Sorry for the delay on posting this up. I literally forgot until this morning and had to smack my head for forgetting to check my calendar (and I’d written this down at least 5 times).
Feel free to respond in the comments below or later on this evening on the Facebook page. I’ve also created a space on Goodreads for all discussion on books at PW. It will also allow for a chance for everyone to get to know each other, to discover, talk and recommend more books.
Here are some questions for “Star Sand”:
Did you like the book?
Who was your favorite character?
What did you think of the book split up into three parts?
In this day and age, do you think if we were caught up in a war that we could take in and care for an enemy deserter?
Do you think if we were at war, do you think you would be able to live like the people of Hatoma Isle? Not only did they seem resourceful, but they looked out for each other. Do you think you could do the same?
Star Sand is named after the type of sand that is found at Hatoma Isle. Did reading about this little island encourage you to want to visit and gather your own bottles of star sand?
The brother echoed a lot of the war’s propaganda. This is something you see a lot of in most countries. What were you thoughts on the brother? Do you think he was right, keeping strong to what the government said was the right thing to do? Or do you think holding true to the human side was the right thing to do?
Do you think the sisters knew about the cave and what was going on in there?
What did you think of the ending?
I’ve posted my answers to the above questions at the Goodreads discussion board. You can find the Star Sand discussion here.
We’re going into the Wild West for this one. Here’s the summary of the book:
Two decades after the Civil War, Josephine Marcus, the teenage daughter of Jewish immigrants, is lured west with the promise of marriage to Johnny Behan, one of Arizona’s famous lawmen. She leaves her San Francisco home to join Behan in Tombstone, Arizona, a magnet for miners (and outlaws) attracted by the silver boom. Though united by the glint of metal, Tombstone is plagued by divided loyalties: between Confederates and Unionists, Lincoln Republicans and Democrats.
But when the silver-tongued Behan proves unreliable, it is legendary frontiersman Wyatt Earp who emerges as Josephine’s match. As the couple’s romance sparks, Behan’s jealousy ignites a rivalry destined for the history books…
At once an epic account of an improbable romance and a retelling of an iconic American tale,The Last Woman Standing recalls the famed gunfight at the O.K. Corral through the eyes of a spunky heroine who sought her happy ending in a lawless outpost—with a fierce will and an unflagging spirit.

I just finished reading “Mortom” by Erik Therme. I am like…WOW.
When Therme contacted me about reviewing his book, it was for “Resthaven.” But after I finished reading “Resthaven,” I was like…I have to read the other book.
Like “Resthaven,” “Mortom” is a thrill ride all the way until the end. Right when you are so wrapped up in the story and you’re really at the edge of your seat, you read the last words at the bottom of the page, turn the page and you’re looking at a picture of the author.
I swear to you, at the end of both books I did a “Nooo! It can’t be over.” That’s what he does. He really hooks you in. You’re at the edge of your seat and BAM! The story is done. You’re constantly thinking, ‘but what happened to…’ He does it to his readers every single time.
If you’re looking for something to read this Memorial Day weekend that’s filled with mystery, intrigue, edge of your seat…you have no idea what’s going to happen next…then this is your book. It’s a quick read. Try both. I really enjoyed both books. They are free if you are a member of Kindle Unlimited.
I’m obsessed with DIY stuff lately. My friend introduced me to Scrapbook.com and let’s just say…the best thing about it are the free classes! I just took the 8 Ways to Embellish with Lisa Andrews. She gave me so many ideas that I never even thought about…including a new way to journal.
I am a huge David Bach fan. I have been for years. A few years ago, he sent me a free autographed copy of his book. I was in heaven. What I love about David is that he’s passionate about teaching people how to live rich by being smarter with their money. He is getting ready to release his bestseller “Automatic Millionaire” with new updates. Until the release, sign up for his email list. He’s sending free downloads of his work. I downloaded a free copy of his ebook “Finish Rich QuickStart System.” He’ll be sending out free downloads of the “Automatic Millionaire” reboot soon. So get your name on his mailing list!
How to Stay Focused When Working From Home. Something I’ve been learning a lot about lately is taking distractions away when I’m working at home. It is a little difficult when you have a Maine Coon sitting right in your face when you are working at your desk. I was working on a communion card last week and right as the glue was drying, Matthew Lucifer jumped up on the desk and sat right on the card, completely smearing the embossed picture. He won’t move when he’s sitting in front of me while I’m working, so I’ve learned to just stop, give him some love for a few minutes, and then encourage him to take a nap on the sofa behind me or sit in the window. Once that is done, I’ll have at least an hour to work before the next Maine Coon disaster begins.
Looking Fly on a Dime. I just recently came across this blog on my Twitter feed and I am in love. I wish this site was around when I was in my 20s! I love this shirt she found. At first, she thought it was a dress! Ends up it was a super long shirt…and a cool one at that. I absolutely loved her $10 find. I love how she pairs everything together. This site is now an official PW bookmarked site!
10 Tips from a Professional Organizer. These simple tips are words to live by. I’ve learned recently that there is no such thing as multi-tasking. I watch people out on the street walking super slow looking at their phones, totally oblivious to what’s happening around them (like almost getting hit by a car). Schedule out your day with little to no distractions. Make sure you plan accordingly, including scheduling those few minutes of social media time. If you don’t watch yourself, you’ll lose a lot of time and wonder where the day went. You don’t want to be one of those people. Being glued to your cell phone is no way to live.
Want to earn some extra cash? Try these apps to earn gift cards toward purchases. Bonus: Free E-book from a Major Financial Adviser
Want a way to earn a little extra cash and gift cards, especially for the holidays? Here are a few apps I’m using to earn gift cards and credits towards Google Play.
Perk
Perk comes with a few different apps you should download. First, you’ll need to download Perk Wallet. This is the app that will serve as the source where you can pool all of your points together from the various Perk apps to use them towards gift cards or cash. (Please note, as of now, there have been complaints about using the points to cash out, there are no complaints re: gift cards. Until the issue with cashing out is resolved, use all Perk apps for gift cards only.)
After downloading the Perk Wallet app, you’ll need a few apps with which to earn points (green tokens) that you can save up to use towards gift cards. There’s Perklinko, Perk Scratch & Win, Perk TV, and Perk Word Search to name a few. My favorite is the Perk Scratch & Win. All of the games are fairly simple to use.
In a get rich quick scheme world that we live in, many of you are going to be impatient and want to rack up as many points as you can as quickly as you can so you can get your rewards. Don’t waste your time doing this.
My strategy has been to play each day until I reach 50 points. After that, I turn off the game, because I have better things to do. The goal is to save the points to use at Christmastime, so I’m not in any rush to get anything now. It’s the equivalent of putting a little bit of savings away for the holidays. That’s roughly 1500 points a month…maybe more if I hit a jackpot of 100-1000 points (which has happened).
PROS: Win points to cash in for prizes. Easy to use. Games can be a lot of fun. Good way to come up with some extra money to purchase holiday gifts.
CONS: Takes a long time to rack up enough points for a good prize. Cash out has a lot of issues (stick to gift card option). A lot of ads.
BONUS: Get 50 bonus points when you sign up to PERK by using the code: 75c0b672.
Surveys
Google Opinion Rewards is a good way to rack up some money to use toward purchases on Google Play. It’s great to use towards games, books and movies. All you have to do is take surveys as they become available. You are only rewarded a few cents each time, but it can quickly turn into enough money to purchase items at Google Play. In the first week of using the app, I was able to generate a little over $10.
PROS: Free money to use towards Google Play. Surveys are short.
CONS: Only awarded a few cents per survey. Takes a while to rack up enough money to purchase items on Google Play.
The Panel App is a good way to earn points for gift cards by taking short surveys. You can save up your points towards gift cards, or you can use the points towards sweepstakes for bigger prizes.
PROS: Free gift cards.
CONS: Takes a while to accumulate points.
BONUS: FREE E-Book
My favorite financial adviser, David Bach, is now coming out with an updated version of his book “The Automatic Millionaire.” BUT good news! You can get it for free on his site. Even if you’ve read it already, you can also download a free copy of his e-book “Finish Rich Quickstart System.” It’s a good way to refresh your finances.
In all honesty, I think the last time I refreshed my financial records was the last time I read “The Automatic Millionaire.” This little refresher is a good reason to go through and update your financial records, reassess your goals, and plan for your future. Things have changed since the last book, especially for me, so this was a nice refresher.
HINTS
The trick to all of these apps is to remember that this is like creating passive income. It will take a while to earn those gift cards. But keep at it. Spend a few minutes a day on each app and then turn it off. Take the surveys as they come up. If an app isn’t working for you, try something else.
For those using the Perk Scratch & Win, the trick to winning coins and points faster is to use the scratch off that costs the most (1,000 coins per game). You win bigger in those games. If you’re low on coins, play the free scratch offs (one of the three that is for gift cards/prizes). Play until you get enough coins and then switch to the bigger payout scratch offs.
On Sundays, Google Play tends to offer a lot of surveys. It won’t always alert you, so go into the app and right above the dollar amount that shows your Google Play credit, it will say there are surveys available. Just keep clicking until there are no more. I earned $9 one Sunday over the course of 5 minutes.
Also another major hint: try and share the apps. You get more points when you share and others join.
All of my friends have the same lament. They hate spending the weekends cleaning the house all day long. They’d rather be out on the weekends enjoying their time with friends and family. But instead, they’re stuck in the house cleaning on the weekends.
One woman told me she outsourced her cleaning and has a maid come in every other week to help clean the house. She just can’t fathom wasting another Saturday cleaning when she could be out meeting her friends for Mexican food and a nice cold drink.
Another friend has some health issues, so she can’t drag a load of laundry to the laundromat, let alone fold the laundry with the arthritis in her hands. She’s been trying to outsource it to a laundry delivery service, but she’s had no luck finding one. Now her dirty clothes are piling up. She has to keep ordering new clothes all of the time because she doesn’t have any clean clothes to wear. Don’t get her started on the rest of her apartment…
We all have busy lives. We go to work. We have after work activities with friends or family. We’re absolutely exhausted by the time we get home. The thought of making dinner, cleaning house, etc. after a long day at work is asking way too much. So how does a person get everything done?
A few years ago, I came across an article by a woman who does 100 chores a day. She assigns her kids 10-25 chores a day (depending on their age). This may seem like a crazy notion, but the way she broke it down actually made doing daily chores a lot simpler. It only takes 20-35 minutes of your time a day. Sound crazy? I thought it was until I saw the difference doing 100 chores a day made on my home and it didn’t take a lot of time to do.
