturday with one Batman title after another sitting on the DVD shelves, I just felt a stab of pain each time I saw the DVDs.  This isn’t fair to Batman…but it just brings back horrible feelings on what has happened to us all.

Evil has touched humanity in the fiercest way possible.  His act was an act of terrorism in itself…it invoked terror and fear into the hearts of many…and claimed the lives of 12 people, wounding over 50+ others.  People died shielding their loved ones from this lunatic.  One man, Alex Sullivan, was there to celebrate his birthday, saying it would be the best one ever…only to die less than an hour later…making it his final birthday celebration.  He also never made it to his one year wedding anniversary that was supposed to take place on Sunday.

This all brings to head the realization of the seconds we have in life and how everything can change in the blink of an eye.

Even before my trip to Italy, I felt Death following me around.  He finally stopped pushing me off of trains and making random objects fall on me (from out of nowhere) trying to break my bones just to get my attention.  He’s never been this violent with me before when he was trying to warn me of things to come.  All he kept telling me during this trip until now was…make amends.  You don’t want to carry any of this anger with you into the next lifetime.  Make amends NOW.

An old gypsy woman gave me charms in Sorrento, Italy because she said Death was following me (like I didn’t know that already).  She kept praying and telling Saint Peter to watch over me.

Lately, I’ve been becoming so absent-minded that I’ve lost my phone, paid for something and just completely left the store without it (on more than one occasion).  I’ve been so rattled over these last few weeks leading up to the Aurora, Colorado shootings that I couldn’t tell you which way was left and which way was right.  This is what happens every single time Death is about to do something BIG.

I’ve been watching the signs every which way I turn and I can’t help but think that I’m not out of the clear with Death yet.  It was as if he was saying that Aurora was the first of things to come.

I’ve seen photos of the big storm that hit NYC last week and couldn’t help but notice the concentration right in Midtown.  When I first saw the lightning outside of the office, I purposely moved away from all metal objects.  My boss thought it was strange, but I just had this look on my face like Death was coming.

If Death’s coming for me…I have no idea.  If he’s doing this because I’m about to witness something horrific…I also have no idea.  It all works the same.  I just saw it as a sign.  Something Wicked This Way Comes.

In a way, I wish I had never gone to Vatican City while I was in Italy.

I was following a priest inside of St. Peter’s, I wanted to see how far I could go into the depths of Vatican City before being caught when the Door of Death stopped me in my tracks.  Considering what had happened prior to reaching the Vatican (being hit by a train and a random object falling on my hand), I was so freaked out.  I had no idea this door was there.  I had no idea that I had entered into Death’s realm.  I turned and walked straight for the doorway out of St. Peter’s, completely freaked out.  Don’t think I didn’t hear Death whispering to me all the way to the front door.

He was trying to teach me a lesson about life.  When I got to the front doors, he did something to me that changed the course of events.

I literally saw a vision of the man I’ve been so mad at over the last eight years.  The man saw me from the outside gates of St. Peter’s.  It was like he couldn’t believe his eyes.  He knew me.  We looked at each other like how in the hell does this happen?  We haven’t seen each other in eight years and we run into each other in Vatican City?  A whole world away from Indiana!

This was the same man that broke my heart so badly that I moved to New York City in order to heal.

I stood at the doorway to St. Peter’s realizing that something strange was going on.  Why weren’t any tourists going out of these doors?  I looked to my left and saw that tourists were only going in and out of one set of doors.  Here I was on the other side looking out the door at this man, and then realizing something was amiss.

I was so scared to go out that door and face the man that I’ve been mad at for over eight years because he broke my heart.  I could either snub him and pretend I never saw him in Vatican City or I could suck it up and face my fears.

So I walked out that door.  The sunlight bathed my face.  The man looked at me, but then was called away by another woman.  He turned and I realized it wasn’t him at all.

I stood in front of the door thinking…what the hell was that?  I could have sworn that was the Rockstar.  I looked back at the doorway and saw Death standing there.  He said, “Now you understand.”

This is one of those lessons that exists on several levels.  There’s the whole facing my own fear…aka my anger.  There’s the ‘fate’ card.  There’s the ‘forgiveness’ card and there’s the whole ‘saving my own soul’ card.  In other words, Death was telling me to forgive that guy who broke my heart before it’s too late.

Forgiveness means telling him the truth about why I left.  He doesn’t know why I left.  I put up that wall and he could never see in.  Five years after I left he asked for that wall to be brought down in his first single off of his first album since I had left.

I tried to talk to him after I heard the song, but I just got so frustrated with him that I said, “Forget it!”  He can believe whatever the hell he wants to believe and just left it at that.

In Italy, I realized how much I missed him.

As I rode by Mount Vesuvius on the train, I started to realize the world I had created without him might have been a mistake.

The choices we make out of anger may seem like the right choice at the time, but it may not be the correct choice after all.  I chose to live in New York, become a hockey writer, get a job paying an exorbitant amount of money to give me a comfortable life…sure I was happy…but I was also empty.

I remember about 5 years ago, I was sitting at this bar with my friends when a guy came over with his friends to talk to us.  As I was chatting with this guy, he looked at me funny and out of the blue says, “You’ve already met him.”

“Excuse me?” I responded.

“You’ve already met the one and for some strange reason things didn’t work out between you two.”  He went on to tell me that no matter how hard we tried to date and be with other people, it would never work out.  We had to work things out with each other because we belonged together.

I hadn’t thought of that conversation in five years.  But as I stood on that train watching these teenage boys playing soccer (who were also trying to see if I would play along with them), I kept thinking about the life I let pass me by.  I thought of that interview he did on television a couple of years after I left.  They asked him why he had never married or had kids.  I watched him get choked up, trying to hold back the tears responding, “Life happened.”

I remember him telling one of our mutual friends that he wanted to have a baby…”If it meant she would stay.”

I thought about those things as the train carried me to Sorrento.  I watched families board the train and leave the train.

I sat at the Trevi Fountain for an hour and a half a couple of days before looking up at Poseidon staring back at me as I made my wish.  I made that wish for a whole hour and a half on my birthday.    I was making a wish for something I’ve always wanted, but never had.

The reason why I wished for an hour and a half…it was because I was afraid to make that wish.  Just like the next day, I was afraid to step forward and change my life by forgiving the guy that had broken my heart…but I did it.

Why?  Because I felt like that 15 year old girl standing up on the high dive trying to get her lifeguard license and thinking…just get it over with and do it.

I don’t know how I dove off that high dive again and again and again.  My chest hurt like a son of a bitch each time, but I did it just to get it over with…no matter how many times I stood at the edge, scared out of my mind.  I didn’t become a lifeguard, because I wasn’t a strong enough swimmer.  But at least I tried and failed instead of always wondering if I could be a lifeguard.  It was only after I failed that I learned that I didn’t want to waste my summers lifeguarding after all when I could be out spending the summers with my friends having fun.

After feeling my skin start to crisp in the sun in front of Poseidon, I decided to quit being an idiot and just get up and throw the penny in over my shoulder.  I watched countless tourists doing it.  Why couldn’t I do such a simple act like throw a penny into the fountain?

I don’t think I was scared to throw the penny in…I was afraid of the wish and it coming true.  By throwing the penny in, I was changing my universe to put myself in line with that wish.

With all new beginnings there is a death of one life and the beginning of another.  With each new beginning there is always that fear of change and changing everything you have grown so accustomed to.  While it can be exciting, it can also be devastating…because you are letting go of something you once loved.

As I traveled around Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, I really started to miss my best friend that I left so many years ago.  I realized Death was following me and was putting these thoughts into my mind.  I realized that I walked away from marriage and a family with someone I knew I was going to love for the rest of my life because he broke my heart.  He didn’t leave me.  He was following me to Los Angeles because that’s where I was going to be and that’s where he wanted to start that life with me.

I walked away from it all because of the lie and the hidden truths.  As much as I braced myself for what was to come, nothing could have ever prepared me for how destroyed I was inside that night he told me he chose to love someone else.

I left because I was broken.  There was nothing he could have said or done to change that.  I had to piece myself back together again.

It’s taken eight years in a city I’ve grown very comfortable with for me to realize that I wanted that life with him more than anything.  Because I was so angry and pissed off at him…I walked away from the one wish I wanted more than anything…to marry the person I love and to have a family with him.

It was in Italy that I learned that life isn’t meant to go on journey after journey alone.  It was meant to be shared with someone.  As I sat in Positano, I kept thinking about how much he’d love this place.  I sat on the great big porch next to the beach, eating my spaghetti with meatballs thinking of how I could never be one of those people out on the beach again.  I could picture him running around on the beach, enjoying the sun and the surf, while I had to remain confined to the shade, out of the sun.  I felt like the sick child watching all of the kids having fun outside while I was stuck inside and would never be able to join them.

You start to realize your own mortality at this point.  You see that world you should have had with someone as it passes you by as you sit ‘solo’ in a restaurant in Italy while everyone else around you is with someone…and you’re the only person sitting there alone.

You watch the people around you on the boat…and realize you are the only person alone.

You hand your passport to the guy at US Customs and he looks at the line behind you and asks you why you didn’t go to Italy with your girlfriends.  Why did you go by yourself on vacation?  He’s not asking from the Homeland Security point of view.  He’s asking with sadness in his heart.  Why are you alone?

It just hits that nail a little harder into your own coffin in life.  This is the world you created.  Somehow, it doesn’t feel as great as it did before…being alone.

You don’t see your adventures in life as being free and independent anymore.  You start to see your life as a half empty page…it’s missing something.  It’s missing the real story on why you were put here on earth.

It’s amazing what life you create out of anger.  Instead of pursuing a life with someone, I chose to be alone.  I chose career and money, because he told me he chose to love someone else.  He meant he wanted both worlds.  He wanted his cake and eat it too.  That wasn’t the world I envisioned for myself.  In the end, he lost us both.

I never would have seen this trip to Italy as being the revelation of my heart and my soul.  Each trip I’ve taken these past few years have all helped me heal in some way.  I am always open to possibilities, but this trip to Italy was a swift kick in the leg (thank you, Death, for using a train to kick me in the leg as you pushed me off the train) because it forced me to look in a place inside myself I did not wish to look.  It made me look at the man I loved and forgive him.

It’s prodded me to write a 12 page letter telling him why I left and be 100% truthful about it.  It’s not meant for us to get back together, it’s meant to push me towards making amends.

Italy was Death’s way of saying how important fate is in all of this.  Fate and Death are intertwined.  You can’t go throughout your life with anger in your heart, because life can change in a brief second.

Just reading Jessica Redfield’s near death experience at the Toronto Mall and then a month and a half later, she dies in another shooting incident in a totally different country…it shows just how Fate and Death are one and the same.  They are intertwined.  That’s why they called them the Three Sisters of Fate.  The Fates can cut the golden thread of your life and it will be over in an instant.

Imagine if you never lived the life you were supposed to live.  You created a new world because you were dead set on it being better than the last one that nearly destroyed you.  Imagine making all of that happen and realizing that you made it all come true…you were happy…but you also realized that you were empty at journey’s end.  You start to think of the reason why and then Death shows you what your life could have been if you had never left the one you loved.

YOU made a mistake.  This is Death’s way of saying, “You can fix it while there’s still time.”

Oh yes, time…Death and Time are also linked to each other.  You can see it at Death’s Door in Vatican City.  He holds the sands of time in his hand.  It’s a symbolism of how life is all but sands in an hour glass.  At any moment it could run out.  What if it ran out before you did the only thing that could save your soul?

