Serial Killer Games: A Dark Romantic Comedy

Serial Killer Games is not your Butcher & Blackbird. Everything is just a game until things become too real.

What begins as a playful game between two random coworkers, both predators seeking out their next victim, in a time where there’s a serial killer on the loose pushing people off the top of corporate buildings, all bets are off when we take a closer look into the people playing these games.

Synopsis

What would you do if you thought your coworker was getting away with murder—literally?

Dolores dela Cruz has been dying to spot one in the wild, and he fits the mold perfectly: strangler gloves, calculated charm, dashing good looks that give a leg up in any field . . . including fields of unmarked graves.

The new office temp is definitely a serial killer.

Jake Ripper finds a welcome distraction in his combative and enigmatic new coworker. He hasn’t come across anyone as interesting as Dolores in a long time. But when mere curiosity evolves into a darkly romantic flirtation, Jake can’t help but wonder if, finally, he’s found someone who really sees him, skeletons in the closet and all.

Until Dolores asks Jake’s help to dispose of a body . . .

A morbidly funny and emotionally resonant novel about the ways life—and love—can sneak up on us (no matter how much pepper spray we carry).

Thoughts

Morbidly funny best describes this book. I don’t usually laugh when I read books, but this one was so funny, I was laughing throughout. Dolores and Jack are so perfectly matched, and they know they are. Black Widow meets Ted Bundy.

Their first date mimics a serial killer that delivers body parts across town. The way they play off of each other’s serial killer reenactments would make you think this is just like Butcher & Blackbird. It starts off that way, and then Las Vegas happens, and the story takes a much deeper turn.

This book is about finding family. Sometimes your family isn’t always blood. Some are built from the people you meet and the connections you make. This is probably the unknown driving force between Dolores and Jack. Maybe this is fate that brings them together? With their weird morbid thoughts that attract them to serial killers and true crime, who knew they could build a family off of that?

There were a lot of layers to this book. There was the serial killer love, the need for family, and the dark pain that people carry with them. There’s the struggle to raise a Cat. [I know I have a child of my own named Matthew.] Then there’s dealing with loss and just learning how to adult and take care of the people in your life.

Matthew

Don’t go into this book thinking this is just about serial killers. It isn’t really about serial killers. It’s about two people who meet through their strange love for serial killers, and their chance meeting turns into something so much bigger.

This book is for romance lovers who don’t mind a little side of serial killer quirkiness. Prepare to laugh out loud (boy, I sure did). Oh, and that first date is a doozy. Jack’s roommate enlisting him to get rid of the body is something next level. Oh, and Jack has disposed of way too many bodies for his roommate.

This book is highly enjoyable and very deep. You’ll love these characters and the family they build together.