The way 100 chores works is this…for each dish you wash, that’s one chore a piece. For each dish you put away, that’s one chore. For each piece of junk mail you throw away when you get home, that’s one chore a piece. You see how easy that is to rack up 100 chores in no time?
I start counting chores the moment I wake up. Here’s how my cleanup routine generally looks:
AM
Feed 2 cats, clean 2 bowls. (4 chores)
Make the bed. (1 chore)
Consolidate trash. (3 chores)
Clean out litter box. (1 chore)
Consolidate litter trash with other trash. (1 chore)
Take out trash. (2 chores)
Take out paper recyclables. (1-2 chores)
Put dirty clothes in laundry bag. (5 chores)
By the time I leave in the morning, I’ve done between 20-25 chores. That makes it a lot easier when I get home to finish up.
PM
Take off shoes, put them away. (2 chores)
Put coat away. (1 chore)
Put jewelry/work clothes away. (5-8 chores)
Feed 2 cats, clean 2 bowls. (4 chores)
Throw out junk mail. (2-5 chores)
Wash dishes. (6-40 chores).
Put dishes away. (8-25 chores)
Prep lunch for next day (4-5 chores)
And so on…
This is daily tidying up. When I get to the last 20 chores, I usually have to be inventive and focus on something that doesn’t fall under the daily chores.
I keep a list of items that need to be done and go through that list to find ONE big chore that takes a little longer to do (like clean the oven). You can create your own list by going through each room of your home and taking some time to sit down in each room. Write down each item that needs to be done. This is the list you are going to refer to for the next month as you try to tackle 100 chores a day.
Sure, there are days that I get home at 11:30PM and doing chores isn’t on my list of things to do. I just want to go to bed. On days when I know I’m going to be out late, I try to tackle the majority of the chores in the morning. Whatever is leftover from the day, gets put over to the next day. Maybe I’ll get 91 chores done that day. That means I have to do 109 chores the next day.
Don’t take too much advantage of this leeway. You don’t want to have 125 chores and then 150 chores and then 300 chores. That’s sabotaging your efforts. Make sure you do at the minimum 85 chores a day if you’re going to push a few chores over to the next day. I don’t recommend pushing any chores over to the next day, but I know how it is…you pass out before you finish those last few chores and completely forget about it until the next morning. When I do that, I get up and immediately do those chores I missed the day before, before I get started on the 100 for the day. [Trust me on this, you don’t want to cheat yourself and end up having to do too many chores every day. Do the 100 a day, leaving those extreme instances of pushing chores to the next day to the absolute minimum. Don’t make it a habit.]
On the weekends, I try to do all 100 chores first thing in the morning so I can have the rest of the day to do other things. I try to do a few more of the big chores on the weekends.
Outsourcing. I do outsource the chore that takes up the most time for me…LAUNDRY. It used to take whole afternoons just to wash, dry and fold laundry. I got my Sundays back by outsourcing my laundry to a local cleaner that picks up and drops off my laundry every other week. It costs a little bit more than if I did my laundry myself, but the time I get back is worth the extra cost. Everything arrives folded in the Kon Mari method. All I have to do is put it away (and I don’t count this towards my 100 chores).
If there are certain tasks that take too long to do, consider outsourcing it. If you hire a maid service or a lawn care service, consider having them do the more difficult or nuisance tasks that you can’t take care of yourself. Leave the easier chores for your daily 100 chores. Leave the nitty gritty stuff for the people you hire. That way, you are making the best of the service and of your time.
Get kids in on the task. One of the boys I was with this weekend was lamenting to his mother that she is working them like a slave. All of these chores he has to do (like washing the windows) was like slave labor. She told him that this was his way of paying for his phone, and all of the data he uses on the phone. I chimed in and said, “Actually, all of those chores are designed to be a life lesson. You need to know how to do these things when you are an adult. This is your mom’s way of teaching how to do things for when you are an adult.” His mom agreed, and that quieted him up.
I told him that until he can outsource those chores (like maybe pay his brother to do it for him), he’s stuck with learning this lesson. [Knowing the tightwad that he is, he’s not going to pay anyone to do anything for him.]
If you want to start teaching your kids life lessons on how to clean and take care of their future homes, start off small. For little ones, have them pick up and put their toys away. Start off with a small number (like 5). Slowly work up to more chores as they get older.
Don’t ever think that kids shouldn’t do chores or help around the house. It is your responsibility to prepare them for adulthood. They are going to need to know how to do laundry, wash dishes, iron their clothes, etc. They need to learn to put their things away. They may hate it, but you can make it fun.
Kon Mari as you go. I keep a piece of paper that I carry with me all the time. It says, “Have Fewer, But Better Things.” The more stuff you have, the more stuff you have to take care of. After obtaining so much stuff over the last 12 years to build a home, I all of a sudden discovered I had way too much stuff. It was so much, I was overwhelmed. I found that I spent way too much time taking care of my stuff, that I didn’t have the time to do the things I wanted to with my life.
I started to Kon Mari everything (i.e the Japanese Art of Decluttering). I made a huge dent in my first run. I donated over 20 bags worth of stuff. I am now in maintenance mode, because I know I can still do better and pare down even more. I am constantly going through my things and asking myself if these items bring me joy. I only want to keep the things that bring me joy. My goal is to be more of a minimalist so I have less things to take care of. It will make tidying up so much simpler to do.
I have found that in doing 100 chores a day, I really don’t like having a lot of stuff to take care of. I am constantly going through what I have and getting rid of things. I’m starting to see the value in the things I have invested in. It has also helped me be a far better shopper in that I know only to purchase quality, so I only have to buy it once, not several versions of the same product in order to get it right.
So as you go through your regular cleaning, always ask yourself if this item you are cleaning brings you joy. If it doesn’t, or you have no real use for it, let it go. Or you can do like I do…donate it because you just don’t like taking care of it anymore.
In Summary. Doing 100 chores a day can be fun. When I get home, I start tidying up the second I walk in. I try to complete the 100 chores for the day before I sit down to have dinner and catch up on a show. I do my best not to go over 100 chores a day. I want to leave something for the next day to do.
You’ll find that at the beginning, it may be overwhelming. There’s so much to do, and you’re only doing 100 chores a day. But keep at it. The daily chores start to become less and less, so you have to find other chores to do around the house. There is always something! Pretty soon, your whole house will look nice and clean like those houses you see in magazines and on Pinterest and Instagram.
Keep a list of chores that need to be done around the house, including those big chores. Involve the entire family. While the adults do 100 chores each, the kids can do their own number (depending on their age). Make out a list of things that need to be done around the house and assign a big chore for each person each day, along with the regular daily chores. You are trying to instill clean habits for everyone in the family. Have everyone start their chores as soon as they get home during the weekday, and first thing in the morning on the weekends. The sooner they’re done, the sooner they can play, watch TV, or relax for the evening.
100 chores shouldn’t take you all night to do. It takes me between 20-45 minutes. Just putting your things away as soon as you get home counts. Each sock, each shoe, each piece of jewelry…they all count as a chore a piece. While I always consider that the easy ‘cheat’ chores, some people consider it a necessity in keeping a clean home. Some people prefer to not lay things about and immediately put things where they belong to save on time, clutter and a mess that later has to be cleaned up. Not all people are hard wired to think that way. You have to train yourself to think that way. Until then…consider it your cheat chore to count towards your 100.
Pretty soon you’ll find that tidying up your home is simple and easy to do. You’ll be on your way to having a more perfect and clean home.
Want a simpler, more beautiful way to create qualitative storage boxes? Well, I did. I have been saving up sturdy shoe boxes to create storage in my office, but I needed the right paper to wrap the boxes in.
I headed to the new Paper Source in Rockefeller Center and picked up a few sheets of gift wrap paper. The key to picking out paper in a sea of many beautiful choices, is to select sturdy paper, not the thin paper.
Make sure the colors match so you don’t have a hodgepodge of different colors that don’t match your decor. Make sure to stay within the color scheme (or use complimentary colors) of the room where the boxes will be placed.
You can see that I chose colors in mint green, turquoise and gold, with an offset pattern of black/white (because black/white stripes with any print outfit seems to go well, apply that idea to home decor as well). The patterns don’t necessarily have to match, but the colors should.
One note in doing this project, I don’t recommend using just any kind of gift wrap paper. I purchased the gift wrap sheets, as well as a tube of gift wrap paper (to be more economical). There is a major difference! The gift wrap sheets wrapped around the boxes perfectly, making it easy to assemble. The gift wrap paper from the tube ended up being a complete disaster! I had to pull and re-pull the paper. It bunched up in places it shouldn’t have. It was much more flimsy to work with and you could definitely see that this paper was made for wrapping gifts, and did not work well for projects. It was meant to be ripped up, not to have lasting power. [Keep that in mind while shopping for paper.]
As for the amount of paper you will need for each box, as you can see in the first photo (and below), I used two different types of paper. That was because I didn’t have enough paper and didn’t realize it until I had cut the paper for the lid. One sheet fits a thin shoe box like the one pictured above (with a little bit of paper leftover). You’ll need two sheets for regular sized shoe boxes.
As for tape, I used both regular tape and Paper Source’s Super Tacky Tape. I highly recommend using this super tape. It is so simple to put on and it really adheres the paper to the box, especially when you’re working with glitter paper. The ladies at Paper Source swear by this tape, and I can completely understand why. It is a no fuss double-sided tape that works really well. Once you go with their Super Tacky Tape, you’ll never go back to any other double-sided tape.
Measure the paper to the lid, making sure you have up to an extra inch of paper to tuck into each side of the lid (depending on the size of your box). Cut the paper.
Wind the super tacky tape around the inside of the lid (about 1/4-half an inch from the top). Remove the film on the tape.
Wrap the paper around the box like you would as if you were wrapping a gift.
Tuck the extra paper in over the lid on all sides and secure it to the tacky tape already in place.
If there are any open pockets on the outside of the box that needs to be secured, use the tacky tape to secure the paper to the paper (reminder, this is double-sided tape, so you will secure from the inside of the paper, not the outside).
Secure the paper inside the lid with regular tape (this also helps prevent the paper from tearing when you close the box). Also, make sure to cover up any super tape that may be sticking out from under the paper with regular tape. USE ONLY REGULAR TAPE ON THE INSIDE, NOT ON THE OUTSIDE.
Repeat the steps above for the box.
After completing, write down what the contents are on a label and secure it to the box. Voila! You are done!
NOTE: The reason why you should use the gift wrap sheets – when you wrap the lid and the box, you won’t need to use tape on the outside because it wraps around the box perfectly. You will only use tape on the outside for those rare instances when you need to secure an open pocket (using the double-sided super tape). There should be NO TAPE seen on the outside of the box. Leave the tape for the inside!