If Aurora has taught us anything, we see Death and Time interwoven together.  One minute we could be absolutely happy and content, then the next moment it could be stripped from us forever.  This is the rough awakening.  When that moment arrives, what is the first thing you wish you could have done differently?  What is the one thing that scares you to death that you wish you should have done when you meet Death at his doorstep?

That was answered for me in Italy.

Don’t waste life doing all of the wrong things…do the one thing that means everything.

The Outnet’s Big Clearance

18 July 2012
Badgley Mischka dress for $99.
Badgley Mischka dress for $99.

Fantasy Wardrobe lovers answer me this: If I bought a pair of Bally heels, 2 Salvatore Ferragamo scarves and a Jas MB oversized leather tote that would cost me what?  Almost $2,000?

How about $370?

You think I’m joking?  Well, that’s what I paid for all of those items at The Outnet’s big clearance sale.  But alas, you can only access the sale if you are a subscriber (which is free).  Then again, you should already be a subscriber so you can get in on the big anniversary sale coming up this summer.  You know…that anniversary sale I’ve talked about before where I got a $3,385 Valentino dress for $2.

In the past women have scored Christian Louboutin heels for $1, a Fendi bag for $2…you know…the big name designers.  They got those items for that low, low price based on The Outnet’s anniverary year.  This year they’ll be three years old, so that means everything will be $3 for a select group of subscribers whose names are pulled out of a hat (or however they randomly select shoppers).

So the reason why you haven’t subscribed to The Outnet is…

For those who are subscribers, you better run, not walk…dust off those credit cards you’ve been saving for a fashion emergency rainy day and use them on this sale.  This is the kind of sale that is too good to pass up.

The sale lasts for the next 5 days.  Inventory is starting to run low as word is getting out.

Oh, and any brides looking for a dress…I’m pretty sure I saw a couple of weddingish dresses for under $200.  If you shopped the site last night, you would have found a couple of couture wedding gowns around $86.  Can’t beat that.

[Note: The Outnet is Net-a-Porter’s clearance site.]

Day One: Hello Venice!

15 July 2012

Some of the best inner journeys start with the passport-stamped kind.
(Whole Living, July/August 2012)

Most of this journey across Italy was a bit of a strange tale.  Like the quote above, I didn’t realize that I was about to take an inner journey of epic proportions.

I was just newly retired from hockey writing and on my first trip post-career.  The lessons I learned throughout this entire journey were moments I never thought I would experience.  But everything was a huge wake up call in life.

This was probably the weirdest and strangest journey I have ever been on in my entire life.  This journey marked the end of one journey and the start of a new one.

What follows are my log entries that I wrote while I was in Italy.  If you follow it from start to end, you’ll not only see all of the new pieces to my photo collection, but you’ll also learn about the deeper inner journey I took.

Everything starts with Day One…before I even hopped on the plane.

It’s strange how the universe works on these adventures.  Everything conspires in the most strange and peculiar ways to show you a world you never knew existed, including the ones inside yourself.

And so the tale begins…

****************************

So before this whole Italian adventure began, I was at the office and for some ungodly reason, I dropped my grapefruit juice on the floor. I kept thinking…this is not a good sign.

Half an hour later, I was talking to my friend and out of the blue…my water spilled all over the counter. I remarked, “This is not a good sign.”

My friend responded, “Everybody gets clumsy every now and again. Even I do.”

I just looked at her and said, “I don’t. The only time I get clumsy is when Death is messing with me and someone is about to die.”

This, of course, freaked her out a little…as well as myself.

I can actually tell you the last time I got clumsy and wound up with a blueberry smoothie all over my bedroom wall…it was right before Derek Boogaard died. All of the clumsiness didn’t end until after his death. [I still swear that the glass moved…it was nowhere near me when I ran into it and splashed it all over the place.]

It’s like you know something is about to happen…and I was sick to my stomach with worry because it could happen to anyone I’ve met in this lifetime. Worst of all, this was happening a few hours before I was hopping on a plane to Italy.

It wasn’t until the defibrillator woke me from my slumber on the plane that I realized that something had gone terribly wrong. Oh, it wasn’t me that was dying.

I sat up and saw a nurse, the co-pilot and two doctors standing in the first row. I realized something was amiss. Ends up they had to shock a guy three times over the course of three hours before he showed signs that he’d make it to our first stop in Zurich. We were halfway across the Atlantic Ocean. There was no way they could divert the plane to a closer locale.

I don’t know what was wrong. I just prayed a silent prayer that he would make it.

After some time, they lifted the man up. He was practically lifeless. They placed him in a seat, wrapped a huge down comforter around him while they spoke to him about what was going to happen next.

I couldn’t even hear a thing, but I was just happy that the guy made it all the way to Zurich…alive.

So that was Death’s first official ‘brush by’…and the guy lived. So either Death took a Holiday that morning, or that wasn’t the person. Just the prelude.

Trust me…it was the prelude.

When I arrived in Venice, the luggage hadn’t hit the carousel yet, so I headed to the restroom. As I reached for the toilet paper, the metal container it was in came flying open (I didn’t even touch the thing) and almost broke my hand. It literally opened up and slammed down on my hand. Luckily, I got away with just a scratch and a lovely bruise as a welcome to Venice.

Stuff like that…it’s still Death f*cking with me. I didn’t even touch the metal container when it came flying down on my hand. This kind of random stuff only happens when Death is following me around trying to deliver some ‘warning’ news that someone I know is about to die.  [Post-Vacation Note: This really was the start of all of these weird happenings.  It gets worse as we go along.]

After collecting my bag, I quickly found the bus into Venice. It was pure luck how easy that turned out. I put my bag on the bus, helped a British couple with theirs and then hopped on the bus.

The drive in was spectacular. All of that water!

They say that the best way to see Venice is to get lost in Venice. Well, I took a wrong turn and got lost right off the bat. I asked this very handsome Italian man (that was walking down the sidewalk looking at me and smiling) if he could help me. He really put on the smile and took a look at my map and then told me where I was at that very moment was completely off the map!

Thus the story of my life!

It took him 10 minutes to explain how to get back to where I started and then where to go from there. Mind you, those bridges are a pain in the ass. You climb up the bridge (aka carrying your suitcase up a flight of steps and then down a flight of steps). I swear that suitcase got heavier every single time I had to do that…and there are a lot of bridges in Venice!

Ends up the handsome Italian’s directions were spot on and I found my hotel in no time. I was so hot and sweaty that I ended up taking a shower before changing and heading out to explore Venice.

I didn’t see any sites beyond the Grand Canale. I was hungry, it was 5PM in Venice, so I sat down in the first open restaurant I could find, Ristorante Roma. That restaurant ended up being right on the Canale. The food there was fabulous!

I started with a mixed salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Next, I had the pasta bolognese with tagliatelle noodles (not spaghetti). I have to say, the tagliatelle noodles are probably now my favorite noodles. I asked for a gelato for dessert, he brought me three scoops (lemon, strawberry and chocolate). I followed it with an Americano coffee. Oh, it was so good. I enjoyed every single bite.

Most of all, I enjoyed the atmosphere surrounding my first meal in Italy sitting along the Grand Canale, watching the boats go by and listening to the singing from one of the men on the gondola boats. His voice was so big, you could hear him all the way down the canal.

As I ate my dinner, a beautiful little bird kept me company. Since I didn’t eat the bread, I let the bird sit across from me and pick at the bread. It flew away to take a few pieces to its nest. After a few minutes, a sparrow came by to do the same thing. I couldn’t believe how brave these birds were to just sit at the same table as me and eat my bread. It just added to the wonderful ambience of Venice.

After that amazing meal, I headed out to ‘get lost’ in Venice again.

I found myself in a shop buying postcards only to see the magnificent masks she had inside. Since I didn’t want to pick up a mask and carry it around Italy for the next two weeks, I promised to come back to buy the metal mask that was shaped in a way that looks like it’s covered in lace (but it’s metal). It was so beautiful. I knew if I bought it then, it would break over the next two weeks.

The shops of Venice are filled with the most beautiful and intriguing masks you’ll ever see. Some are comedic, others are outrageous, and some are downright beautiful that you can’t help but marvel at the craftsmanship.

Even the cheap masks designed for tourists are a wonder to see…especially the way they are displayed in a sea of thousands of colorful, and all very different masks.

As I made my way over yet another bridge, my calf muscle decided to say, “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!” in the good ole’ Gandolf way. I literally stopped, hobbled over to the side of the bridge and decided to rest for a few minutes and take photographs.

I think this is where the jetlag was really setting in. I hadn’t eaten in over a day. That meal I just had was the first. I didn’t put on sunscreen when I first got lost and ended up getting sun poisoning. Throw on top of all of that a bit of dehydration and my body was begging me to just stop…go back to the hotel and sleep.

Instead, I pressed on.

After I climbed the bridge and made my way back down again, I discovered a fruit/vegetable market. It was just so beautiful…all of the colors and shapes…the smell of the basil as the beautiful and young Italian men bunched them up for sale. Yes, it was a sight to see and take in.

I stopped at one stall that had sundried tomatoes. I picked up a bag when the shopkeeper pointed to some fresh cherries. He had three different kind. He kept directing me to the most expensive ones so I asked, “What’s the difference? Can I try one?” He hesitated and finally agreed to let me try one from each batch. I ended up buying the more expensive ones…and they were delish!

I realized after the bells to close up shop started ringing…I should have bought some bananas. Of course, that wasn’t until after the other calf screamed “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!” at the next bridge. Oh boy, I was a frightful sight! I haven’t been this bad since post-surgery in 2008 when I pulled a muscle in my stomach…just because I was walking too fast. This is why the doctor keeps saying that my body still isn’t ready to workout again.

I found a statue close by and just collapsed. My body was giving out on me. I rested underneath the statue for a good half an hour as tourist after tourist took photos of the statue (and me) and the homeless guy on the other side!

I headed back to the hotel after that second beating…only to get kicked in the calf again at the next bridge. Why didn’t I think to fill a prescription for pulled muscles before I left? Those drugs would have come in nicely.

I made it back to the hotel finally, but stopped along the way to buy a new leather purse. You know…the MADE IN ITALY…leather bags. They come in so many sizes and colors that it is so hard to decide which one to buy.

I settled on an orange one that has “FLORENCE Made in Italy” imprinted on the front of the bag.

I decided that I might end up coming home with a new bag from every place I visit. I just hope there’s enough room in the suitcase.

The quality of each piece in the store was just impeccable. These are the kind of bags that will last you a lifetime…just like the Italian leather shoes. This is the kind of leather you invest in. Ironically, each bag is about 30 euros each. In America…it’s well over $100…even at Daffy’s.

After I bought my bag, I handed a gypsy woman two euros for luck and headed back down the canal to my hotel. I fell asleep right at 9:15 and woke up again at 11:30PM. I took a friggin nap! I didn’t fall back asleep until 2:30AM…and I had to be up at 7AM for my train.

Jet lag…totally not fun.

Next stop…Bologna.

[Here are the photos and new pieces to my collection from Venice.]

Friday Loves Being Home Again!

13 July 2012

I’m back in the States.  The trip will be told in the coming weeks (be prepared to read a lot…it’s currently 40+ pages and I’ve only made it to day 10 of the journey across Italy).