I couldn’t believe how nicely the boxes turned out using the Paper Source gift wrap sheets. I was more amazed at how smoothly the paper just wrapped around the boxes and required so little tape (to no tape) on the outside of the box. I could tell the difference in using their regular gift wrap paper vs. the specialty gift wrap. It’s a difference of catastrophe vs. ease and perfection.
A friend of mine said she’s going to try to do this same method with magazine holders. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
What I love about Paper Source is that it is a great place for perfectionists who aim to learn more about crafting and perfect their projects with qualitative products. They’re not too expensive. I love that they don’t just sell everything under the moon for crafters. They sell perfect, qualitative products. Why waste your money trying to save on making the project when you can invest in the right materials from the get go and do the project once and it turn out beautifully? You have less fails when you focus on buying qualitative from the get go.
For those who are challenging yourself to read more, I wanted to share with you a few of the books I’ve read this past week.
[usr 3]
1. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. With the trailers coming out for the new Tim Burton movie, this story looked absolutely fascinating, so I ordered the first three books. I finished the first one in the series last week.
I will say the first book was a little boring. I think he spent too much time setting the story up in this first book, so I’m hoping that the next book really gets into the adventure.
I do like what the author is doing as far as these characters are concerned. Consider the first book the background that lays the groundwork to the adventure. The second book (so far) is starting the kids off on that journey.
[usr 5]
2. 31 Days to Radically Reduce Your Expenses: Less Stress. More Savings. As part of a new series I’m starting here, I wanted to do some research and get some new tips on being frugal. I always like to stay abreast of what people are saying about personal finance and how to be more frugal. While I incorporate a lot of the author’s tips, I did learn a few things along the way.
I really liked her “Household Wish List” suggestion. I also tend to splurge during Christmas. While having a Christmas Savings Account is nothing new, it made me think that it’s not such a bad idea to buy Christmas gifts throughout the year, but also create a savings account for all of those big ticket purchases.
It’s definitely worth a read and FREE to read if you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber.
[usr 5]
3. Six Dollar Family. What I love about this book is how it got its name. The author started off with $6 to her name, living in a homeless shelter to now on her way to her first 6-figures. A lot of her tips are drastic, but I was just so amazed. I loved how she incorporated her DIY for medicine and toiletries in the book. She takes the all natural approach to those DIYs, which end up working out so much better than the expensive stuff at the store.
I downloaded all of the apps she suggested + more. The way I look at life is that you need to bleed every single dollar…make sure you get as much as you can out of every single dollar you spend. Who knew that I could get double the rewards back if I use the Ibotta app and Checkout 51 to report my shopping receipts? You didn’t know either? That’s what I’m saying about this book!
She took being frugal to a whole new level. I learned so much and even bookmarked her website: Six Dollar Family.
A definite must read for those looking to save money and be even more frugal than you already are.
[usr 5]
4. Resthaven. I have not put up my review of this book on Amazon.com yet for a reason. It’s because the detailed review will come from this site first. I also want to read the other book by Erik Therme before doing an interview with him (yes, that was a teaser). Note that I gave this book a 5/5 stars. Why? I got to the very last sentence of the book, flipped the page and did a “Whaaaaaatttt?”
The next page was the author page. I flipped back to the last page and re-read the last two lines and did a “Whaaaatttt?” Then I did an “OMG. I need the next book!”
Yeah…that’s how good this book was. I definitely recommend this. It’s a thriller and mystery all wrapped up into one. Loved it.
How to Save BIG During Summer’s Movie Blockbusters
Are you a cinephile? Oh, I am. I definitely am. Summers are always the best time to hit the theaters. It gets you out of the sweltering heat and into a nice air-conditioned room for a couple of hours. A lot of times, that’s worth the $16. But to do that more than a few times a month, movies can become pretty expensive.
Well, someone out there created MoviePass. For around $30/month (I pay $34.99/month), you can see 1 movie every 24 hours. For people in NYC, the monthly membership pays for itself in a little over 2 movies a month.
I’ve been using Movie Pass for almost two years now and I love it. Everyone I know that is a member loves it! I’ve never had an issue with it. The way it works is you apply online for the membership, and they send you a MoviePass credit card which you will use to purchase your movies at the theater. This card can only be activated by checking into a 2D movie on the MoviePass app on your phone. You’ll have 30 minutes after checking into the movie to purchase the ticket. The app is what activates the MoviePass credit card for that movie ticket purchase.
The card only works for 2D movies. There are restrictions that you should familiarize yourself with, so read the fine print to learn how to get the most out of MoviePass. Follow the rules and you’ll have no problems enjoying this great membership.
If you go to the movies every week, this would be a perfect money-saving option for you. I try to go to the movies 2-3 times a week.
MoviePass is Only the Beginning of Savings
Make sure you sign up for movie rewards at each of the theaters you go to. Combined with the MoviePass, you’ll rack up rewards much faster.
For instance, I just recently renewed my AMC Stubs card for $12. Most people would kind of flinch and turn down paying $12 for a rewards card. To me, I’ve gotten my money back plus more.
They sent me an email recently saying that if I renewed now, I could get $5 to spend in my account, so I renewed and got $5 to use at concessions. I’ve also received other special offers via email that rewarded $5 to my account (so it pays to actually look at the emails they send).
Another great thing about AMC Stubs is that once or twice a year, they’ll give away free passes to a pre-screening of a movie. I try to go every year they do this. This year, it was Criminal.
Now here’s the trick to the savings with loyalty cards:
In order to get that first $10 rewards from AMC Stubs, you need to spend $100 at AMC. The cheapest way to do that is by using your MoviePass.
Using MoviePass, that’s $15.99/movie applied to the AMC Stubs card. In a little over 6 visits, that equates to a $10 reward added to your AMC Stubs account.
In order to get that $10 reward without MoviePass, you’d end up spending $100 out of pocket to get to that $10 reward. With MoviePass, it’s around $34.99 to get to that $10 reward by seeing 6 movies in one month. That’s a savings of $65. That is the cheapest way to get to those rewards without spending any extra money.
But of course, many people like to stop at concessions to get their popcorn or drink. Just make sure you are earning points with those purchases. Remember, order the size down, because with AMC Stubs, it is an automatic upgrade to the next size.
Regal Crown Club is FREE to sign up. They work on a point system. You get points for movies/concessions which you can later redeem on concessions, free tickets and other exclusive movie items. They reward you for becoming a frequent guest. The more you check in during the year, the more points you’ll be able to earn per movie.
So whatever theater you frequent, make sure you sign up for their loyalty card program. Free movie tickets and concessions are in your future.
The Rewards Don’t Stop There
My friends usually laugh when they see me pulling out all of these reward tickets and cards when we go to the movies. Last week, I not only got a free ticket to see “The Huntsman,” but I also got a free small popcorn. I don’t eat movie popcorn, so I gave the reward to my friend who was able to upgrade the small to a large for only $2. I still got points added to my account for that $2 upgrade.
The thing is…they have no idea that the savings and rewards doesn’t stop there for me. I get more points to use towards other rewards.
Are you a member of Disney Movie Rewards? If you see Disney movies, Star Wars movies, Marvel movies, or even buy them…you are missing out on extra points you could be using towards Disney/Star Wars/Marvel items, gift cards (Starbucks, etc.), trip vouchers (Delta Vacations), or even photo processing gift certificates. It’s completely free to join. You can use your qualified movie tickets and DVD/Blu-Ray purchases to get points to use towards rewards.
I spend the year racking up as many points as I can get. In November, I use the points to purchase gifts for children who would not have a Christmas if it weren’t for the generosity of strangers.
Sony Rewards is another rewards program. You can rack up points in a variety of ways (fast track to getting rewards is to apply for their credit card and earn points that way). The rewards? They have everything from DVDs/Blurays on up to TVs, cameras, film equipment, etc. You can even use the points towards Ultimate Rewards for concert tickets, etc. It’s free to sign up and to make it easier to register your points…there’s an app.
Extras
For those 3D and 4DX movies that cannot be purchased by using the MoviePass, purchase your tickets through Fandango. Make sure you’ve signed up for Fandango Rewards. While some may be lamenting the fees involved with purchasing your tickets through Fandango…hear me out. You’ll find that purchasing 4DX tickets will sell out very quickly. [If you have not tried out 4DX, it is a must. It is worth every single penny. It is an experience in and of itself. It’s like you are in the movie.]
I went to see Captain America: Civil War’s first showing, which in NYC, starts at 7PM the day before the actual release nationwide. That morning, there were only 5 seats available for the 4DX showing. I grabbed my ticket right then and there through Fandango. As far as getting points, because it was a Marvel film, Disney Movie Rewards is connected to the Fandango account, as well as the Regal Crown Card, so I don’t have to do anything extra after the movie to make sure I got my credits through the rewards programs. It was already taken care of.
Now, this is why I mention Fandango Rewards, I’m going to introduce you to an app called Fandango Now. You can rent, buy and stream movies through the Fandango Now app. Points from your Fandango VIP Rewards can be used towards a percentage off on your purchase at Fandango Now. You get points through your purchases at Fandango Now (no points are rewarded through buying tickets at Fandango.com).
Fandango Now is still new to me, so I’ll explain why I am suggesting this app. I use Cinema Now and Fandango Now to buy and rent movies. Fandango Now has offered a lower sale price than Cinema Now on rentals. Last week, the rentals for a variety of titles (many new and not on DVD yet) were $1.99 each. I took an AmEx gift card I had received and bought up a few of the titles and streamed it on my tablet.
The Good Dinosaur was available on Fandango Now, but not on Cinema Now. They had gotten the release before Cinema Now, so I got it through them. That’s where Fandango Now has a little bit of an edge over Cinema Now. You can view many movies before they hit DVD and before other streaming services get the titles.
Now, here’s the downside…The Good Dinosaur was not in Ultraviolet. That means that I can’t put the title in my Ultraviolet library to watch in other Ultraviolet friendly apps such as Cinema Now. That means you can only view the movie on the Fandango Now app.
Keep in mind that Fandango Now is limited in how it can be used. It will work on your mobile devices, tablets and computers. For televisions and streaming equipment, it only works on a few select devices. Make sure to look closely at whether your Smart TV or streaming equipment is supported. If it isn’t, you’ll only be able to watch your movie/TV show on your devices and computer…unless you get the electronics Fandango Now works with (I’m hoping this changes soon and they get more licensing deals with other platforms like Microsoft to use on Xbox One).
If you stream movies all of the time on your computer and devices, then this snafoo does not apply to you. When purchasing titles, if you want to add it to your Ultraviolet library, make sure the title says ULTRAVIOLET on it. If it does not, you will only be able to watch the movie through the app.
For those wanting to save money on a movie night, check between Fandango Now and other streaming movie apps. Check their sales. Movie night at home could only cost $1.99 for a family of four on a release that just left the theaters and hasn’t hit DVD yet. I like that Fandango Now has titles not yet released through other streaming services. For those cinephiles that can’t wait…Fandango Now may be your better option.
SAVE BIG
So what have you learned? MOVIEPASS. This is a membership that pays for itself if you are a cinephile that goes to the movies a lot. If you’re an occasional movie goer, this isn’t for you. If you go to the movies 3 or more times a month (or would like to go that many times), then this is the membership for you.
Use your movie reward cards to earn rewards towards concessions, movie tickets and other memorabilia. For me, I am always earning rewards to use at the concessions every month. Sometimes it is a free dinner!
Sign up for Disney Movie Rewards and Sony Rewards. You may think you’re not watching a Disney movie, but if you love Star Wars and Marvel, then you’re actually at a Disney movie! Earn points to use towards gift cards and merchandise!
For streaming services, try Fandango Now. With the Fandango VIP, you can redeem points to earn a percentage off on rentals/movies. Fandango Now has releases before most streaming services. So if you want to see a title that just left the theater, they are your best bet. Also, make sure to check the sales between all of the streaming apps before purchasing. You may end up finding a better deal!
I hope you found this informative. This is how I watch movies. I try to bleed as many rewards out of that movie ticket as I can. This is how you can watch movies frugally. You can keep that $34.99/month (or less, depending on the region where you live) in your entertainment budget and reap the rewards of the various programs out there that can net you free concessions, free movie tickets for friends/family, and exclusive entries into sweepstakes.
And in the summer heat…this could be your little relief every single day. Happy Movie Watching!
I am absolutely addicted to spiralized noodles! A friend of mine had become obsessed with zucchini noodles and wanted me to try it out, so she ordered a spiralizer for me and she started my latest food addiction.
Who needs all of those carbs from pasta noodles? Not me. Who wants to spend over half an hour just trying to cook a pot of noodles? Not me.
Spiralized noodles are easy to make and very addictive. They’re also so much healthier for you than regular semolina pasta. All you need is a spiralizer, your choice vegetable (zucchini and squash are the most popular), and a sauce of your choice.
I love spaghetti with meat sauce, but I don’t like that gut feeling you get afterward. Substituting the semolina spaghetti with zucchini noodles has become one of my favorite dishes.
The great thing about zucchini noodles is that you don’t have to boil them very long. Just bring a small pot of water to a boil, add the zucchini noodles (sometimes called ‘zoodles’), cook for 2 minutes (keep your eye on the clock), then remove the noodles from the water. Add the sauce of your choice on top and you’ve got an incredibly tasty meal.
Zucchini Noodles in Pesto SauceZucchini Noodles with Meatballs
After going Zoodles, I’m never going back to regular pasta. I ended up donating all of my regular pasta to the food bank.
I have been trying out other versions of spiralized noodles and recipes. I just recently made a Thai peanut sauce version with spiralized Korean squash. I didn’t even need to boil the noodles. I just tossed it into the stir fry and in a minute, it was done.
Trust me…you really won’t miss regular noodles.
The great thing about spiralizing vegetables is that you’re not only sneaking in more vegetables into your diet and cutting out the bad carbs, but you’re also consciously changing the way you’re eating. If you can substitute the bad stuff with the good stuff and the meal tastes amazing, why stick to the bad stuff?
My friend gave me the Pro Cuisine Spiralizer, which comes in a bundle that includes several accessories, as well as a little cookbook with recipes. It’s an inexpensive tool to add to your kitchen arsenal (currently $12.99 at Amazon.com). It’s perfect if it’s just you, or two people. If you have a family, you’re better off going with the bigger spiralizer for a few dollars more. The crank on the bigger spiralizer makes it easier to spiralize more vegetables. The smaller one is better if you’re only spiralizing one or two vegetables at a time.
I love my spiralizer. It’s one of the best gifts I’ve received in a long time,, and one of the best new tools in my kitchen.
We always struggle to stick to a goal we set for ourselves. We say we want to lose weight. We are gung ho about it for a few weeks (if we can make it that far) and then we quit. Maybe we want to save money, but end up going on a spending spree instead and spend all the money we saved. Or maybe we want to take classes, but end up quitting after a few weeks.
We’ve all been there. We try, but often give up before we’ve truly started. We give it our all at the beginning, but then lose steam and all interest shortly thereafter. We don’t like the discomfort, pain and changes that come along with trying to accomplish our goals. It’s so much easier to just give up and go back to our old ways, saying we’ll try again later. It’s easier to say “Yes!” to the doughnut, instead of focusing on our healthy lifestyle.
What if you discovered the secret to accomplishing all of the goals you set for yourself? Would you try again? Maybe set higher and better goals for yourself?
The trick to accomplishing your goals all lie in changing your beliefs by creating new beliefs.
Polly Campbell writes in “Detoxify Your Thoughts,”
Beliefs are simply thoughts or ideas repeated over and over until they become tethered to every aspect of our lives. We take them as truth — even though they are merely illusions. We act from them. And, as a result, they are reflected back into our lives as tangible results. Empowering beliefs can support us en route to our greatest potential. However, often we are saddled with limiting beliefs that narrow our possibilities and keep us from the things we most desire.
She goes on to discuss how we can recognize beliefs that sabotage our goals, and silence them by creating new, positive beliefs to help us accomplish our goals. It is an article worth reading in understanding the process of stopping the sabotage right from the start and trying to overcome it by creating new and positive thoughts that will help you accomplish your goals.
Create Daily Visualization
I create new goals for myself all of the time. The current goals I’m working on in an attempt to make them a lifelong habit is to exercise more, meditate two times a day, complete 100 chores a day, eat healthier, read more and write more. With each goal, I know that I have to make small, but definitive changes each day where I can see I have made actual progress.
Having a monthly/weekly calendar to keep track of the progress of my goals has been the most important tool I have in my arsenal. By visually keeping track of each accomplishment, it gives me more power and incentive to keep going.
I use THIS calendar as my every day calendar. It is unique because at the beginning of the planner, you can list all of your goals, including a time frame you’d like to accomplish each goal. The calendar is designed by Whitney English of Day Designers. It has by far been the best calendar I have used to date. You can download FREE printables from Day Designers to get yourself started. What’s great about Day Designers is that you can customize your own calendar according to your lifestyle or needs. What I also love about Whitney English’s Day Designers is that she teaches you how to best use your calendar by offering you guidance on how to calendar and focus on getting the things done you want to get done. Her calendars are one of the best calendars for perfectionists, Type-A’s, and people who have goals and need a structured way to accomplish their goals. She helps you think outside the box and gives you the tools to focus on how to get through your day and accomplish the goals you have set for yourself.
Day Designers has been working in collaboration with Blue Sky (soon her calendars will be in Target). So if she’s sold out on her site, check Blue Sky for additional products.
Don’t Be Discouraged
One resolution I have this year is to read more than 52 books (12 classics) by December 31, 2016. I started off fantastically. But this past month, I read only two books. Visually seeing that setback could be discouraging. I could do like I did in the past and stop reading for the next few months, telling myself this is something I can’t do. It’s just a crazy feat I will not be able to accomplish. In other words, I could completely sabotage myself.
It’s something we all do because it’s so much simpler to not challenge ourselves to be better. It’s easier to just curl up and flip through Instagram photos, or play Farm Heroes, or read tweets on Twitter. Why read when you can do something else, right? We can always do mindless things that do not challenge ourselves to be better.
It’s easier to indulge in our cravings and reach for that doughnut when you’re on a diet, or buy that new handbag when you’re trying to save for a house, or sleep in when it’s raining outside and you are supposed to go workout. After all, we live in an age of instant gratification. Why work hard to be something we’re not, when it’s so hard or too much work is involved? It’s just easier to give into our cravings then it is to resist them.
That’s because the things that are going to be amazing for us takes a lot of work. We appreciate it more when we have to work hard for it. We will never appreciate the things that come to us easily.
A calendar is a great way to reflect on how you are accomplishing your goals. Even if you only complete two items that month towards that goal, or you suffer a bit of a setback…don’t look at it as a setback. Look at it as part of the challenge. Reflect at the end of the month how you can work with that ‘setback’ to get yourself back on track to accomplishing your goal.
For example, say you saved up $5,000 for a down payment on your dream home, and then your car breaks down. All of that money has to go towards the repairs on the car. You are dismayed because you have to start saving all over again. Don’t give up! Just keep doing what you were doing. You got to $5k and that was an accomplishment. It also means you can do it again. Keep going. Maybe even look for more creative ways to make that money a little faster than you did the first time around. Find fun ways to make that money. Pretty soon you’ll find twice that in your savings account. What you thought was a setback ended up being just a small snafoo.
One thing I always like to remind people is that even millionaires and billionaires can lose their entire fortune. They can end up far more broke than the homeless guy on the street. They pick themselves up and in no time, they have those millions/billions of dollars back in no time. How? Because they had the tools of knowledge on how to make that kind of money. All they had to do is keep doing what they were doing before. Soon they have even more money than they did before. That minor setback was only a learning experience. It wasn’t forever.
That setback taught them how to be better at business so that they could make even more money than they ever did before. They learned from their mistakes and went in a new direction.
The Steps
Accomplishing your goals are simpler than you think it is. You just have to be willing to do the work. It first starts by changing your beliefs.
Get a monthly/weekly calendar. Write down all of your goals for the year. It could be getting out of debt, saving more money, paying off your mortgage or student loans, eating healthier, exercising more, learning a new language…whatever you dream of being, put down all of your goals that will lead you to your ultimate goal of the person you envision yourself as being. For me, each time I finish a book, I put a sticker in my monthly calendar, marking completion of a book. I write down the number of the book, so I know how many books I’ve read so far that year. I then put another sticker in the weekly section and write down the name of the book and the author. Being able to visually see what books I read gives me a clearer reflection of what I read over the past year. It also helps me remember what I read!