Now, some crazy stuff happened while I was in Italy.  When I got home, I decided I would never leave again for a summer vacay, because the cat almost died while I was away.  Apparently, there was a blackout while I was gone…which meant no A/C for the princess (she was sleeping in the bathtub to stay cool).  She drank all 7 bowls of water and ran out.  She was almost on day two of no water when I walked in to a screaming, crazy cat.

I understood immediately why she was going crazy when I walked into the apartment.  I dropped everything, and ran to the sink to get her some water.  She not only drank it too fast and threw up three times, she started bleeding the next morning…scaring the crap out of me.

NO MORE SUMMER VACATIONS FOR ME!

But don’t worry…after spending the day home with her on Wednesday, brushing her for hours upon hours on end and getting her rehydrated, she’s doing much better.  She’s back to her happy diva self again and knows she’s in 100% control of our domain.

(Guilt card is definitely in play.)

So here are the top Friday loves…being home again.

1.  I Lost My Phone in Verona, Italy.  So you’ll find out over the next few weeks what happened in my trek across Italy that was very much on the strange side…as in…Death was following me.  A gypsy woman confirmed it when she saw me and had to give me some charms to ward him off (which are now at home close to the cat).  While I was in Verona, I was so sleepy after seeing the performance of Aida at the Arena (an outdoor coliseum), I must not have put my phone back into my purse when I reached for my wallet to pay for the taxicab.

Of course, this freaked me out, because that’s my alarm clock!  That meant I would have a few sleepless nights until I got a new alarm clock/phone.  [Plus, I never do stuff like this.  I never lose anything.  That freaked me out even worse!]

Well, thanks to watching Hulu Plus, an advertisement from AT&T showcasing the new Samsung Galaxy S3 kept replaying.  I thought…what a cool phone.  I went in and got that phone the next day.

Sure, I’m upset that my BlackBerry Torch with all of those interviews I was going to type up this summer (like the Kovalchuk part 2 story) are gone forever…it was just a reminder of the world that has ended.  I’m retired.  I can no longer write those hockey stories.  (Sorry, Ilya.  That was the most important part of the story…lost in Verona, Italy…FOREVER.)

[I just love how the universe makes sure that I really should not go back on my word or even reconsider retiring from hockey writing.]

Luckily, AT&T helped me out with purchasing this phone by giving me some options like using my brother’s upgrade, and he could use my upgrade in October (which means he can get the iPhone 5 at that time).  This brought down the cost of the phone to $199.  Switching upgrades worked out perfectly since my brother is an iPhone lover and the new device won’t be out until later this year.  It gives them time to work out the bugs (as he says).

Now, what I love about this phone…it’s everything I love about the Nook Tablet in a phone.  The whole fact that the phone is an instant WiFi HotSpot is probably the only feature that is lacking in the Nook…but works perfectly while traveling or just commuting to work.  For instance, I watched “Once Upon a Time” on the way into the office.  I love that it hooks up to my Netflix and Hulu Plus accounts.

While I could read books on the Galaxy…I’ll just keep the Nook for that.  The Nook has a bigger screen.

This device has been creating quite a stir.  Even the guys at the AT&T store love it.  They gave up their iPhones and Blackberry devices for it.  For those at AT&T who don’t have the Galaxy S3, they are hoping to get it soon.  That should tell you how amazing the buzz is around this product if they’re giving up their iPhones and Blackberry devices for this device.

Apple, on the other hand, might be a little threatened by the success of the Galaxy S3.  There’s a rumor they’re releasing the iPhone 5 on 8/7 instead of October.  It’s just a rumor…but it should also tell you how amazing this new device is.

So in retirement…and my first few days back in the States I’ve discovered I’m becoming a techie…

Yeah…we’ll see how long that lasts.

2.  Young Adult Bestsellers.  So, I may be cheating a little on my New Year’s Resolution.  I just finished reading book number 34 this year.  That’s probably a record for me since we are only in July.  I’m going to share my secret…I have an addiction to young adult book series.  I plow through them in a few days because they’re filled with so much action and adventure…I just can’t put the books down.

While in Italy, I was sad to finish both the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan and the Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott.  Both authors brought their series to an end.  I was sad and almost cried because I didn’t want the adventures to end.  But the symbolism in seeing an adventure come to an end…yes, you’ll read about that symbolism in the coming weeks as I recount my adventure through Italy.

Even though I ended the journey with these characters I loved, I started a new one with Peter Pan in the “Peter and the Starcatchers” series.  A Broadway show is currently playing in NYC with huge success.  I definitely plan on seeing it soon.

I realize that even though one adventure comes to an end, no matter how much you enjoyed it and the characters in it…sometimes it can mark the beginning of a new adventure.  With Peter Pan, it is all about being forever young and never growing up.

3. PASTA!  I don’t care what the diet books say or the fact that my hips may have grown a little bit while in Italy…but I’m in love with tagliatelle noodles.

They look like fettucine noodles, but they’re actually egg noodles.

My first meal in Italy was Tagliatelle al Bolognese in Venice, while I was sitting right next to the Grand Canal.  It was the most amazing dish I had throughout all of Italy.  It was sooo good.  It was the noodles that made the difference.

While I was in Florence, I searched everywhere for a shop that sold tagliatelle noodles and finally found them.  I bought two boxes and bought another bag before I left Venice to come back home.

Last night, I made a pasta sauce and boiled up a batch of these noodles…and all I can say is that these noodles just make everything taste better.

Since tagliatelle is not easy to find in America, I found a recipe!  Actually, I bought a cookbook in Florence (in English) with the recipe for Tagliatelle al Bolognese to make at home.  It takes two hours to make the sauce, so I’m going to wait until the fall/winter to cook up a pot (it’s too hot to cook in the summer).  As far as making the noodles…I found a recipe for you to try!  Homemade Tagliatelle.

I’ve never had noodles that redefined a pasta dish, but tagliatelle did it for me.  FAN FOR LIFE!

4.  Marty’s Better.  So while I was in Vatican City, I decided to mess with a few nuns while they were praying (you’ll read about it in the travel log).  After I left the prayer room, God answered my prayer.  I’m not joking when I say it happened right after I left the prayer room.  I looked down at my phone and there was the news!  Marty Brodeur is still a Devil for two more years.  I could almost kiss a priest.  Almost…  (they creep me out…especially since I can read their sinful minds…just disgusting human beings some of them are).

Anyway, the Martin Brodeur Facebook page just linked to a really awesome shirt that I have mad lust for.  It’s a Marty’s Better t-shirt.  You’ll have to click the link to see.

That shirt is just as awesome as the new Dallas Stars jerseys featuring #68 on the front.  Jagr in the back.  [Just happy he decided to go with a team that didn’t have orange in their jerseys…bleh.]

5. A New Wardrobe.  So the great thing about going to Europe is the fact that I can bring back fashion that will not be in style until next year.

I like being ahead of the fashion curve.  After all, I like knowing I’m wearing something that other people can’t own unless they go to Italy themselves to purchase it.

While in Milan, I didn’t have time to do anything before heading to Verona, so I headed to the train station early and luckily, they had shops galore.

One store that captured my attention was Mango.  I’ve only seen a cheaper brand of Mango at JC Penneys, and all the fashionista seem to love the store, so I decided to go in.  Luckily, the store was 50-70% off.  I picked up the striped top (in the picture) a new bag and a bracelet for 29 euros.  I really couldn’t believe my luck!

While in Sorrento, I picked up a few lightweight (aka see-through) tops that can also serve as dresses (but I wouldn’t recommend wearing nothing but underwear underneath).  I wore the longer piece as a tunic because of the drastic lines and wore a pair of jersey pants and a t-shirt underneath.  I got so many compliments on it because no one has seen this kind of top here in NYC.

Jewelry…came in the form of Karl Lagerfeld.  There was a shop in Verona that gave me 50% off the two Lagerfeld necklaces I found.  They were so willing to make a deal…and everything was so beautiful in their shop (all major couture designers).

Of course, the most important finds were all about the purse purchases.  I bought a new bag in every single place I visited except for Bologna and Naples.  The most amazing find wasn’t just the 100% Italian Leather bags…it was a scarf bag I picked up in Sorrento, Italy for 6 euros.  It was the cheapest bag of the lot, as well as the cutest.  You’re not going to find that bag anywhere else in the world except in Sorrento, Italy.

In Florence, I picked up a scarf from a store right outside the Uffizi Gallery.  It is the only place in the world that you can buy this scarf because it was specifically designed and made for that store…and there’s only one store in the world.

For the Fantasy Wardrobe followers…this is actually how I create my wardrobe.  After you get past all of the basics and have added a lot of couture pieces from your favorite designers, all that’s left to do is to define your look by wearing what no one else can buy…unless they go there themselves to buy it.

I always hate when I see someone wearing something I own.  I like wearing items that no one else will have…yet, they also want it very badly.

Something to keep in mind whenever you venture away on vacation…always look for the boutique stores.  Take a look around.  You’ll always find something that is unique to that place you’re visiting and something you will love from your time being there.  Just keep in mind that whatever you buy to add to your wardrobe…it’s something that you will actually wear at home and not just on vacation.

So if you’re in Jamaica buying a sarong, make sure it’s something you won’t mind wearing at home or displaying over a table or chair when you get back home.  That’s how you determine what you’ll actually buy as far as clothes go while you’re on vacation.

Even right now, I’m wearing a top I picked up in Raleigh, North Carolina when I went with a friend to see the Columbus Blue Jackets play against the Carolina Hurricanes.  Sure, the CBJ guys like to talk about my big ass octopus bag they saw me buy…but the top I picked up during their nap…that’s the piece I love the most.  That top was a reminder of a fun trip and of a marvelous city.

So for those vacationing soon…always look for something you’re going to love owning for the rest of your life.  I said LOVE.  I LOVE all of the pieces I’ve picked up from all over the world.  Those pieces always have more meaning to me than any of the NYC finds.  It doesn’t matter if I picked it up from one of their local JC Penneys…all that matters is that I picked it up in that place while I was traveling.  It’s a great way to remember those places you visited beyond just the pictures you took, because there’s a story and an adventure behind those pieces.

Friday Loves The Summer Getaway

22 June 2012

The HEAT is definitely on in New York City, just as it is throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere right now.  While most are planning their summer vacations and getaways, especially with the Fourth of July just over a week away…I’m heading out for a very long trip around Italy.  {That means this is my last post until mid-July.}

Here are some of the things I love about the summer getaway.

Photo: Marina Oliphant

1.  A Time To Read.  One of the things I love most about traveling is that I get to catch up on some reading without distraction.  Between the empty time spent at the airport, on the airplane and trains…catching up on a few good books is essential.  My aim…to read some fabulous reads where I can’t put the book down.

While traveling in Europe last fall, the books of choice were The Help and The Paris Wife.  The only thing I wished I had done…was bring more books with me!  By the time I hit Africa, I had read both books cover to cover.  That meant I had some very boring nights after curfew hit and I was stuck in my hotel room with no TV.

As an early birthday present to myself, I decided to break out and just buy the Nook Tablet from Barnes & Noble.  I got it in May because I wanted to make sure that I downloaded everything I could possibly need or want well in advance of heading overseas.  It also gave me enough time to troubleshoot anything that could possibly go wrong prior to leaving.  {Very glad I did, because there was a reset problem…fixed in no time!}

The good thing about the Nook Tablet is that I can watch TV on Hulu Plus, movies on Netflix, play Sudoku and Scrabble games, search the internet, and have an arsenal of books at the ready to read.  Luckily, there are plenty of Free Books out there that made the first month basically pain-free on the credit card.  Every Friday, they have a Free Nook Book that you can download.  You can get the free book from their blog!