Stay positive. In the previous example, even though you suffer a little setback and feel like you have to start all over again, you shouldn’t be discouraged. You were able to save $5k. Give yourself a pat on the back. You were able to create success in attaining your goal. You were also given the tools on how to save up that money. You can use those tools to raise that money again.By remaining positive and staying focused on your goal, you can keep pushing forward. Campbell says “with practice and commitment you can trade out the bad beliefs for better ones.” So instead of thinking you failed, think of how you were lucky that you had that $5k saved up. If you hadn’t had that money saved up when the car broke down, you would have been screwed.Instead of focusing on the negative, focus on the positives of the situation. With that new understanding, you can charge forward with your goal. But while you’re charging forward with your goal, think of how you can improve on this situation. Is there a way you can make the money faster than you did before? Can you start making money off of a hobby you have? Can you make money off of the items you don’t need anymore? Can you work a part-time job? Brainstorm how you can help reach your goal faster after this small setback. You’ll have the $5k plus more in no time.
Just remain positive.
Take pride in every little accomplishment. Losing weight doesn’t happen overnight. Books don’t read themselves. That mile isn’t going to run itself. The purpose of the calendar is so that you can see that you are actually accomplishing your goal one step at a time. Each day, I count how many chores I do. My goal is to do 100 chores a day. I wake up and start doing chores, counting them in my head, no matter how sleepy I am. I write the number down on the chalkboard and move on with my day. When I get home at the end of the day, I finish up my 100 chores and then I sit down and relax. You may think it’s nuts doing 100 chores a day, but it’s actually quite simple. Each dish I wash counts as one chore. Each piece of mail I go through counts as one chore a piece. That makes getting through those 100 chores so much easier. I oftentimes have to make myself stop at 100 so I can have something to do the next day. I do it this way because knowing I accomplished a daily goal makes me happy. It tells me that I can do anything I set my mind to, because I accomplished a goal for the day.
If I didn’t have those 100 chores a day, I would save the chores for the weekend and end up not being able to relax and enjoy my weekends. In a way, I would be sabotaging myself from all of the other things I want to do…like write more.
My daily goal of 100 chores a day spills over into wanting to accomplish other goals. Those 100 chores forces me to get up at 5:30AM to meditate, workout and write. It encourages me to create healthier recipes and to eat healthier. It allows me to create time for doing the things I want to do with my life, because I’ve created a new belief system. I can visually see that I can accomplish a daily goal. That good feeling of knowing I’ve accomplished a goal I’ve set for myself, tells me I can accomplish all of my goals.
If you make it part of your belief system, you’ll find time. One of the biggest excuse people come up with is not having time to do what they want to do. They don’t want to make time to do it. They are not a morning person, so they don’t want to wake up to workout. Eating healthy is too expensive. They don’t have time to read. They’re already strapped for cash, so how can they save money?Simply put, if you make your goal a part of your belief system, you’ll accomplish your goals. I don’t like waking up before the sun rises, but I do. I have a Maine Coon cat that wakes up at 4AM every morning. He tries to wake everyone up at that time and doesn’t stop until he’s fed at 5:30AM. After he’s fed, maybe he’ll let you sleep until 7AM.After two years of this, I find I wake up a few minutes before he does. That’s when I was able to find time to meditate in the morning. At 5:30AM, the cats are fed and I start yoga or tai chi. After yoga, I sit down with a cup of coffee and write or do research. At 7AM, I begin my day. As I go along in my morning routine, I do chores here and there. On the commute in, I read. At the office, when I find I’m going to be at my computer for an extended amount of time, I listen to an audio book, mainly classics (like now, I’m listening to Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”). On the commute home, I read. When I get home, I finish up the 100 chores for the day before sitting down to relax. By the time I’m in bed, I do some more reading, waiting for both cats to fall asleep so that I can do one last meditation before I go to sleep.
I’ve learned that through meditation, I don’t have to sleep as much. Five to six hours of sleep are all I need. I’ve learned to sleep when Matthew Lucifer (the Maine Coon) sleeps. It’s quite similar to new parents learning when to sleep when their children sleep. They learn to get their few minutes of ‘me’ time in here and there.
The thing is no matter what your circumstances are, you can create time to accomplish your goals by making it a part of your belief system. If you want to live a healthy life, you have to constantly make it part of your choice and belief system until it becomes an unconscious belief. In the beginning, you have to keep at it until the change has become a part of your life.
Matthew used to wake me up every hour on the hour when I first adopted him. I had Mom Brain that whole first year…then all of a sudden a miracle happened. In November 2015, he slept through the night, waking up between 4AM-5AM, demanding breakfast at 5:30AM. Now, we’re all on his sleep schedule. Luckily, the times he wakes up are the times I’m supposed to be getting up to meditate, workout and write. He has helped me find a time to do the things I really want to do. Those are the times I used to wake up when I was in high school to finish my homework, because I was too tired at night to think. I’m still that way. I never write at night, because I’m too tired.
It was difficult at first getting used to waking up early again, but bringing meditation into my life helped me see that I don’t need to sleep as much…but I do need a lot of coffee.
The mind is a powerful thing. By meditating twice a day, I am able to focus on the things I want out of life. All of my goals are easier to accomplish, because I am able to get rid of the clutter in my mind and focus on the things that are important to me.If there’s anything I know that is true, always keeping a positive mind will make wonderful things happen for you. It doesn’t just take a positive mindset, it takes a powerful mind. Meditation is the only way to creating a powerful mind. You’ll be able to confront your own demons, the ones that try to sabotage you every step of the way. You’ll be able to vanquish them and decide that you are not going to listen to the naysayers in your head. You’re going to focus on the good stuff. You learn how to speak to yourself in a nice way. You won’t tolerate the bad thoughts. When the bad thoughts happen, you’ll decide that you’re not going to listen to those thoughts anymore. You choose to listen to only the good things. You choose to remain positive.
It takes a lot of practice to focus on choosing the good and positive things in life. That’s why I meditate no less than two times a day. A lot of times, I go for walks and meditate while walking (not all meditations are closed eyes).
We all have things we have to work on inside of us. We can choose to let go of our past and focus on creating a better self for ourselves. Meditation is a powerful thing. It’s you taking back control over your entire life and deciding that from here on out, you’re going to live an amazing life.
You’ll begin to see that you are not a victim of circumstances. You are the creator of your circumstances. We all have choices we make in life. How we view life and the challenges that happen along this journey, is all a choice.
We can choose to look at life negatively, thus creating a negative circumstance, or we can choose to see things in a positive light and see great things happen. We can see the silver lining even in the worst of circumstances.
Achieving your goal is all in a mindset. It’s all about incorporating your goal into your own belief system.
WHAT TO DO
You’ve gotten this far. First, read that article by Campbell. You’ll see how you can stop from sabotaging yourself and strengthen your belief system.
Get yourself an all-in-one monthly/weekly calendar to keep track of your accomplishments. Be colorful about it. I use different color pens and stickers.
Create a daily goal that you know you can accomplish every single day. Mine is 100 chores a day and to read 50 pages a day. This is your daily dose of the “You Can Do It!” feeling that will overflow into your other goals. It will help give you motivation to accomplish your other goals.
See your setback as a challenge to up your game. Don’t be dismayed when you feel like everything you worked so hard for is wiped out from under you. Instead, take a moment to reflect. Keep doing what you were doing, but ask yourself how you can do this better. Is there something you overlooked? Is there a way you could probably improve upon what you’ve already done? Is there a way you can do this differently, but still accomplish your goal?
Take one step at a time. It is tough making changes like waking up early in the morning to go for a run. When you get up in the morning, resolve to thinking the SNOOZE button no longer exists and you have a crazy Maine Coon cat waking you up and attacking you if you even attempt to press snooze (yes, mine does this). You are accomplishing something each time you wake up and resolve to run.
Keep in mind that you are taking this one step at a time. Create better habits with each step. Maybe instead of taking the elevator up those few short flights, you’ll arrive 10 minutes earlier to walk up those flights of stairs. If you sit at your desk during lunch, resolve to walk during lunch to get in your daily 10,000 steps. Make small, but positive changes to accomplish your goals. This is about incorporating this into your belief cycle…the belief that you should be doing this because it is WHO YOU ARE.
Do this again and again and again until it becomes an unconscious decision inside of you. Practice Makes Perfect! If you want to eat healthier, it’s about always wanting to choose the healthier food the majority of the time. If you don’t like healthy food, create healthy food you’ll fall in love with. It’s all about trial by error. Sometimes you’ll find that trying and trying again, even attempting new things to reach your goals will create a new passion in life…being the person you always dreamed of being…YOU in this moment…the person that accomplished their goals and made their dreams come true.
The May Amazon Kindle First selection is Anat Talshir’s “About the Night.” Here is a description of the book.
On a hot summer day in 1947, on a grandstand overlooking Jerusalem, Elias and Lila fall deeply, irrevocably in love.
Tragically, they come from two different worlds. Elias is a Christian Arab living on the eastern side of the newly divided city, and Lila is a Jew living on the western side. A growing conflict between their cultures casts a heavy shadow over the region and their burgeoning relationship. Between them lie not only a wall of stone and barbed wire but also the bitter enmity of two nations at war.
Told in the voice of Elias as he looks back upon the long years of his life, About the Night is a timely story of how hope can nourish us, loss can devastate us, and love can carry us beyond the boundaries that hold human beings apart.

How to Turn Your Negative Thoughts Into Positive Thoughts
Every week, I attend meditation classes. Not just to meditate, but to listen and learn how I can become a better human being.
My focus at this stage in my life is on cleaning out the soul of all of the things it does not need like negative thoughts, pain, hurt, judgment, etc. It takes a lot of practice and concentration to go through each item that is causing my soul torment…the things I need to get rid of before I die.
One of my biggest challenges right now is to stop thinking negative thoughts all of the time. I oftentimes find myself drowning in negative thoughts, especially when I’m walking around outside Manhattan. Between the crazies you meet every single day and the tourists that get in the way and walk super slow (or take over the entire sidewalk and don’t move at all while you’re trying to get to work), you start to immediately think like a New Yorker would and that’s not always a positive thing.
The number of obscenities that run through my mind every single day on the commute to the office…I’d be a rich woman if I put a quarter in a jar for every bad thought I had during the commute to the office.
Then there are those negative things you tell yourself in the morning when you scrutinize how you look or live, or the things you see on social media or television, or the things that happen inside your home before you’ve even left the house. The negative thoughts just keep on flowing from the moment you wake up and continue well into your dreams.
We are conditioned to think negatively all of the time. We’ve let the negative thought processes take over so much that to think positively becomes so alien to us. It becomes a concerted effort to think positive at all times.
A couple of weeks ago, I heard a story of a nun that at a young age was sheltered from the world. She was kept away from people that were negative or gossiped. She was kept away from the world like Siddhartha (Buddha) was kept away from the world. As a result of being kept from the world, she never had a negative thought. She always had positive thoughts, because she was shielded from all of the negative things in the world.