So far, I’ve read an Amish book on Free Friday that was about a female reporter who tried to educate the world on what happens to children in war torn parts of the world.  Some asshole decides to set a car on fire, load it up with a bomb, and send it sailing right towards her while she’s filming.  She ends up surviving the bombing…but needing a place to heal.  This New Yorker heads to her Amish grandmother’s home in Lancaster, PA, where she rekindles her Amish family roots and falls in love with the Amish man next door.  Did she give up her life as a war reporter to marry an Amish man?  Well, you’ll have to read about it in “A Time to Love.”

Even though I’ve loaded up on plenty of Free Friday Nook Books for the last month and a half, I decided to pick up a few others to read over the next couple of weeks.

Here’s what’s on my Italy reading list:

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.
In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson.
Birdman by Mo Hayder. {Today’s Free Friday Nook book}
The Enchantress (Nicholas Flamel series) by Michael Scott.
Billy the Kid and the Vampyres of Vegas (Nicholas Flamel series) by Michael Scott.
The Death of Joan of Arc (Nicholas Flamel series) by Michael Scott.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

The books I link to above are based mainly upon Barnes & Nobles’ recommendations.  The first two are New York Times Bestsellers.  The first one is based on a historical look at the World’s Fair in Chicago and how a serial killer was able to abduct, torture and kill women without anyone knowing about it for years.  TRUE STORY.

The second story is about America’s first Ambassador to Hitler’s Germany.  I usually don’t like reading war books or watching war movies, but I got a sample of the book and read the first 50 or so pages…have to say, I am intrigued.  This is also a TRUE STORY.

Birdman is today’s Free Friday Nook Book.  The Enchantress is great for the kids (if they’re reading the Nicholas Flamel series…Enchantress is the latest book in the series).  The Night Circus is the book I’m looking forward to reading the most.  It was front and center on BN.com today and looks like an amazing story.

Getting the Nook was probably the smartest thing for me since I go through a lot of books when I travel.  It’s lightweight and simple to pack and carry around.  It’s also the best birthday present I’ve ever given to myself…nurturing the traveler and the book lover in me.

If only Eyewitness Travel would put their guidebooks on Nook…would be so much better (that Italy guide weighs a friggin ton).

2.  Summer Whites.  Would you believe I ran around during my lunch hour looking for 2 things?  A white lightweight flyaway cardigan and my favorite white tank.

Luckily, I found everything I needed in two stores…right as the torrential downpour began in NYC.  Luckily I made it back to the office in the nick of time.

Earlier this week, I had stopped into Ann Taylor to pick up this sweater.  I bought a similar one last summer in white and it was the perfect lightweight sweater to wear with everything.  Even in the Sahara Desert, it was perfect over tanks and dresses.  But I had to retire the sweater because the usual end of the summer sweat stains just made it unsalvageable.

It is a rule…every summer YOU MUST buy new summer whites.

Unfortunately, that sweater from Ann Taylor is nowhere to be found in the NYC area.  So I settled for this sweater for $19.99 (in stores).  It wasn’t exactly what I was looking for but it would do for the moment.

I decided to take my chances at Ann Taylor Loft today for a flyaway sweater in white…and luckily I found one on sale today for $29.70.  It wasn’t in my normal size, so I tried on a smaller size…lo and behold…I found out I lost weight!   {Eat pizza for two weeks straight…don’t ask me how this works.}

As mad as I was at the Gap earlier this year for sacrificing quality, I went in anyway hoping that my Favorite tank would be back to its old self again.  Luckily, it was.  I stocked up on a couple of white tanks, a navy blue tank, and a navy blue/white striped tank.  They were on sale for $10.  At the end of the summer they usually hit between $3-$6, but I needed them now.

Even though I missed out on getting the right cardigan at Ann Taylor the first time around, I did find this shirt for $29.99 (in stores).

This find made the whole trip worthwhile.  It’s a beautiful color…and one of the colors of choice I’m wearing in Italy.

So make sure to stock up on your summer whites.  After all, they are the most beautiful whites of the year…crisp and clean.

3. The Carry-All Tote.  So I may be just a little bit in love with my new Rebecca Minkoff tote that I picked up during her sale (after the Devils had that horrible loss).

I found that the answer to styling my summer wardrobe with this tote is to wear bright colors.  Teal green, orange, purple…(my main colors for Italy) all match this bag.  I don’t have to wear just a solid.  I can wear prints and the bag looks even more fabulous with what I’m wearing.

When traveling I highly recommend a nice big tote to carry around while traveling or hitting the beach.  I always keep my camera and wallet towards the front corner of the bag so it’s closer to me and easier to pull out.  I basically leave the guidebooks, etc. in the back…just in case some pickpocket comes along and tries to take something from it.  The most important items are closer to me and my body.

Totes are also great to throw purchases into without having 50 different shopping bags to carry.  For me, after seeing how plastic bags do not break down and can litter the Saharan Desert…I don’t like using plastic bags.  I told my driver in Morocco that I wish I could just take a photo of this calamity…but how do you take a photo of miles upon miles of plastic bags littering the Desert?  It’s impossible.  All I can tell people is to stop using them.

If you plan on doing some extra shopping, make sure to throw in some extra shopping totes that you can get just about everywhere these days.  They definitely make it easier to carry extra purchases, and the bags are easy to collapse and carry inside your tote.

Also, the best way to move around in tote bags (the organizers way)is to put everything in pouches.  I keep my makeup/emergency tampons in my YSL cosmetic case.  I keep cords for laptops, blackberries, etc. in a pouch of their own that makes it easier to find, so your not endlessly searching all over the bag for your headphones.  Pouches are a godsend for those who carry big bags.  They’re also easier to transfer items from one bag to another.

My favorite place to get pouches?  Well, I love SakRoots.  But I get my collection of SakRoots and R & Em pouches through trading at Little Black Bag.

4.  Stay cool.  Want to know my secret to staying cool in the summer while temps are scorchingly hot?  I wear fabrics that are lightweight.  Now, I hate seeing women wearing tight camisole tops with their bra straps showing (as well as all of their rolls).  Keep that stuff for home, ladies.  There’s no reason to bring it out in public.

Trust me, that look even makes me feel like I’m going to die of heat exhaustion.  People always look so disturbingly sweaty and roasted…it doesn’t look ‘cool’ in any shape or form.

The trick to surviving the summer all lays within the fabric used to make your clothes.  Think breezy fabrics like silk and linen.

Take for instance this top from Tracy Reese (Plenty collection).  It’s a linen/silk blend.  It may be expensive, but you can find Tracy Reese on Gilt.com for $45+.

My stylist introduced me to Tracy Reese last year.  I thank her every single time I wear that top because it’s a godsend in the summer.  It’s light, breezy, and sweat free.  Even if you’re sweating on the inside…it doesn’t show on the outside.

The bonus about this style and fabric is that every time a breeze hits, the fabric sort of picks up that cool air and circulates it around you…keeping you cooler than if you had a sticky, sweaty camisole glued to your body.

These are the types of fabrics you shoot for in the summer months.  Today, I have on a silk chiffon dress from Warehouse that is perfect on this 98 degree day.  To feel the breeze picking up and circulating inside of your dress…it’s what keeps you cool on a scorchingly hot summer day…unlike those cotton/polyester blend tops and dresses.

Ladies, keep it cool not by shedding your clothes.  Keep cool by wearing the right fabrics.  Your body will thank you.

5. Don’t Forget the SunBlock!  I don’t kid about this.  A sunburn can lead to skin cancer.  I got burned horribly in 2000…in 2005 I almost died from skin cancer.  Now, I have to live with that mistake I made in 2000, because I will always have skin cancer.  It is a matter of the cancer being dormant or active.

Protecting yourself from the sun is a serious matter.

I got stuck out in the sun yesterday morning and now my head, neck and face itches like crazy.  I realized that I must have sweated off the sunblock…and I should have worn a sun hat.

Make sure to always have some sunblock in tow.  The rays are getting worse as we lose more and more of that protective ozone layer every year.  Even though it’s hot out, you should pick up a lightweight sweater to wear over your sleeveless tops and dresses, too.  It’s one more layer protecting you from skin cancer.

Have a great 4th of July.  This is where I’ll be…drinking a limoncello. 🙂

Friday Loves The Summer DIY

15 June 2012

Ah…the summer.  Hockey season is FINALLY over.  The Stanley Cup has finally been lifted and I can go back to my normal life…

Oh wait…my life’s not so normal.

The first question someone asked me the day after the Stanley Cup was lifted was: now that you’re retired, what are you going to do with your life?  Well…ask me that in a month after I’m back from vacation.

In the meantime, here’s what I plan on doing this weekend.

1.  DIY Chalkboard Paint.  Well, in the chaos that is my bedroom right now (still rotating my wardrobe because the cold days are still lingering around; packing for Italy; redecorating for the summer months; and needing to do laundry for the last two months) I ended up smacking the suitcase right into my full length mirror and it came crashing down.  Yep…it broke.  7 years of bad luck for me, right?

Well, instead of lamenting over the bad luck, I took one look at the smashed up mirror and thought…DIY PROJECT!

Instead of throwing out the mirror, I’m recycling it.  The mirror frame is being turned into…a chalkboard!

The Idea Room shared her recipe on how to make chalkboard paint in just about any color under the rainbow.  It’s really easy.  I still have some leftover paint from the time that I painted the apartment.  This will help recycle some of that leftover paint, too.

As for the broken shards of the mirror itself, it will go towards a mosaic table I’ve been thinking about doing ever since the roofers smashed my Hermes toucan plate into the kitchen floor!  I couldn’t bare to part with my first Hermes…even if it was broken.  So a mosaic (Hermes) table is definitely in the works this summer.  Now I have some more pieces to add to the table.

2.  Garage/Yard Sales.  One of the great things about summer is that you can find a lot of things being tossed out for next to nothing at garage/yard sales.  I’m in the market for a new side table for cheap because I need it for my mosaic (Hermes) table I’ll be constructing this summer.

There are a lot of blogs out there on how regular joes like you and me found something at a yard sale for less than $5 and turned it into a treasure.

Take for instance A Pinterest Addict’s post on how she changed this dull chair she picked up for $5 and turned it into an incredibly new and beautiful chair.  All it took was a little fabric paint.

Hitting up garage/yard sales allows those inner home decorators a chance to try out something new for next to nothing.  For those who are furnishing or decorating a home for the first time, garage/yard sales allow you to quickly furnish your home without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars.

Where to start?  Craigslist!  You’ll be able to search for and find notices of yard sales in your community listed on Craigslist.  Just make sure you write down the time (always sucks to show up early…you can’t browse).

My favorite hits are always the ones where more than one household is hosting a yard sale.  It then becomes a community yard sale.  So always try to put those sales at the top of your list to hit up first.  You may find everything you’re looking for and more in that one stop.

These are the exact Mason Jars I picked up. While I use them for canning purposes, they can also be used in various ways…like adding sand at the bottom with candles to create a new tablescape.

Thanks to garage/yard sales, I’ve found flip top canning jars from the 50s and 60s for $1 a piece just days after seeing how they were listed for $35 each in a magazine.  I’ve also found gorgeous pieces from all over the world (like a geisha bust and a wooden vase from Indonesia).  I also found a beautiful crystal globe vase for $3.  The owner would only sell it to someone that she knew would cherish it.  She was really attached to the piece.  The fact that she was willing to sell it to me, and the fact she cried when she let it go…makes me cherish that piece even more.

A lot of my favorite treasures were found at garage/yard sales.  I always like things that have a little bit of history to it and isn’t just on some clearance rack.  These items are being given a second life.

3.  New uses for PAINT.  Oh, leftover paint…what am I going to do with you?  I painted my apartment five years ago, and because of the laws governing waste removals like paint, I can’t seem to get the leftover paint out of my apartment.  So what’s a girl to do?

INSERT…new DIY projects. 🙂

For the painted vases, Oh So Lovely explains just how she was able to create these beauties.

I also saw another pin on pinterest where someone used old glass tea light jars to create a similar look like you see in the picture with the cans.

If you can’t tell…I like simple DIY projects…like something that can be done in just a few steps.

4. Where In The World Have I Been?  If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m a bit of a jetsetter…always running all over the world.  Well, I also photograph every place that I’ve visited.  My problem is…what do I do with the thousands upon thousands of pieces that are so good…they’re worth putting up?

While I realize that as a photographer, I may be sitting on a gold mine of work that can be sold…as the person that took the shot, it’s a moment from my memory of the places I have been.  That’s something I want to see on a regular basis.

But how does one go about seeing it all on a regular basis?  Well, just perchance I had an epiphany.  I took one of my new Paris magnets from off of the refrigerator and went to my front door and stuck it on there.  Surprise, surprise…it stuck.

So now I’m in the market for little circular plain magnets…and a lot of them.  It’s an easy way to put up all of the really remarkable photos I’ve taken over the years and put them in a place where I will see them all of the time.  I can probably put up 50-100 photos on the door.  When I get tired of looking at a few of them, I can just easily remove them and put a different group up.

Believe it or not, I’m actually putting the photos up based on color scheme.  This summer, the door will match the summer decor of the whites and blues (so photos from Santorini, Greece will flood the door, along with the blues of Morocco).  In the fall, I’ll probably change the photos to the more gothic pieces from Paris and the photos of Prague in the fall.

As for that great big picture…the search is on to decide which photo I’m going to supersize and put up on the wall.  The above idea comes from Design Darling.  I think something from Paris would do the trick.  We’ll see what wonders I bring back from Italy.

5. DIY Seasonings.  Now, why didn’t I think of this?  Want a non-preservative seasoning?  Why not DIY?

The one seasoning that gave me a D’OH! moment was the taco seasoning.  I always order taco seasoning when I order my groceries because I come up with about a zillion ways to come up with the taco stuffings without using meat.  I never even thought about making the seasoning myself.

Thanks to Self-Reliance by Jamie for sharing the recipes she found!

Although, since these will be staple items in my pantry…I plan on upcycling some of my jars and creating a few labels to give them a gorgeous and French kitchen worthy touch.

Thanks to The Painted Hive, she lets us in on how you can create these dishwasher safe labels.  For the jars pictured here…she found these SLOM jars at Ikea.

I love these kinds of jars.  They are perfect for just about anything and everything you need for storage purposes.  They’re even great when you’re canning the summer’s bounty.

******************

So my first weekend in retirement = catching up on all of those DIY projects I’ve been pinning since I got on Pinterest.  There are so many things I want to do that I can’t wait to start.

Just wait until I get back from Italy.  I plan on buying a sewing machine so that I can start my next DIY project…turning all of these damn NHL t-shirts into something I actually love…PURSES.

Although, I’m saving that Clarkson t-shirt for something special…I’m thinking a skirt.

And people thought I wouldn’t have anything to do in my hockey writing retirement…

Channeling Monica Bellucci

14 June 2012

One of my favorite movie stars/models is the Italian siren Monica Bellucci. The first time I saw Malena, I couldn’t help but think…WOW…I want to be her.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/8j-53yv1nD4]

Well, for $32 a pop…you can get the same lip color in siren Monica Bellucci reds from Dolce & Gabbana (at Saks.com).

She looks amazing, sultry and super hot, right? I’ll let you in on a little secret about her…she’s 48 years old!  Can you imagine looking that amazing at 48?  She was the same age as me when she starred in Malena (36 years old).

There’s something about Italian women that just screams absolutely sexy, right?

Well, since I’ve entered the dating sphere again, I’ve been thinking about the type of woman I want to be, especially as I head towards 40.  I want to be like Monica Bellucci…at least that kind of woman she comes off to be in her films and photos…a very confident, beautiful, sexy and strong woman.

So channeling Monica…here’s what’s on my mind…

RED.  How many of you have ever worn a red dress?  This dress is from Zara ($79.90).  From my recollection…no other color stops a man dead in his tracks than the color RED.  That may have something to do with those STOP signs and STOP lights.  A woman brave enough to don this color in a dress…that says WOW!

THE SHOE.  It’s Christian Louboutin ($625.00). It’s classic.  It’s sexy…and nothing says really sexy than how you feel knowing you have Christian Louboutin shoes on your feet.  Your confidence level goes through the roof!  Oh, and it also helps that there’s that little bit of red underneath.

THE DARE.  Monica always likes to show off her assets (aka ample bosoms).  This is a dress that Monica would dare to wear in public and look absolutely amazing in.  This Akris Belted Jersey Dress ($4,990) may be out of price range for most of us…but maybe I can get it at 80-90% off somewhere???  The trick here is that this is not trampy.  It’s black, sophisticated and designed well.  It only highlights one asset…not the whole package.  Your attention goes to one area…not the whole package.  The trick is to show off your best asset in a very subtle, yet daring way and bring the attention to that one spot.

THE DESIGNER.  One label sticks out above the rest in sexiness, and that is Dolce & Gabbana.  Monica wears a lot of D&G…and she always looks fabulous!  This sweater is $180.  It’s very reminiscent of the sweaters that Monica has been seen wearing in many photo shoots.  Although…she wears nothing underneath.  A black lace bra or lace tank underneath will still get the brains a whirring…

THE LBD.  If you’re a woman, you know all about the LBD (aka Little Black Dress).  We all have that go to dress that makes us feel hot and amazing.  Well, here’s one in the D&G ($390) variety that screams sophistication dripping with sultry sexiness.

WHAT’S UNDERNEATH.  I’ve always loved the sultry ‘what’s underneath’ clothes from the days of old…like this Jucca slip ($85).  I think these days fashion consultants everywhere have us now trained to think: MUST WEAR SPANX! Since when did grandma panties become sexy?  Sure, it holds us in, but I feel more uncomfortable than I do sexy.  Every girl knows that if you want to feel sexy, sometimes something as classic and simple as a slip with a touch of lace at the hem is all you need…or even a sexy pair of La Perlas.  {I didn’t say Victoria’s Secret…I said La Perla!}

A NEW LOOK.  Sometimes a fresh new look is all you need to feel confident in your own skin.  A new cut and color can truly transform the way you look and get you out of your old tired and boring look that you’re so used to.  Even coming home to your guy with a sexy new hairdo is enough to spark a little more passion… (just saying)

A NEW YOU. You think I’d miss mentioning diet and exercise? HA!  The most important and key thing about being beautiful isn’t just about confidence…it’s about being the change you seek.  That starts with being healthy and beautiful inside and working on having a healthy body each and every single day.  Eating the things that your body needs is vital.  Cut out all of the crap in your diet, because you know if you eat it, you’ll end up wearing it somewhere on your body.  Workout, not because you want to look beautiful, do it because your body needs you to do it in order to run efficiently. You don’t want plaque clogging up your arteries that will one day lead to a heart attack.  You don’t want to feel your bones become brittle because you didn’t get enough calcium or exercise to make your bones and muscles stronger.  You do this FOR YOU…not to look better.  You do this to BE BETTER.

Your health is the key thing when it comes to hitting the next milestone in life and being a person you’ve always dreamed of being.  For me, I’ve always wanted to have that aura of beauty like Monica.  It’s in everything she does…all the way down to the way she looks at the camera.  She’s an enchantress of epic proportions.  That’s what I want to be when I’m her age.  That dream begins today.

This Week’s New Baubles

12 June 2012

I am in love with these two new pieces of arm candy I picked up from JewelMint.

I had a couple of credits just sitting there, so I decided to just splurge and order something.

The Mumbai Bracelet (in the silver) is always sold out.  It’s one of their more popular pieces.  I’ve been wanting this bracelet for a long time now, so I was lucky to log on and see that it happened to be back in stock.

The bronze cuff is called the Gold Swan Cuff.  I think I got it more for the name…which makes me love it even more.

For those new to the whole Jewel Mint world, JM is curated by the lovely actress, Kate Bosworth and Cher Coulter.  It’s a members only site, where you can order pieces from the collection for $29.99 each (aka a monthly membership service).  You can always choose to skip a month.

I’ve slowly been getting into JM, because I’m so used to the quality from BaubleBar, and it seems like JM is starting to become a little more qualitative, almost the same caliber as BB.

What I love the most about the Mumbai Bracelet…this is part of JM’s ‘Celebrities Give Back’ campaign.  The proceeds from the sale of the Mumbai Bracelet goes to benefit actress Emmanuelle Chriqui’s charity of choice.  [She’s wearing the Mumbai Bracelets in the picture.]

Emmanuelle chose RAISE Hope for Congo, a charity she’s been working with for years which “raises awareness and helps protect Congolese women and girls against the sexual violence in the conflicted region of the eastern Congo.”

So in a way, this is a ‘feel good’ kind of purchase.

I’ve always liked the collection from the ‘Celebrities Give Back’ closet.  You’ll find several beautiful pieces from the charitable giving collection that you can order [when in stock] which will help benefit others around the world.

That’s probably the best thing about Jewel Mint…the charitable giving collection.  Take a look around.  Who knows, you may find a few pieces you’ll love.

I really can’t wait to get back from Italy now.  Leave it to Anthropologie’s new catalog to entice me to go shopping for awesome looks.  Here are a few of my favorites from their Look Book.

Glimmered Ankita Dress, $198.

Shivali Dolman, $158.

Half-Day Maxi Dress, $168.

Color Swatch Tee, $58.

Parted Paisley Tank, $78.

Dime Novel Wide-Legs, $98.

Cut Lace Caryall, $198.

Handpainted Taika Flats, $128.

Yuzu Mary-Janes, $168.

Isn’t everything just adorable?  Can’t wait to get back from Italy and add all of these items to my closet.  I think my favorites are definitely the lace cut out tote and the handpainted Taika flats.  Those flats are apparently from Tuscany, Italy.  I’m going to be on the lookout for the artisans there to see if I can pick mine up while I’m in Italy.  To be continued…

Friday Loves The Things That Make You Think

8 June 2012

1. Midnight in Paris.

Now, here’s a movie I’m absolutely in love with.  I saw it for the first time this week and I had to laugh because this guy sounds just like me!  I think it’s because he’s a writer, that’s why!

He heads to Paris for the first time and just falls in love with the city.  He talks about the days of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda.  He talks about Gertrude Stein, the muses of Picasso and the eccentricity of Salvador Dali.  This movie was like my fantasy vacation in Paris last October.

The irony of it all…I was actually in all of those places in the movie…at least the 21st century version of the old haunts of Hemingway and his peers.  That was actually what my trip was about in Paris in October…going to all of the old haunts of Hemingway.  My guide was the book “The Paris Wife.”  I had just finished reading the book before I left for Paris and I was mesmerized by everything Ernest Hemingway.