Imagine having an intellect that was powerful enough to extinguish the negative from ever entering your mind. That was what this young girl was practicing from the time she was six years old. She’s an old woman now and still lives in this world separate from all of the negative things that happen. Her only focus is to remain at peace and to be positive. It is her positive mind that inspires and helps everyone she encounters.
I aspire to be like her…to have a mind so powerful that when a negative thought attempts to enter my mind, it will be extinguished by the fire of positivity. I aspire to have a mind that is conditioned to think positive thoughts first and when the negative thoughts attempt to enter, it will be so alien to my mind that it can’t break through that barrier and take over.
For those who read books like“The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne and other books focusing on the benefits of positive thinking, you know what great rewards can come to you when you are positive all of the time. Simply put, the thoughts you put out there are the exact experiences you get back. If you think positive all of the time, only good things will happen to you. If you think negative, only bad things will happen to you. It is the way the universe works and has always worked.
The thought process is basically – YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK. Your entire life and the good things you want out of life can be had…if you put your mind to it.
Changing your mindset from negative to positive is easier said than done. It takes a lot of practice. The first step in changing your mindset is devoting yourself to a practice of daily meditation. The best time to start is when you first wake up in the morning. Take a moment to not press the snooze button and just sit up, focus on your soul, and think positive thoughts. Sit like this for a few minutes, in complete silence, then open your eyes and begin your day.
With each thought you have over the course of the day, focus on the quality of the thought. Is it a negative thought or a positive thought? If it is a negative thought, stop yourself. Don’t let the thought continue. CHOOSE to accept that what you were thinking was negative and you will no longer entertain that thought. Switch your mind to focusing on a positive thought.
Ask yourself this: How can I change how I think and feel about that negative situation I was just thinking about so that I can feel positive about it so I will never think that way again?
You’ll find that the more and more you recognize the negative and decide to stop it in its tracks, you’ll find that you are beginning to reshape your mind, teaching your mind a new truth.
This is something you have to practice over and over and over again until your mind’s natural condition is to think positive thoughts at all times, never letting the negative disrupt your thoughts. Let the good thoughts be the first thoughts you grab from now on like it is sweet nectar from the tree of knowledge.
Beyond having a better, more peaceful mind, you’ll find that when you are a positive person, great and amazing things happen to you all of the time. Whatever you truly want is yours, because the thoughts you create from this positive perspective will help you achieve all of the dreams you have for yourself. Your mind will also reshape itself to only want the good dreams, not the ones that will ultimately hurt you or others. You will, in essence, learn to choose wisely because your choices are coming from a good place.
When negative things happen, you don’t let it bother you or shape you. You’ll know how to deal with the situation more intelligently, because you’ll have a strong, positive mind.
Daily meditation is the key to obtaining this strength. Thinking positive is a strength because of how hard you have to work at making this a part of your life. To think negatively all of the time is a sign of being weak.
For those looking to learn how to meditate, I strongly recommend learning from the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization. They have Meditation Centers all over the world. You can even learn how to meditate on their website. People from all religious backgrounds who want a deeper understanding and connection to their soul and God can find out how to create a better connection by learning meditation through raj yoga (yoga for the mind). I’ve met Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, etc. at the Meditation Center over these last 8 years. Learning raj yoga has helped them have a much deeper, spiritual connection with God and has helped them understand their religion much better than before. It helps them create peace within themselves no matter what is happening in their lives or around them.
Simply put, the Brahma Kumaris help people find peace within themselves so that they can become a better human being for this world.
It is absolutely free to take meditation classes with them.
When I was introduced to them 8 years ago, I was searching for God. I couldn’t find him in man’s religion. When I sat through the free meditation classes, I realized that I was right. God was not in religion. He was always right there with me. I was always searching for something that I already had. I just needed someone to confirm what I already knew was true. The Brahma Kumaris were the first to say, “You were right all along.” They were the answer I was looking for all these years, and I grew up a Christian. I find that every time I attend classes, I always learn something new that helps me with whatever is happening in my life at that moment.
I soak up stories of great people and how through the practice of meditation, they are helping change the world for the better. Meditation is what empowers the minds to become strong and to focus on doing great things for the world to help people in the most amazing ways. You may go into meditation thinking that you are doing something great for yourself, but you’ll soon learn that doing something great for yourself also means sharing that joy you’ve found within yourself with the world. That’s what positive thinking people do…they want to share the benefits of everything good in the universe with everyone around them. Because if everyone thought positive all of the time, this world would be a much better place.
One of my favorite stores in Rockefeller Center is Anthropologie. Their catalog (as well as J Crew) is one of the most anticipated (and the most dangerous) catalogs to reach my household. The whole catalog becomes a major wish list every single season – clothing, accessories and home goods.
My friends and I go through the catalog and start marking down what we want the most. Usually at the top of our list are new duvets, tops and dresses.
With spring in full swing, it’s time to freshen up our wardrobes (plus shop the sales) with a few new picks from Anthropologie. Since this is gown season for me, I love that Anthropologie is now a source to purchase unique gowns for weddings, parties, theater, red carpet, etc.
Here are a few of my favorite picks from Anthropologie.
There are so many items I love. It’s so hard to just pick a few pieces. Every time I go into their store, I want to just wrap everything up and take it home with me.
As the Opera season ends the Ballet season begins in New York City when the American Ballet returns to the Met Opera house. I have my tickets for both the Gala and the upcoming performance of Stravinsky’s “Firebird.”
In other words, gown season has officially begun for me.
While I was pondering what to wear to the Gala, I realized this was a perfect time to finally pull out the tulle skirts in waiting, because what goes better with ballet than tulle?
For those who are looking for tulle skirts, I highly recommend Shabby Apple. They come in a variety of sizes, colors and lengths [they do cater to plus sizes, they only list current inventory, so check back often or contact them to ask if they can let you know the moment a skirt you like becomes available in your size, they have excellent customer service].
I picked up the mint maxi tulle skirt. It’s basically a wrap skirt with tulle for miles. It’s my happy skirt. Granted, it takes up half the space in the gown closet, but it’s my happy skirt.
Shabby Apple Wooster Tulle Skirt in Mint
I’m really excited that I’ll be able to finally wear a couple of my tulle skirts next month as the ballet season opens, especially the Shabby Apple Wooster skirt.
One question I do get asked a lot on Pinterest is where someone can find a tulle maxi skirt in black. I made sure to include a few in the gallery. If you’re looking for something specific, let me know. I am always shopping for gowns, so I may know where you can find what you’re looking for.

Criminal. Due out in theaters April 15, 2016.
Kevin Costner takes on a very different role in his new film “Criminal.” Also stars Ryan Reynolds (CIA Agent Bill Pope), Gary Oldman (Quaker Wells, CIA), Tommy Lee Jones (Dr. Franks), Alice Eve (Marta Lynch, CIA), Gal Gadot (Jill Pope, wife of Reynolds’ character Bill Pope).
LONDON – CIA Agent Bill Pope (Reynolds) is on the run. After picking up a bag filled with $10 million and a US passport, he leaves the pickup point only to discover he’s being followed. He stashes the bag and tries to get away in a black cab. He sends a message to his team at the CIA office that he’s surrounded and then sets the GPS coordinates for the driver to take him to a safe place where he’ll meet up with CIA/military enforcement.
Even though he thinks he’s on his way to safety, it doesn’t help that the group that’s following him is an anarchist group and they are excellent hackers. Hagbardaka Heimbahl (played by Jordi Mollà), the leader of this terrorist group, changes the GPS coordinates so that he’ll arrive at an abandoned slaughterhouse. By the time he realizes what’s happened, it’s too late for Agent Pope. He’s captured and tortured to death.
Agent Pope is holding important information everyone wants. They want to know the whereabouts of The Dutchman (played by Michael Pitt).
The reason why The Dutchman is so important is because he’s created a wormhole into the US military weaponry system. He controls all of America’s nuclear warheads. This weapon was designed for Heimbahl’s anarchist group, but feeling like he had made a mistake, he offered to sell the wormhole back to the US government for $10 million and a US passport. For The Dutchman, this isn’t about money. $10 million is the price of his freedom, because he will always be on the run from this anarchist’s group.
Agent Pope was the only person who knew where The Dutchman was located, because he hid him himself. With his death, the information died with him…or did it?
Dr. Franks (Jones) has developed a technology where information can be transferred from one brain to another. Pope is clinically dead, but they are able to keep him alive long enough to complete this brain transfer. There’s only one man that can be a prime candidate for the transfer…a felon named Jericho (Costner) that’s currently in prison.
What makes Jericho so unique is that the front part of his brain is essentially turned off. He was hit in the head when he was a young boy. Because of that hit, his brain failed to develop correctly. He has no understanding of right from wrong. He has no sympathy or emotions. He just does as he pleases. As the warden said, how can you punish someone when he does wrong when he has no concept or understanding that what he is doing is wrong. You can’t teach him that it is wrong. He does not understand.
(c) 2015 Michelle Kenneth
This is what makes him a great candidate for the mind transfer. They need his frontal lobe to transfer Agent Pope’s mind.
With the successful completion of the surgery, Agent Quaker (Oldman) immediately demands answers from Jericho…where is The Dutchman? Jericho acts like the surgery was not successful, so he is sent back to prison.
On the way back, he manages to escape (very violently) and finds that he’s no longer in the United States, but in London. With no money to his name, or any means to survival, he does what he does best. He takes what he wants, when he wants. If someone threatens him, he lives by the motto, “You hurt me, I hurt you worse.”
As he continues his crime spree across London, Agent Pope’s mind starts to awaken in his mind. The memories of Pope’s wife and daughter are so prevalent, he heads to their home. He knows where all the cameras are, what the access codes and PIN numbers are. He breaks into the house, duct tapes Jill Pope (Gadot) to the bed in an attempt to rape her and then rob the house. But Agent Pope starts to really work on him…because he starts to hold back when he realizes what he’s doing is wrong. He could hurt them and that would not be a good thing.
He takes off with some valuables to pawn so he can have money to buy food. One item he picked up in his heist was a silver hairbrush. He started to remember how Jill would brush Emma’s hair (the daughter). The memory made him take back the brush, because it had sentimental meaning to Pope (and to him somehow).
He starts ordering food from the same places Pope went to. He’d place his order in French, when he knows he doesn’t know any other language but English. With Pope’s memories becoming more and more prevalent, he sees where a bag with money is stashed, but doesn’t know exactly where the place is. Seeing that it had something to do with a library, he heads to the nearest library to search.
While at the library, he puts his newfound knowledge to work on the computer. He hacks into the CIA’s system and locks them out of it, searching for information on Dr. Franks. He’s the only one that can help him with his splitting headache and this new mind inside of his head.