He was eccentric, too.  But he was also insanely genius and had a way with words that made you think…WOW…this man is an absolute genius that really makes you think!

The weirdest part of the movie was when the lead character (played by Owen Wilson) exits out of the 20s and reappears in the 21st century…he’s standing right outside of a laundromat.  He does a double take.  SO DID I!

I walked past that laundromat several times on the way to my hotel wondering why tourists kept looking in there and then looking at their guidebook like, “Something’s not right.”  Ends up, that spot was an old haunt of the greats of the 20s long before it was turned into a laundromat.

The whole premise of the movie is about wanting to be somewhere else, whether it be a new city or a new time, because you feel like your life would be better if you were somewhere else.

At first, I was a little upset at how Woody Allen was shooting down that feeling.  But then at the end, he proved that the feeling that you belong somewhere else…it’s because of some greater reason…like FATE.  In other words, you have that feeling because you were meant to be there all along.

It made me think about how I ended up in New York City.  In 2000, during the days of Sex and the City in my 20s…my roommate and I used to dream about moving to New York and living the glamourous life of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte.  We wanted to be them.  I always wanted to be Charlotte…but I ended up being Carrie.

I still laugh about how I became a writer.  The only reason I went to NYC, it was because that was where life led me.  It was the only city in the world that was opening its doors up to me.  I kept looking at Los Angeles and this guy that was planning his life with me and all I could think about was how he had shattered me.

He told me he chose to love someone else, yet he was following me to Los Angeles, because that’s where I was going to be.  I kept thinking…”Am I your best friend or someone you can’t live without?  Am I THE ONE?”  We had gone through a serious roller coaster ride those months leading up to moving.

The first blow was me finding out about her…then listening to him tell me he chose to love her and I had to accept that.  He told me that if I was THE ONE, I had to prove it to him.  Funny, because I never said anything about anyone being THE ONE.  He knew I was.

I was on the brink of insanity because of all of the tugging, pulling and pushing of emotions.  Then he called me up at my office one day and said, “Why do you pretend like there’s not more there when there really is?”  I changed the subject and tried to get him to talk about something else.

You see, that was six months after I found out about her.  I then put my plan into motion to leave.  I started sending applications to London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Paris.  The only city that bit and bit hard was New York.

I got a job offer. I gave two weeks notice from my job.  I packed everything up and moved to New York…while everyone (but my family) thought I was moving to LA.  I was supposed to go ahead of schedule…find a place, etc.  I made them all think that’s what I was doing.

I ended up moving to NYC.  I waited two weeks after settling in.  I sent out a mass email (included him on it), and then said, “Oops, I didn’t move to LA, I moved to NYC instead.”

Yes, everyone was shocked because they knew exactly why I did it.  I did it because I was hurt.  I wanted a better life…a life without him.  I couldn’t keep it going in LA.  He would have followed me there and still made me feel worthless, because he would have still had that other girl around.  I would have never felt good enough to be loved by him.

The funny thing is, despite all of his friends telling him to go after me, he never did.  I know why he never did.  He believes that when I’m done being mad at him, I’ll come back.  I hate that.  I also hate that he’s right.  Why?  Because he knows I’m THE ONE.  And for some insane reason…this is f*cking true:

So I know what it’s like to move somewhere…change your entire life, because you would be happier somewhere else.  I don’t regret moving to New York.  I found myself.  I found who I am.  I found a career that I love and enjoy.  I learned that I don’t like being the center of attention, I like being behind the scenes…being behind the cameras and recording what I see, feel and hear.

I also learned how to forgive him while I was in New York.

2. One Day.  There just might be a recurring theme this week (thank you, universe).

While I have the book and I’ve been reading it, the movie hit the spot exactly.  You think it didn’t remind me of the story of me and that guy?

This movie takes a glimpse into the life of Emma and Dexter every year since the moment they met on July 15th beginning in 1988 and going until 2011.  Every July 15th, it shows what their lives are like that day with and without each other.  It shows the struggles in careers, relationships, and even in friendships.  It shows the downsides of humanity, booze, drugs and losing a parent to cancer.  It shows what it’s like to be with someone you don’t even love, just because you don’t want to be alone.

It even shows the years that they were apart.  She couldn’t bear to be around him because of his substance abuse and who he had become.  She was tired of him, so she spent years away from him.

It even shows a girl moving away to Paris and comes into her own as a writer (sound familiar anyone?).  She starts to fall in love with a jazz musician in Paris when Dexter, newly divorced, comes looking for Emma and asks her to give them a chance.

She thinks he’s nuts…but she also knows he’s THE ONE.  So she takes a chance.

We then see the Emma and Dexter years with them together.  It was meant to be between those two.  They were best friends, now married.

But then you realize the significance of July 15th…and all of those wasted years when they were not together.  It really sits home with you that all of those years were wasted.  Those were the years they weren’t with the person they were meant to be with, because by the time they were together, it was only for just a short moment.  You can’t get back all of those years that you should have been together.

When I was first diagnosed with cancer, I didn’t tell him.  I waited five years before I told him.  That was after that song he released and everything.  He was more upset with me that I didn’t tell him before.  It was something he would have wanted to know…even if I chose to be away.  He had seen me a few months after the three tumors were removed…and I didn’t say anything then.

It was hard enough dealing with the other ‘life factors’ that were involved in that moment.  Throw cancer into the mix and then you pretend like the other open wound doesn’t exist.

His thing was…I had cancer before I left for New York…and I never told him.  I almost died.  The doctor said if they didn’t operate right then and there, I would die in two weeks.  That was four months after leaving.

Broken heart…throw cancer on top of it…and you can say that was a very difficult period in my life.  I kept thinking…why would he waste his life not being with me when he’ll live with regret if he ended up losing me forever?

Even through the roughest patches, I found solace in something else.  In a strange way…hockey helped me to heal.

As this career winds down and I’m seeing the final days of this amazing ride, this movie “One Day” reminds me of my own Dexter…my best friend that broke my heart.  Emma reminds me a lot of myself…and how I felt through all of these years…including that pain of loving someone and not liking them at that point because they are so f*cked up.

At one point someone said in the movie that Emma made Dexter decent, and in return, he made her happy.  When I heard that, I actually cried.  Em and Dex…that’s me & the rockstar.  There was a time that he quit smoking, drinking and doing drugs just because I existed.  I never told him to do it, he just did it because I didn’t do those things.

He put me up on a pedestal and changed his entire life because I existed.  He thought of retiring from music and I gave him the encouragement to just go after the dream.  What did I want from him?  Happiness…and a life shared together.

When I stopped being happy, I stopped wanting to share our life together.

During my recovery, I always thought about how short life is.  I would get so mad at him, because I was doing this without him…if only he would have just chased me down and asked me to change my mind, I would have dropped it all.  The moments together can be the best moments of your life when you are with your best friend…and hell when you are apart.

If anything was going to push me to finally forgive him…”One Day” was the movie.  And since everything works in threes with us…I had a dream earlier in the week about him…then my brother calls me and tells me, “I think it’s time you two got back together.”  Then I see this movie…and it was US.  You think the universe is telling me to go back?

Maybe I’ll just move to Paris instead.

3.  The New York Times.  I don’t think I’ve ever felt compelled to subscribe to the NYT until I read two amazing articles this week from their writers.

The first story was on Derek Boogaard (part two) by John Branch.  Back in December, he wrote about the former New York Ranger and his concussions that led to his addictions…and later his death.

This new tale is about Boogey’s descent into his addiction with painkillers.  This article is journalism at its best.

The second story was called “Prep School Predators.”  It’s quite amazing how times have changed in identifying pedophiles, especially the ones that are teachers.  But then again…seeing that there’s a 35% spike in reports of sexual contact between school administration and students in NYC alone at the start of 2012, it makes you think that either there are more predators, or that students are telling rather than hiding it like they did back in the 70s/80s/90s.

The stories that came out of Horace Mann are horrible tales.  Even though they took place in the 70s and on up to the early 90s, it doesn’t  stop the fact that these horrific acts that happened to these kids ended up damaging them for the rest of their lives.  One kid tried to commit suicide twice.  He succeeded on his second try.

The tales of Horace Mann are a reminder on why it is important to be diligent about reporting abuse and teaching kids what sexual abuse is.  The stories are just heartbreaking and scary.  No child should ever go through what these kids went through.

The New York Times have done an excellent job reporting these stories.  They are incredible and well written.  These are the stories that are changing the world today.  John Branch alone, has been changing the way the NHL has been doing things.  How?  Just by delivering the news to the world that THIS is happening…and it can be prevented…it could save someone else’s life.

That’s the same lesson being echoed in “Prep School Predators.”

NYT is once again at the top of the news makers in the world.  Excellent work!

4. Porn Star TATAS.  This has got to be the most hilarious story to come out of the post-season: Taylor Stevens, porn star, distracting Peter DeBoer.  See, I don’t know what’s funnier…DeBoer making Yahoo! headlines (he was #2) because of a porn star or the “no-look pass” video.

Equally amusing…YES!

5.  Apologies. I hate dreaming about apologies.  It means that you are too tired to fight anymore.  That you’re done being mad and that it doesn’t matter who was right and who was wrong, it just means saying “Let’s move on from this.”

I am not the type of person that forgives easily.  Just ask my Mom.  She’ll tell you not to piss me off unless you want a lifetime ban.  Then my brother will tell you…”Pray she doesn’t hate you because if she does, God may off you, just like that.  Heart attack?  Loved one hurt?  Oh, it will all happen, because God always sides with her when she’s been hurt.”

In a way, I think those kinds of stories (while all true) prevents a person from learning how to forgive or to just be brave enough to say, “I’m sorry.”

I dreamed last night about saying “I’m sorry” to THE ONE…because I left.  I realized that just like in the story of Dexter and Emma, you can miss out on the most troubling things in life when best friends are apart and not talking to each other.

There’s that pain in the whole, “Where were you when I was going through this?”  There’s that pain that you weren’t able to share some of the hardships in life with someone…or at least that one person that would know how you felt and could connect with that pain, share it with you and know where to go from there.

There’s that sorrow of needing someone to be by your side through the worst of it, and the pain that goes into knowing that you weren’t by their side when they went through that pain.  You weren’t there when they needed you the most.  They weren’t there when you needed them the most.

Saying, “I’m sorry,” is that true final stage that says that you are done with being mad.  You want to let bygones be bygones.  It’s not about who was right or who was wrong…because whatever you were fighting about…you’re willing to let go of it all…the hostilities, the pain you felt…you learn to forgive them for hurting you.  All you want is to return to the way things were when everything was good and happy.

With that, you take with you the things that you’ve learned along the way that helped you to grow into a greater human being. Learning how to forgive the one that hurt you worse than any other human being has ever hurt you…takes courage, faith, and the belief that no matter what happens, there’s something greater in all of this…you’re taking a chance.

Carrie Underwood once sang, “Sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing is just a grain of sand. What you’ve been out there searching for forever is in your hands.  And when you figure out love is all that matters in the end, it sure makes everything else seem so small.”

Packing for Italy

7 June 2012

Ah, Italy.  What does a girl traveling on her own take with her when she’ll be running all over the country for two whole weeks?

Well, the first thing is a QUALITATIVE suitcase.  My last trip in Europe cost me two suitcases, and I retired a third one after my trek across Ottawa in the snow, salt and mud.  I’m down to two suitcases now.  A Polo Ralph Lauren carry-on and a bigger American Tourister suitcase that I picked up from my grandfather’s house after he died (to lug back all of the memorabilia, photos, etc. I wanted from his home).

For me, having a suitcase that can pack the punch all over a European country is ideal…and very difficult to secure because cobblestones will ruin every single suitcase you can muster to find.  So I’m just praying that my grandfather’s suitcase will survive this trek across Italy.

The key items I’m carrying is my great big Just Cavalli tote bag (biggest bag I own) and my new Rebecca Minkoff bag.

This Minkoff bag is one of the key pieces I’ll be toting around.  The mission is to structure my wardrobe around this key piece.  Sounds crazy, right?

Well, blame The Glamourai for inspiring what I’ll be wearing on this trip.  I saw their photos from their trip to Marrakech and I couldn’t help thinking “What a great idea!”  BE THE FASHIONISTA while traveling.

I probably do the fashionista look while I’m traveling most of the time, but the other ‘most of the time’ I’m basically in jersey pants and a tunic.  While the Moroccan men have informed me that I’m stylish and my clothes are 100% acceptable…the only time they raised a fit was when I wore a pair of jeans.  My driver tried to turn me right back around to go and change until I remarked, “But I’m riding a camel today.”

He stopped and said, “I forgot. You can stay in jeans today then, but don’t wear them again after today.”  He referenced the Saharan heat as the reason why I should not wear jeans.  So taking his advice…you’ve probably heard how HOT Italy can get in the summer…not to mention the humidity.  Keeping that in mind, I’m structuring my wardrobe around being fashionable, in cool fabrics (no jeans), and comfortable.

I decided to take the lead from two fashion icons from their time in Italy.

What better way to get into the spirit of the Italian holiday than to be inspired by America’s favorite sweetheart, Audrey Hepburn, from the movie “Roman Holiday.”

Even America’s favorite first lady, Mrs. Jackie Kennedy Onassis, is even a worthwhile candidate to be inspired by.

The key components here are 2 MUST HAVES: 1) ballet flats and 2) amazing shades.

Jackie always has her classic Gucci hobo on her arm.  The most important part of her look all lies in her accessories.  From her necklaces to belts to scarves, she dresses up even the basic of garments.

Did you also notice that everything pictured here are basic colors, with only the dress for a special night out with the print?  Even her skirt could be mixed and matched with the other colors she wore during her different visits to Italy.

Both Audrey and Jackie remind us to keep it classic and to keep it simple.  Both can go a very long way.

Most importantly, Jackie definitely shows how we can wear relaxing outfits, and still look absolutely amazing.

So the key to packing for this trip?  I’m packing fewer things, but better things.  [Remember that theme?]

To keep cool, the maxi dresses and maxi skirts will be the number one item in my suitcase.  Jersey pants, tanks, tees and a cardigan will keep me comfortable.  Plus, I always make sure to bring a travel sized bottle of Tocca’s Delicate Wash to wash my clothes to hang and dry overnight or while I’m out and about.

The most important way to pack is to make sure that you have a color scheme that compliments each other in about 100+ways.  In other words, you could pack 10 key pieces and interchange them with each other into over 100+ outfits.  That is probably the most important way to pack.

Most women usually choose how they pack based on one outfit at a time.  That then equates to 10x too many clothes and a suitcase that will barely close.

Take for instance this montage from The Stylish Geek:

These 11 items can pack a punch.  She was able to come up with 10 different outfits with these pieces.  I’m sure she could have come up with way more (but that would have been a very long post)…but the key here is in the accessories.  She could come up with a lot of outfits thanks to all of her different accessories.

When it comes to accessories, I’m really big on scarves.  Lately, Valentino scarves.  Believe it or not, I’ve been trying to come up with a zillion different ways to wear a Valentino scarf…especially as a shirt.  Bag Snob showed us a few of the different ways you can turn a scarf into a shirt:

Looks fabulous, right?  What’s really great about the scarf as a shirt?  Packing a scarf is so hassle-free.  It’s so lightweight, it takes up no space at all.

For those who don’t like the thought of showing their belly…I always wear a tank or a tee under the ‘scarf’ as a shirt’ look…just in case anything were to fall out or the scarf came undone.

As for accessories…I’ll be packing a lot of statement jewelry from Bauble Bar, and a few different belts.  Shoes?  Besides my tennis shoes, Speedo sandals and ballet flats…that’s all that’s coming along.  Shoes can take up a lot of space.  If I’m going with one suitcase, a tote bag (for shopping) and my new Minkoff bag…trust me, I’m not bringing a lot because I want to bring some bulky stuff back with me.

My sun hat arrived from Little Black Bag.  It’s nice, foldable (a neutral color) and easy to maneuver into whatever shape I want.  It’ll be a lot of fun to wear with the many outfits I’ll construct.  But most of all…it matches with my Minkoff bag!

Will I wear something hockey related?  Well, that Jagr shirt is just itching to be worn, but I’m itching to remove all Flyers notations in the shirt…even if I have to cut a hole in the middle of the shirt to remove that logo (don’t think I won’t do it).  It would provide some serious ventilation in the back. 🙂

But we’ll see if it even makes the suitcase, because my goal is to keep it 10 clothing items (not counting shoes) to get me through the two weeks all over Italy.

As you can probably figure out by now…the color schemes will all compliment the Minkoff bag…but I can’t start putting together the Italy wardrobe until it arrives.  So excited!

More to come…

Friday Loves

1 June 2012

1. Frozen Planet.  I am all about the BBC’s “Frozen Planet” this week.  It is probably the coolest and most intriguing documentary I have ever seen.  I’ve learned so much from it.  These guys filming the North and South Poles have the coolest jobs in the world (figuratively speaking, as well).

After watching the behind-the-scenes video of the filmographers capturing footage of the penguins in Antarctica, their job also looks like it has to be the scariest adventure too.  If these guys are caught on the coast filming penguins when 80-120 mph winds pick up, they’re screwed.  Camp is 2 miles away…and they have to get back somehow (with all of their equipment).  They could either lose one of the camera guys (they struggle to not get blown away), or get lost when those winds come down.

Other times, they felt their cabin getting ready to be lifted up while they were in it…and this was during the summer!  It’s like an Antarctic Hurricane.

I keep watching these guys thinking…I so want to be on that adventure!

The cat even sat down on the couch to watch the white wolves in the Arctic as they were hunting.  She’s enjoying the program just as much as I am.

In America, Discovery released the video of the same footage as narrated by Alec Baldwin.  I prefer the untainted BBC version (because they’re the ones that filmed it).

Check the videos out online.  Discovery has many of the videos available online for consumption.  Not only did I learn a lot, including discovering species I never even knew existed, but I enjoyed the scenery.  It was absolutely beautiful.  I especially enjoyed watching how a snowflake is created.  No two are ever alike.  🙂

Even though I picked up these DVDs from the library, I’m definitely going to have to buy them.  I love the show!

Can’t wait to start booking some nature trips in the near future.

{I also learned that I don’t like killer whales.  They’re beautiful, highly intelligent, but absolutely cruel.  They need to learn to eat just fish…not seals or other whales.  I’m having a hard time watching the killer whales while they hunt.}

2. Seaweed Chips.  Since hockey is still ongoing for me, I like to pick something up for dinner on the way to the arena (because I can’t always eat what they offer for the media meal).  I think the Devils are used to my weird diet and how it’s difficult for me to eat, so they just let me do whatever and bring my own food.

Well, while I was picking up some soup and aloe water, I saw Seaweed Chips with Olive Oil.  I thought…why not?  It would be a healthy alternative to the chips and onion dip offered up in the press box.

Gotta say…I LOVE THEM!  I think the perception when most people look at it is that it will taste horrible, but they’re actually really good.  For 30 calories per serving, I’m good with just making it my meal.  It can be filling and very easy to digest.

It has a little bit of a salty after taste, but no salt is added.  That’s the natural sea salt you’re tasting.  It’s not added, because seaweed comes from…SALT WATER.  It’s the sea salt from the ocean you’re tasting.

What’s great about the ‘easy to digest’ part…seaweed actually helps to boost your metabolism and get rid of BELLY FAT!

While I could say, “Eat Up!”  I know people go haywire and overindulge in something they find out is good for you (or in this case…trigger word was ‘get rid of BELLY FAT!’).  Like everything, eat in moderation.  I usually eat 1/2 a pack of seaweed chips (comes in 2 serving sizes) if I’m snacking.  If it’s my dinner, I eat the whole pack (60 calories).  That also means that I eat this one or two times a week, not every single day.

Your body needs a lot of different things…just not all at once.  So add this to your diet, but don’t overdo it.

They’re a good, healthy snack to add to your diet.  My friend recommended this to me during a time when I needed to find a strategy in sneaking iron into my diet.  Seaweed chips were easy to get down and digest (i.e. something that my stomach liked).  Now, I eat them as the healthier snack alternative because I choose to “Have Fewer Things, But Better Things.” 😉

3. Spaghetti Aglie, Olio, e Peperoncino.  Thanks to Fab Fatale for directing me to this recipe from Yum Sugar.  It’s a great way to get me into the ITALY state of mind (t-minus 26 days and counting until I hit Italian soil).

What is it?  It’s spaghetti with minced garlic, olive oil, and chili flakes.  What did I do differently?  I added grated parmesan and freshly grated Romano to the recipe (I also used whole grain/whole wheat penne and fusili instead of spaghetti).  I mixed it up and used it as a base grain for the week (easy to grab during the week).

As a base recipe, I was able to take this basic pasta and make a few different meals out of it, so it was like I was having something different every night.  One night, I added chicken with a tomato sauce on the side.  Another night, I added ham and peas.  Tonight, I’m going with capers, fresh tomatoes and fresh bell peppers.

It’s so delicious!  It beats having just the plain pasta with nothing on it in the fridge (and then it ends up getting tossed because I won’t eat it or come up with new recipes).

4. GabiFresh.  If you’ve noticed what are the latest things trending around the world right now, you might have found that one of my favorite bloggers, GabiFresh, has become the subject of some controversy over one of my favorite posts she’s done recently on her new bathing suit.

Now, for those of us followers, we knew about the bathing suit long before the blog post.  When I first saw the bathing suit (before the post), I thought…wow, that is so cool.  She looks fabulous.  It’s daring, but she looks fantastic!

I would never be brave enough to pull off the bathing suit (you should see the Muslim one I adopted for travel in Africa), but I thought it was incredible that she did it and she was willing to share her brave moment with the world.  Not once did I ever think that anyone could look at her fab photos and think something negative…until I saw FATKINI trending.

For those of us who are loyal to GabiFresh…we know what her blog is about.  It’s about inspiring women, no matter what your size, to be comfortable in your own skin.  It’s about being brave enough to wear something so scary as a bikini or even a pair of skinny jeans or a sexy dress that hugs all of our curves.  In other words, there are ways to look, be and feel beautiful in your own skin…it all begins with being brave enough to take that chance to wear something you’ve always dreamed of wearing and just take the plunge and do it!  That is the message of her blog.  And that is exactly why she is this week’s favorite blogger that I love to stalk that I’m sharing with all of you.

I think I’ve been following Gabi since December.  All along the way I’ve found her site to be very inspiring not just for me, but I realize for other women out there.  I know what it’s like to be so overweight, you can’t wear anything they put out in the stores.  Designers snub you if you’re bigger than a size 12…and sometimes a size 8.