Dr. Franks is willing to help him with the pain, but warns him that he only has 48 hours before the memories start to fade. He needs medical attention. Jericho doesn’t want to go back into any form of custody, so he tries to leave…only to be caught again by the CIA.
The CIA is racing against the clock to find The Dutchman. The fact that Jericho hasn’t been able to access the memory yet causes big problems. The Dutchman, upon finding out that Agent Pope has died, is desperate to find some sort of sanctuary away from the anarchist group. He turns to the Russians to sell the wormhole to them.
Kevin Costner. October 21, 2015. (c) 2015 Michelle Kenneth
Along the way, Heimbahl discovers that Jericho has Pope’s memories. So now, not only does Jericho have the CIA chasing him down, but the anarchist group, too.
As Pope’s memories start to take over, Jericho begins to change from the sociopath criminal to a normal human being that cares, but will hurt you worse if you try to hurt him. He means business.
This movie is one of the best action films I’ve seen in a long time. Costner’s character is true evil, but you start to love this bad guy who turns into a hero. This is a very different role for Costner, one that he performed in very well. He definitely brought his A++ game to this role.
The accompanying cast was exquisitely picked. When Tommy Lee Jones makes his first appearance, my immediate thought was “The Fugitive” where he’s chasing down the criminal, but that role belonged to Gary Oldman. Jones’s character was more subdued. He was the good guy that cared, instead of the law enforcement officer that didn’t give a damn.
This was a very well written script that does not disappoint.
This is a must see. The movie is due out in theaters on April 15, 2016.

This book is a war fiction novel that takes place during World War II. Here’s the Amazon blurb:
In 1958, a diary is found in a cave on the small Japanese island of Hatoma. Alongside it are the remains of three people.
The journal reveals the story of Hiromi, a sixteen-year-old girl who’d grown up in the United States before living in Japan in the midst of World War II. One day, while collecting star sand—tiny star-shaped fossils—Hiromi finds two army deserters hiding in the seaside cavern—one American, one Japanese. The soldiers don’t speak the same language, but they’ve reached an agreement based on a shared hope: to cause no more harm and survive. Hiromi resolves to care for the men—feeding them and nursing their ailments—despite the risk that, if caught, she’ll die alongside them as a traitor. But when a fourth person joins in on their secret, they must face a threat from within. The diary abruptly ends, leaving everyone’s fate a mystery.
Decades later, in 2011, a young female university student decides to finally determine who died in that cave and who lived. Her search will lead her to the lone survivor—and bring closure to a gripping tale of heroism at a time when committing to peace was the most dangerous act of all.

“The Light of the Fireflies” by Paul Pen Discussion Thread.
Hello everyone.
My name is Michelle Kenneth and I’ll be moderating our first book club discussion for Paul Pen’s “The Light of the Fireflies.” This is an Amazon Kindle First book, so if you subscribe to Amazon Prime, you get early access to the book before it is released for FREE. On the first day of every month, they release a group of selections that you can choose from.
For March, I selected Paul Pen’s book. I’ll be selecting the next book tomorrow after they release their selections. [In the future, as we get more interest in the Book Club, I’ll let someone else pick out the next month’s selection.]
So on to the discussion…
1) What did you think of the book?
2) Were you shocked by the ending of the book?
3) When they revealed who the father of the child was, were you surprised at this revelation? Did you assume the baby’s father was who the sister claimed the baby’s Father was?
4) What did you think of the real story of how they ended up in the basement and how they attained their burns?
5) As the boy tells the story from his point of view, he knows his brother is just a little off, but never to the extent we see in the back story. Based on what is revealed in the back story, did you imagine that the brother could be dangerous to society?
6) Overall, what were your thoughts on the book? Would you recommend it to your friends/family?
Diary of a Perfectionist Wannabe: I’ll start the discussion off…
1) Simply put, I did not like the book at all. Generally speaking, the incest involved and the elements of what the brother did to that girl…just not something I would normally read.
2) I was shocked by the ending of the book. I think as a woman, I’m generally concerned for the safety and well being of other women. I assumed the sister was the victim in this, sexually abused by her father. I never imagined she was actually a very bad seed. She was just altogether evil. Did she deserve getting knocked up by her brother? Was that some sort of justice? I don’t think it was. At the end, when she is killed, I thought it was a saving grace for everyone. They were safe from her torment, and she finally escaped her family.
3) I assumed the entire time the father was the father of her child. I never even imagined it was the brother that had knocked her up.
4) I really didn’t like their back story. This family was absolutely crazy. If they had called the police to begin with, they never would have gone into that basement. They never would have received those burns. I’m sure the town would have taken into account that the child had a mental disability. He didn’t report that he had found the girl because he did not know he was supposed to do that. Sure, there may have been villagers talking about how the kid sexually assaulted the girl while she was broken, but they could always move and start over. Why hide the corpse? The boy just didn’t know better. The Sister, she was evil within herself. She would have been better off leaving her family, especially after the way they ‘saved’ the boy the way they did.
The next question is…would you have followed in their footsteps or would you have called the police to save your disabled son?
5) I was very shocked when I read what the Brother did to the girl. It was just difficult to fathom he was a sexual deviant. Then to find out he had sex with his sister…I have to ask how that happened. She seems to fight well for herself. Was she raped? Did he have sex with her while she was asleep? How did he do it? It’s obvious she hates her brother and always has. How was he able to take advantage of her?
If you were in the Sister’s shoes, would you have tried to kill the baby, too? Personally, I don’t even want to think about being in her shoes.
I also could not imagine that the Brother was a danger to society. Part of me thinks that the family just made one too many wrong decisions in an attempt to ‘save’ their favorite son, thus making the situation out worse than it really was. It’s not like the boy killed the girl (or did he)?
6) Overall, I didn’t like the book. I assumed that the reason why they were all in there was because of some nuclear attack or apocalyptic happening…or maybe they wanted to be rid of society that judged them for their appearance after a fire. To find out why they went down into that basement…come on. They were a family of cowards.
Would I recommend this book to anyone? No. Just because it’s not my type of book. A lot of people on GoodReads recommend the book, even though it is very dark.
This book is so haunting it will stick with you for life just because of the disturbing images throughout the book. All throughout the book, I kept wondering how in the world the author came up with this idea.
As we go along and make this a regular book club, we’ll change how the book club is done, so make sure to sign up with your email to join the PW Book Club on the right hand side. Also, as more people join, I’ll let others pick out the next month’s Amazon Kindle First book on the first of the month.
I’ll be announcing next month’s Kindle First book tomorrow.
For those who don’t know what Kindle First is, you can read more about it HERE.
For those who pulled everything out of their wardrobe and pared everything down, you may be in that state of not wanting to purchase anything new because you like how you have less clutter in your closet.
Then there are people like me who went through the first KonMari round with their wardrobe and still continue to KonMari the hell out of their closet to no avail. I have a lot of things I do in life: work, play, relax, attend events, opera, theater, rock concerts, red carpet events, and so on. Simply put, I have the socialite wardrobe…a versatile wardrobe that goes along with whatever event may come my way. My wardrobe is prepared for anything. That means I have a closet full of gowns for the red carpet, opera and weddings. I have coats for the snow days, rainy days, extremely cold days and the special event coats. I also have the closet for work and everyday wear.
In other words, I have the wardrobe I need to maintain the life I have. Although, that also means I need a bigger closet!
After the first round of going through my closet, I was able to get rid of 5 large bags of clothing. Now, when I wear something or go through my closet, I look for even more stuff that I can get rid of that does not bring me joy. I am constantly trying to fine tune my wardrobe to get rid of the things I don’t need anymore.
But there are times when you feel like you may need something a little different, but loathe the thought of adding yet another piece of clothing to your wardrobe or spending a lot of money on it. You’re afraid of going back to your old ways where you had more clothes than you had space.
Maybe you have a big event coming up and need a new dress. Or maybe you have a hot date coming up and want something nice to wear for the evening. Or maybe you’re a fashion blogger and need new pieces coming in on a steady basis for your blog, but don’t want the clutter or to break the bank every month. Or maybe you just want to try out a new trend without truly investing in it completely.
Whatever your fashion need, there’s a way now that you can rent your clothes without a) breaking the bank and b) without adding to the clutter.
Le Toteoffers wardrobe rentals for $59/month (Maternity boxes are $69/month). You pick the items you like, a box is curated based on the items you place in your virtual closet (in your size). What you get in each box: 2 shirts, pant/skirt/dress, and 2 accessories (i.e. 5 items). Wear it as many times as you like. Return the items for something new. If you decide to keep the item(s) (or the box), you will be billed accordingly.
You can get $25 off your first box by using this LINK.
Rent the Runway has been known for years to rent designer gowns for special events. They have now gone UNLIMITED. What does that mean? Like Le Tote, you can rent up to 3 designer items at any time. Unlimited is slightly more expensive at $139/month (plus $29.95/year for unlimited shipping) because of the designers they use. For instance, for my first shipment, I requested a $1,690 Reed Krakoff handbag. I can keep the handbag for as long as I like and return it whenever I like.
You get a new item whenever you return an item.
Rent the Runway Unlimited is designed for fashionistas such as myself. There are designer gowns, handbags, coats, jewelry, eyewear, dresses, workwear, etc. It is ideal for me, because it saves me from running out to purchase new formal wear every single time I have an event. I can just put in a request to receive a gown (or 2 or 3) along with the handbag/accessories to match. Plus, I’m not stuck with the gown afterward. (It’s very rare I get more than one wear out of a gown.)
If you are a handbag fanatic like me, you can use the service to rent handbags all of the time. I think this option is great, because other services where you can rent handbags, the price is contingent upon the handbag you are ‘borrowing.’ For instance, at Bag Borrow or Steal, a Chanel handbag could cost you $350/month to rent. It will cost you $350/month every month until you return the bag.
While Rent the Runway Unlimited doesn’t currently carry Chanel, allowing a $1,690 handbag to be part of the rental for $139/month and you can keep the bag as long as you want, return it when you are done (plus, you get to have 2 additional items out at the same time)? That seems to be the steal.
Sizes go up to size 22 at Rent the Runway Unlimited, but keep in mind, the options grow smaller for clothing when the sizing goes up (hopefully, since this is a new service that will change soon). A huge plus is that they do carry Eloquii!
You can get $20 off your first order by clicking on this LINK.
As for me, I subscribed to both rental services. I am using Le Tote for workwear, so that I can have a few extra options to play with by mixing it in with my current wardrobe. I am using Rent the Runway Unlimited for handbags, gowns, and dresses…mainly handbags. I love handbags. Gown season will be starting soon for me, so it’s nice to know I can order 3 items at a time for $139/month. If you’re constantly returning items at RTR Unlimited, you could get up to 6-9 designer items a month out of that $139/month. That is a serious savings.