I remember the days when we were stuck with mumu dresses, sweatpants, oversized sweaters and tees.  We were too fat to be fashionable.  We were the world that the fashion world stuck their nose up at, and said crap about how unhealthy or overweight we were.

It’s bad enough that we say this crap to ourselves…even worse when the world echoes those depressing feelings.  We’ve all been there at one point.  So I applaud Gabi for going out on a limb and empowering women to be comfortable in their own skin and showing us how.

And if you don’t like it…as Rich Hardesty sings, “If you don’t got nothing nice to say, then don’t say nothing at all.”  Just look for the beauty of the moment like most sane people do.

5.  Pekka Rinne.  Now, there’s a reason why Pekka makes my top 5 loves.  I’m helping to promote him for the NHL 13 cover.  He’s currently up against Claude Giroux after defeating Henrik Lundqvist and John Tavares.  I mean…he BEAT Lundqvist.  I have no idea how that is possible, but he did.

Pekka is also part of the Puck Agency family (you know…the agency that represents Ilya Kovalchuk, Anssi Salmela, Anton Volchenkov, Johan Hedberg), so of course I’m going to lend my social media world of support for Pekka, especially after Scott Hartnell decided to tweet something about sending Rinne back to Finland (almost ranks up there with that BizNasty’s ‘commie’ tweet).

So for those who are not Flyers fans, vote for Pekka Rinne. He’s probably the nicest (most innocent) guy I’ve ever met…and he’s never been suspended for getting pissed off and delivering a headshot to some innocent guy out on the ice (like Giroux did).

I still find it funny that Pekka is petrified of Las Vegas.  We were able to snag an interview with him for Inside Hockey while we were in Vegas last year for the NHL Awards.  He had just become an uncle for the first time right around that time.  But the whole Vegas deal…this guy spends 82+ games a year stopping a flying puck made of vulcanized rubber from entering into his net…and he’s scared of Vegas.

UNBELIEVABLE, but true.

So fans, vote for Pekka Rinne in the NHL 13 Cover Vote and vote often HERE.

If You Want Something You’ve Never Had…

30 May 2012

This is my quote of the day.  Of course, I was thinking about my Yves Saint Laurent bag when I saw that, but then I started to really think about it and thought…you know…that has been my secret to success all along.

I was thinking about my hockey writing career and how I was able to cover the hardest team in the entire league to be credentialed into.  Just because you work for the local newspaper, it doesn’t guarantee you entrance into the Devils’ domain.  You would have better chances covering any of the other 29 teams in the league before the Devils would let you in.

When I first started off as a hockey writer, my dream was to cover the New York Rangers.  Even with my breakout article, an exclusive controversial interview with former New York Ranger Darius Kasparaitis, I wasn’t allowed to cover the Rangers.  Instead, my editor gave me the New Jersey Devils.

I took the column, knowing very little about the team.  But I had to prove my worth to be allowed into the Devils’ domain. So I wrote abot the Devils.  I learned every single thing that I could about them.  I watched the games on television, wrote down the post-game quotes, and offered my analysis.

I did this with little to no hope of ever getting into the press box.  I just did my job, pressed on, and came out with my column.

A few months later, my editor told me to call him.  What I wasn’t expecting to hear from him was that the unbelievable had happened…I was credentialed into the New Jersey Devils.  I was told that I had proven myself worthy and the Devils were letting me in.

This also marked one of the first times that the Devils admitted a web-based media person into their press box.  Before this, the NHL only allowed print/TV media into the press.  Web-based media was not allowed.  They weren’t considered reliable news.  My admittance into the press box…it meant all eyes were on me to see what I would do.

Trust me, I was scared to death!  At the end of the game, they announced locker room availability.  I just sat there trembling in my seat saying, “I’m supposed to go into the locker room?  Are you sure?”

I pulled myself together and walked into the locker room.

The first time I was in the Rangers locker room, there was a bit of a commotion from the Rangers’ players, because they all knew who I was thanks to Mr. Kasparaitis.  A few of the younger guys saw me and were giggling like school boys, standing in the hallway, watching me with the rest of the scrum…just to see what would happen.

I was standing near the doorway, when one player stumbled into two of the players standing near the doorway.  I remembered hearing a veteran walk over and ask, “What’s going on?”

It wasn’t my imagination…they were watching me.  I heard a player quickly respond to the vet, “Michelle Kenneth is in there.”

I turned and looked at them when they said my name and then they stood there like three deer caught in headlights.  Yeah…I heard.

That was my first locker room experience…three young New York Rangers falling all over themselves because they saw me in the locker room for the first time.

I didn’t let that weird moment do anything to me.  I went back to my column and wrote what I needed to write.

When I covered the Rangers in Prague that fall, I was told that my first moment in the Devils’ press box was actually the most talked about moment in the NHL that day behind the scenes.  They called me “Jersey Girl” because my first and second games were the most watched moments.  Everyone wanted to know how in the world I got into that press box.  I must have known somebody or Lou Lamoriello personally in order to get in.

I responded that I didn’t know anyone.

That’s when they sat back and said, “Wow.  You got in on your own merit.  You must be one hell of a writer.”

It was while I was in Prague that I discovered that I had created history by being the first web-based media person allowed into the press box.  The NHL and teams throughout the league followed suit with other web-based media after the Devils let me in.

After all, in Prague…only four of us from North America made it out to the New York Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning games.  One of those people just so happened to be the only female (which to the European media was just so shocking…they thought the NHL was innovative, because women did not cover sports in Europe), and the only US web-based media person there.

This all happened in the first year of my career.  I released my exclusive with Kasparaitis on October 1, 2007.  I started writing about the Devils in December.  By April 2008, I was sitting in the Devils’ press box.

I have not met another person in all of these years that have a similar history as I do with the NHL.  The really odd part of this whole thing…when I tell hockey players that I only got into hockey in 2005, they think I’m joking.  I respond…”No, I’m serious.”

That’s when they look at the chain of events and think…that is insane.  How does someone get into hockey in 2005, absorb it in less than a month, have a hockey column within the next 2 years, and then not even 6 months later is sitting in the press box and interviewing players in the locker room?

All I can point to is that this adventure may have a little something to do with my grandfather and his last wish for me.  Two weeks after he died, I was contacted by a news website based in Vancouver asking if I would be interested in my own sports column.  I said, “Make it hockey, and you have me.”  They agreed and the adventure began.

I didn’t even apply for the job…they found me thanks to a recommendation by…wait for it…Britney Spears.

She helped me get my first writing gig, all because she knew I loved to write, loved hockey, and because she knew I had lost my grandfather just two weeks before. Since then…everything has been a bit charmed on this adventure.

Getting back to that quote…my dream was to cover the New York Rangers.  Instead, I covered the New Jersey Devils.  This year, I had plenty of opportunities to switch over to the Rangers, but I decided to stick with the Devils this season and do a few games for the Rangers.  I don’t regret that decision at all.

The weird part was at the beginning of my career, I said that I would retire when the Devils won the Cup while I covered them.  Now, we begin the Stanley Cup Finals and the Devils are still in it.  I announced back in July that this would be my final season covering hockey so I can focus on other dreams.  My intuition told me that this was the final season…I don’t know if it was also predicting the outcome of the New Jersey Devils this year.  If so, the biggest lesson I have learned this season…TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!  IT IS ALWAYS RIGHT!

John Giannone had mentioned to me last week that I had to be the master of predicting hockey outcomes…all the way down to the score and who would win the game that day.  It’s all intuition, and learning to tap into that well to see what will happen.

The weird thing about all of this…I keep asking myself…what are you going to do now to fill up all of your extra time?  Sure, I will have travel and hockey clubs overseas, but what do I want to really do?

Over the season, Prudential Center has been showing “Frozen Planet” up on the jumbotron in between periods.  Each time it came up on the screen, I literally stopped whatever I was doing to just sit in awe at the beauty of the advertisement.

Luckily, last night, I saw that the library had the BBC version of the show (not narrated by Alec Baldwin).  I picked it up and started watching it last night…just in complete awe at these guys that do the video footage.  I mean…watching a wooly caterpillar over how many years before they turn into a moth?  Or staying in -35 degree temperatures in Antarctica just to videotape penguins and the continent!  Who does that?

Well, these guys did it…they even went swimming under the ice to get video footage.

I learned so much in just the first episode.  I saw things that I had never seen before…things that I never knew existed…and I saw just how amazingly beautiful the world is, untouched by man.  I saw the many shades of blue inside glaciers, and the magnificent blues surrounding them.

The weird part of it all…the one thing that I learned was that the animal species are a lot like the human species, even in their own societies.  They can be cruel to others outside of their community…and disgusting.  The elephant seal…as ugly as it is…one male that’s the king of the beach has a harem of 50 females.  Any other male that wants a female…well, they have to fight the king for it.  Polar bear males have to fight off would be suitors to his female.  White wolves have a male and female to take care of their cubs…i.e. they have a family unit.  And albatross love only one other for the rest of their lives (and they live for over 50 years).

It’s just so strange that animals have very similar societal and relationship qualities as can be seen all over the world in the human race.  They really are not all that different from us.

While I sat there in complete awe of the show, I realized what my next dream has been all along…I’ve been wanting to write/photograph for the National Geographic since I was a kid, sitting in my great-grandmother’s living room going through one magazine to the next, just in awe of the world out there.

I’ve actually been thinking about this all year long.  I started reading their website and how the photographers document their journeys.  It’s good to know that out of 500 photos, they’re lucky if one photo captured the moment they were looking for.  It’s just a reminder that even though we see something so perfect and amazing in magazines, it takes a lot of shots just to get it right once.

I wish that the photos I put up on here from my camera looked the way online as it does in the print version.  What I post up doesn’t always reflect the photo accurately due to computer settings.  But the product that’s printed, it actually makes you stop and think, “Wow, that is one great photo!”  Even crazier when I say to myself, “Hey, I took that!”

Sometimes doing something like writing a hockey column for 5 years leads to other adventures.  I think all I ever wanted through all of this career was one thing…RESPECT.  Respect that a woman could know hockey and not be treated as a woman that was looking for her hockey player husband.

I think the way that I saw hockey was very different.  But it’s also been a learning experience in understanding that, and discovering who I am in relation to that.  Some fans expect me to write like the other guys.  No.  I wouldn’t bend.  In everything I do in life, I don’t follow the crowd.  I will purposely move in another direction just to show my own individuality.

I always told the writers I mentored, if everyone is writing the same story, what makes you think someone will read your work if it reads just like everybody else?  You have to have your own nitch that will bring people back to you again and again.  Be the different voice.

I also know that I don’t cater to what fans want.  I don’t care if people like me or not.  They either do or they don’t.  It comes with the territory.  I don’t let others define who I am or what I will write.  I pick the story and tell it.  In a way, I want people to see hockey through my eyes…and a lot of times, it embraces the things that I hold true…and sometimes, you’ll find a life lesson in there.

Why?  Because hockey has always been a learning experience to me.  Every day I walk out of the locker room, I either learn something new, or laugh at others that just don’t get it.

It’s not just the veterans that are older than me that I learn from…even the guys 10 years younger than me have taught me something…not just about hockey, but about life.

For me, when I started this adventure…I was looking for myself and my path in life.  My grandfather’s last wish for me was to get on my path in life and to stay on it.  I wanted the dream…it was something I had never had.  Hell, I didn’t even know what it was.  It was only doing something that I had never done before (become a hockey writer) that I found that dream…and who I am.