The positives to this type of service is that it creates less clutter in your home. You have a steady stream of fashion coming to your door. You’re also not paying an arm and a leg for new clothes, especially major designer clothing. For me, I could spend anywhere between $300-$1500/month on clothing and accessories. That, of course, is the old me. That kind of lifestyle was not only expensive, but it caused a major clutter issue at home.
Spending close to $200/month on rentable fashion without adding to the clutter? To me, that is a major deal and stays in line with the clutter free life at home. I can still have new fashion pieces coming in all of the time for all aspects of my life, and I don’t have to keep the items around. After all, I’m sure there are plenty of ladies out there like me that would buy something, wear it once, decide you don’t like it and it ends up getting donated. Or maybe you get 3 wears out of it and then you decide you don’t like it anymore. Well, instead of throwing it out…just return it to get something different.
The Way To Truly Take Advantage of Your Wardrobe
One thing you need to keep in mind is that these rental services should only be used to COMPLEMENT your wardrobe. Buy the basics that you need. Rent the stuff you don’t need. Use the rental for special events or because you want to try out a new look. Use it because you want to constantly have something different to wear beyond your go to basics.
The stuff you keep in your wardrobe are the items that bring you joy every single time you wear it. These are the items that fit you perfectly and make you feel good about yourself every single time you wear it (oftentimes, you wear these pieces a lot). The purpose of renting is to not add to your ‘things’ you have to take care of. It’s to prevent yourself from continuing to add clutter to your wardrobe because you like a new trend. Renting curbs your need to consume by adding more to your possessions. Instead, you can indulge in your fashion passion without having to add to your clutter.
What I really love about Rent the Runway Unlimited is that I can indulge in my designer loves, especially handbags. I could have a different bag every week without having to spend thousands of dollars on each handbag. That, to me, was the major selling point, especially when I saw which bags I could try out.
Of course, if you like the item and want to keep it, you can buy it. Because they are rentals, you can purchase the item at a discounted price. That, in itself, is worth using the service. You get to try it out for months (if you want) before truly committing to buying it.
The first official PW Book Club Kindle First selection is “The Light of the Fireflies” by Paul Pen.
Here’s a synopsis of the book from Amazon.com:
A haunting and hopeful tale of discovering light in even the darkest of places.
For his whole life, the boy has lived underground, in a basement with his parents, grandmother, sister, and brother. Before he was born, his family was disfigured by a fire. His sister wears a white mask to cover her burns.
He spends his hours with his cactus, reading his book on insects, or touching the one ray of sunlight that filters in through a crack in the ceiling. Ever since his sister had a baby, everyone’s been acting very strangely. The boy begins to wonder why they never say who the father is, about what happened before his own birth, about why they’re shut away.
A few days ago, some fireflies arrived in the basement. His grandma said, There’s no creature more amazing than one that can make its own light. That light makes the boy want to escape, to know the outside world. Problem is, all the doors are locked. And he doesn’t know how to get out…
For those who are Amazon Prime members, Kindle First books are part of your membership. You don’t have to pay anything extra. It’s FREE.
What is Kindle First? Amazon Prime members can choose one of six books selected by Amazon editors before they are released to the general public. Even if you don’t finish the book by the end of the month, it’s still yours to keep at no charge (i.e. it’s FREE).
If you are not an Amazon Prime member yet and would like to join in this month with the Book Club selection, you can try the service out for free for the next 30-days. If you take advantage of all Prime has to offer (books, music, movies, photo storage, free 2-day shipping) and want to continue after the 30-days, you are charged for the year up front (about $110 depending on your state’s tax). For those who want to cut back on streaming services, Amazon Prime is like Netflix, Dropbox, and iTunes/Google Play Music all wrapped up into one membership. It figures out to be about $8/month, which is a pretty substantial savings.
For those who want to join the Book Club, we are going to do a LIVE chat at 4PM ET on March 30th.
How can you join the live chat? Sign up using the email link under PW Book Club on the right hand side. I’ll email the details and reminder as we get closer to the date. In the meantime, if you have any questions or comments you want to make while you’re reading, feel free to comment below.
Looking forward to chatting with everyone. Happy reading!
One of the resolutions I make every year is to read 52 books a year. At the end of last year, as I started following more and more bibliophiles on Instagram, I was shocked to see that some people read over 100 books by the end of the year. I could never imagine doing that feat. 52 books seemed doable, even though that resolution went to the wayside over these last couple of years.
This year, I wanted to make sure I didn’t just read 52 books, but that I read MORE THAN 52 books this year.
My method of attack is this:
Read 50+ pages every day. On the weekends, read 100+ pages.
While you’re at work, walking, doing dishes, getting ready for work, listen to audio books.
Once a month, do a quick read that’s less than 150 pages.
Finish books you started in the past, but never finished.
After seeing all of the different Instagram challenges, I thought I’d do my own to get people to challenge themselves to read more this year.
Here is how the challenge works:
Choose a Reward for Yourself. Pick out an item that you really want, that you could save for along this journey. Be it a vacation, a luxury handbag, a pair of obscenely overpriced shoes, a class you’ve always wanted to take…pick something that would be considered a serious treat for yourself. You should reward yourself for a job well done. Make sure this is something you’re going to enjoy!
Come up with a pricing system. This will depend on the price of the item you are saving for and what you can afford. For instance, I reward myself if I don’t purchase the book. If it was free, a library book, or a gift, I put away $25 after I’ve completed the book. If it’s a classic (a more challenging smart book), I reward myself $100. If it’s a book for Book Club that I purchased, I allow myself $20. If I purchased the book in order to read it, because I just had to have it, only the retail price listed on the book goes into the reward jar, and the amount I actually paid for the book comes out of the reward jar. Taking the money out of the reward jar to pay for the book is my way of making sure I don’t spend money on unnecessary purchases. The only exception to purchasing the book is if it is for the Book Club. If the book is currently in my personal library, because I am making it a challenge to read what’s actually in my personal library this year, I’m rewarding myself $50 per book completed. That’s the reward system I’ve set up for myself. As you can see, the books I really want to challenge myself to read more of, I set the prize at a higher price in order to encourage myself to read more of those books.
Keep track of what you read. I used to keep track in a journal of what I read every year, including the amount I earned. Now, I keep track in my calendar. I keep stickers handy so I can place a sticker on the days where I completed a book. It’s a good way to visually see my progress and if I’m staying on track with a book a week (at the minimum).
Don’t dip into the reward jar until the first day of the year. I’m speaking from experience here. You are doing two things for yourself…you are working hard towards a goal and you need to learn to save for the reward at the end of the journey. It is no fun if you get to the end of the journey and realize there’s no reward money there because you spent it already. For many people (including myself), saving money can be very difficult when we live in a society where we get what we want, when we want it. We don’t save for the future or save for something we want. Since I started the KonMari method, I have stopped the consumer cycle. I was literally overflowing with stuff. I vowed that if I wanted something new, I would have to save for it using the reading challenge. I’m not allowed to buy the item now. I have to work towards earning the right to have that item, so that I would appreciate it more in the end because I would know how hard I worked to earn that item.Keep the money in a safe place. Keep it safe from yourself (if you think you’re going to dip into the jar). Earn some interest off the money while you save. Just keep plugging at that savings and don’t touch it until January 1st.
But It’s March
Ok. I know I started this challenge for you to join in March. If you’re a bibliophile, you’ve probably already read at least 10 books this year already, so you are on track. If you are starting from scratch, we can go at this in 2 different ways. You can either: 1) fast track (and over the months I’ll tell you how) or 2) do this as a full 52-week challenge, let the challenge run through 2017 and you can access that cash on March 1, 2017.
Whichever method you decide to do, I’ll be helping you along.
For those who are Amazon Prime members, I’ll be making recommendations from the Kindle First collection. If you choose the same book that month, I’ll have a Book Club sign up where we can discuss the book at the end of the month. [Amazon Prime members can choose one book each month from the Kindle First collection. These are books selected by the Amazon editors to read prior to the book’s release date. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, this is part of your membership, no extra charge.]
For those who need to get their extra books in via audio books, I highly recommend Kindle Unlimited. It’s around $10/month to access many books on your Kindle device or app. Just make sure when you select the book to borrow that it says Read and Listen For Free on the tab. If it doesn’t, you may have to pay extra for the Whispersync/Audible audio recordings. What about Audible membership? Audible is $14.95/month and that’s just for one audio book a month. Kindle Unlimited with Whispersync/Audible allows you to read the book and if you need to put the book down, you can switch it to audio and listen until you can read the book again. Audible doesn’t allow that. It’s just the audio book.
The only reason you should have Audible is if you want a book that is not audio available on Kindle Unlimited. I used Audible for Book Club selections when I was having problems getting back into the swing of reading books again after my surgery. 2016 is actually the first time I’ve actively been reading a lot of books since my surgery in 2013. I didn’t want to give up Book Club, so I listened to the books until I got comfortable with reading books again. So if you’re concerned about not being able to read as much, seriously consider audio books. You can listen to them wherever you go when you can’t pick up the physical book.
The March Challenge
So here’s the March challenge. We essentially have five weeks this month. Your focus is going to read/listen to no less than five books. Here are the five books I’ll be reading.
A book about the Circus – Water for Elephants: A Novel (this book is available with audio for Kindle Unlimited members, remember to look for the ‘Read and Listen for Free’ option)
For those not in a book club, I highly recommend joining a book club. You can find these at your local library or bookstore. It’s a great way for you to meet other bibliophiles such as yourself. It gives great insight into the book that you may not have even realized while you were reading. It’s also a good way to meet new people and make new friends. Books are meant to be shared.
If you don’t want to join a book club, since our book club is reading a classic, you can substitute option #2 with a classic or read what we’re reading.
For the Amazon Prime members that choose the same Kindle First book as I do and want to join in our own book club, please comment below, tweet me (@MichelleDoPW or @MichelleKenneth), ping me on Facebook, or tag me on Instagram (@diaryofaperfectionistwannabe). I’ll share the additional details in an upcoming post.
For those taking the March Challenge, ping me on social media using the hashtag #PWMarchBooks so that we can all find each other and share what we’re reading this month. I’ll Repost/Retweet, etc. so we can all connect to each other.
* For those playing catch-up, include a short book of poetry and choose at least 2 books this month that are less than 150 pages. If you can, try to boost your reading by listening to a couple of audio books. You can listen to these in the car, at work, while you’re working out, walking, etc.
